Discovery Multi-Academy Trust was formed in 2016 and is the result of the amalgamation of three primary schools from across the Plymouth area; including Oakwood Primary Academy, Beechwood Primary Academy and Weston Mill Community Primary Academy. We are also fortunate enough to be able to provide an alternative nurture provision, for primary aged children from schools across the city – The Edison Centre.

A trustee at DMAT plays a crucial role in the strategic oversight of the trust. Their responsibilities include ensuring that the trust's vision, mission, and values are upheld, and that its schools are delivering high-quality education. 

What will you be doing?

  • Trustees help set the long-term vision and strategic direction of the trust. They collaborate with the executive leadership team to develop and implement strategic plans that ensure the trust's goals and objectives are met. 
  • Trustees are responsible for holding the executive leadership team accountable for the educational and financial performance of the trust. They monitor progress against strategic objectives, performance indicators, and financial targets to ensure the trust's schools are performing well. 
  • Trustees oversee the trust’s financial health, ensuring resources are managed effectively, budgets are adhered to, and financial risks are mitigated. They scrutinize financial reports, approve budgets, and ensure that funds are used appropriately to support educational outcomes. 
  • Trustees ensure that the trust complies with legal, regulatory, and statutory requirements. They identify and manage risks, ensuring that robust systems are in place for safeguarding, health and safety, and data protection. 
  • Trustees work to ensure that high educational standards are maintained across all schools within the trust. They review academic performance data, support school improvement initiatives, and ensure that the curriculum meets the needs of all pupils. 
  • Trustees engage with a range of stakeholders, including parents, pupils, staff, and the local community, to understand their needs and perspectives. They ensure that stakeholder views are considered in decision-making processes. 
  • Trustees act with integrity and in the best interests of the trust and its pupils. They promote a culture of transparency, inclusivity, and ethical behaviour across the organisation. 
  • Trustees provide both support and challenge to the executive leadership team, offering guidance and expertise while also asking critical questions to ensure robust decision-making. 
  • Trustees commit to ongoing training and development to enhance their skills and knowledge, staying informed about educational best practices, governance, and relevant legislation.
