Job description

What will you be doing?

We are Affordable Accommodation for Students Association Limited (AA4S), a charitable registered society providing accommodation and associated services for just under 400 students in London. We currently operate two halls of residence in East London and are proud to offer some of the most affordable rooms in the market. Our students frequently tell us that without our accommodation, they simply would not be able to afford to come to London to study, or continue their studies.

We are seeking a Trustee who shares our passion for supporting students and their education to join our Board and at least one of our four Subcommittees, which focus on finance, compliance, HR and development. Each Subcommittee has its own priorities, but they play a key role in ensuring that we are able to achieve our mission, support students, remain compliant, and have a long-term strategic outlook.

We expect that as a Trustee you will:

·         Prepare for and attend Board meetings.

·         Develop knowledge of our organisation and the sector we operate in.

·         Uphold our values and share our commitment to providing affordable accommodation for students.

·         Ensure that AA4S achieves its mission and acts within its Rules.

·         Fulfill your legal responsibilities as a Trustee, but also think creatively, share your ideas, and provide us with support and constructive challenge as appropriate.

The role is un-remunerated, but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.

What are we looking for?

AA4S is currently looking to fill one vacancy on the Board.

We assess the skills and diversity of our Trustees annually and are currently interested in applicants with experience or expertise in:

Legal

AA4S is committed to encouraging diversity in our team and to eliminating discrimination. Our aim is that our Board will be representative of all sections of society and that each member will feel respected and able to give of their best. If you feel you have the right experience, please apply. We particularly encourage applications from:

·         Women.

·         Younger applicants.

·         People from ethnic minority backgrounds.

Previous experience as a Trustee may be advantageous but is not a requirement.

What difference will you make?

Our trustees support the Association in its mission to relieve financial hardship, advance education, and to help make the current and future lives of students better. The successful trustee will contribute to providing and developing affordable, good quality, secure accommodation and associated services for undergraduate and postgraduate students studying in London during term-time and for interns, graduates, and visitors during the Summer Vacation period. In doing so their impact will be to support students in their well-being, living experience, in their personal development and in their acquisition of life skills.

Before you apply

Please use the application statement as an opportunity to explain to us your skills, experience, motivation for applying, and why you are suitable for the role, as you would in a cover letter.

We will be shortlisting candidates based on this statement and your career history / experience.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview in November.

We have an induction package for successful candidates, and there will be an opportunity for you to visit our sites to see how we work.

We are hoping that on-boarding will take place soon after interviews, provided this timeline suits the desired candidate.
