Job description

The role of Treasurer is a critical and highly impactful role at our small charity - not only do we need someone to keep us on track financially and ensure our viable, but even more significantly, we are looking for someone to help us to achieve of new Strategic Plan.  

Our Board has agreed ambitious goals for the coming 3 years to diversify our service offer and help more people who need us most.  This means that we need to raise more income and improve our core delivery capacity.  Our new Treasurer will play a decisive role in enabling the Chief Executive, Finance Manager and core team with the Board to make this vision a reality. 

The Stuart Low Trust (SLT) is a well-respected and award-winning charity based in Islington, bringing people together who are socially isolated to improve mental health and wellbeing.  SLT was founded to be different from other mental health charities – uniquely accessible, inclusive, and community-embedded. 

As Treasurer, you will have governance leadership role: 

  • To maintain effective governance of the charity’s affairs, ensuring its financial viability.  

  • To ensure that proper processes and procedures exist for assuring all financial records, decisions and delegations are maintained.  

Key Responsibilities  

1. Strategic  

  • To assist and advise in the formation of the charity’s strategy with particular regard to ensuring that the organisation has the resources to deliver the strategy.  

2. Financial  

  • To ensure that the Board receives appropriate and timely budgetary and financial information on the activities of the charity including Annual Accounts.  

  • To ensure that all accounts are prepared and disclosed in the form required by funders and the relevant statutory bodies in compliance with Charity and Company law. 

  • To recommend to the Board appropriate changes and improvements to accounting procedures, controls and policies. 

  • To oversee the appointment of independent examiner and review on a regular basis. 

  • To work in close partnership with the Chief Executive and Finance Manager in executing their financial responsibilities. 

  • To authorise payment of monthly salaries of staff via the charity’s online banking. 

  3. Assets and Investments  

  • To ensure that the Charity has an appropriate investment policy  

  • To ensure that the Charity monitors the performance of its investments and to set an appropriate reserves policy  

  • To ensure that all equipment and assets are adequately maintained and accounted for. 

4. Governance  

  • To ensure that the Board is aware of its financial duties and responsibilities and need to comply with all legislation.  

  • To ensure that the organisation’s Financial Control Policy and the appointment of any external financial advisors are reviewed on a regular basis.
