The London Canal Museum is dedicated to educating and inspiring our visitors with the history of London’s canals – how they’ve shaped London’s development, the ordinary people that lived and worked on them, as well as the entrepreneurs who profited from them. We want to pass on the heritage of the canals so that future generations can learn about London’s industrial and social past.
We are looking for enthusiastic and reliable volunteers to serve as boat guides on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays between April and October, with the potential for additional trips outside of this timeframe.
As a volunteer boat guide, you will be responsible for welcoming passengers onto the boat, guiding and serving a hot drink to passengers using an urn. The museum will provide training in guiding and content for volunteers, as well as some additional emergency boat steering training.
The schedule for boat trips is as follows:
- Wednesdays: Alternating weekly between an 11:15 return trip to Camden, 15:00 cream tea and a 11:15 Historic trip using a historic boat going to Kingsland Basin.
- Thursdays: 11:00, 12:00, 14:00 Islington Tunnel Boat Trips, and 15:00 Cream Tea Tunnel Trip
- Fridays: 11:15 Extended Return Boat Trip, alternating between the museum and Little Venice or the museum and Victoria Park. These trips take between 4-5 hours
- Sundays: 11:00, 12:00, 14:00, 15:00, and 16:00 Islington Tunnel Boat Trips, with the last trip being one-way, dropping off at Angel.
Shifts vary between 1-5 hours with days being split between a morning and afternoon guide.
Personal Spec:
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Ability to provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere for visitors
- Strong organisational and time management skills
- Previous guiding experience or a willingness to learn and be trained
- Passion for heritage and history
