Chief Executive Officer (CEO) – Animal Welfare Campaigning Charity 

Location: Hybrid working (mostly home based with a head office in Godalming, regular travel across the UK to meet politicians, supporters and other stakeholders) 
Salary: £75,000-£95,000

About the Role: 

As our CEO, you will be responsible for shaping and delivering the strategic vision of the charity. This is a pivotal moment for a new CEO to make their mark, as we reassess our strategy and priorities following the General Election and seek to leverage opportunities with the newly formed government. 

Working closely with the Board of Trustees, you will lead the organisation in its mission to effect change, grow its influence and maximise the impact of our campaigns. 

Your role will involve: 

• Leadership: Inspiring and managing a talented team, ensuring a culture of collaboration, inclusivity and accountability. 

• Strategy: Driving the charity’s strategic direction, ensuring the effective execution of campaigns and initiatives. 

• Financial Management: Overseeing the financial health of the charity, ensuring sustainability and growth. 

• Advocacy & Public Representation: Acting as the public face of the charity, representing us in the media, with stakeholders and at key events. 

• Stakeholder Engagement: Building relationships with supporters, donors, policymakers and wider third sector to advance the charity’s objectives. 

About You: 

You are a strategic thinker with proven leadership experience, ideally within the nonprofit sector. You have a strong commitment to animal welfare, with the ability to motivate and inspire teams while navigating complex challenges. 

You will bring: 

• A track record of success in leadership roles, with experience in advocacy, fundraising, or campaigning. 

• A deep understanding of financial management, charity regulations and governance. 

• Strong communication and public speaking skills, with the confidence to represent the charity on a national stage.

Director of Fundraising and Marketing & Communications

Having recently won a major national award for Fundraising Team of the Year at the annual Third Sector awards, East Anglia's Children's Hospices (EACH) is now seeking an outstanding income generation leader to help realise it’s ambitions of reaching more children, young people and families across the East Anglian region that need our care.

We’re looking for an experienced Director of Fundraising and Marketing & Communications to join the executive leadership team at EACH. This role offers flexibility to work from any of our three hospices at Milton near Cambridge, The Treehouse in Ipswich and The Nook, near Norwich, combined with hybrid working.

East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) provides specialist care for babies, children and young people with life-threatening conditions across Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk and supports their families. All three of our hospices are rated as Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

As Director of Fundraising and Marketing & Communications you will lead the strategic planning and delivery of the Marketing and Fundraising annual plan (£7.5m) across all income streams, including major giving, community and events, corporate, trust and foundation teams. This is a critical leadership position, reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, and a key member of the Senior Leadership Team at EACH.

You’ll be leading a talented team of 30, encouraging, empowering and inspiring colleagues to innovate in ways which help us deliver our overall objectives. You’ll underpin this income generation experience with detailed forecasting and activity planning.

Are you:

Highly knowledgeable and experienced in delivering primary income streams with experience of develop income strategies to deliver year on year growth 

Do you have:

• Significant people management skills with experience leading a team of professionals
• Thorough understanding of fundraising, including identification research, solicitation, pitching and account management.
• Knowledge of the scope and content of the Code of Fundraising Practice.
• Proven experience of working to and achieving ambitious targets.
• Proven experience of engaging major donors and stewarding high value and influential relationships that deliver significant giving.
• Experience in managing large budgets (£3m +) with strong finance acumen.
• Additional experience in leading Marketing/Communications teams would be desirable

JOB PURPOSE

There has never been a more challenging time for refugees. As our Director of People, you will provide strategic leadership and direction for human resources and organisational development, ensuring the charity remains a top-tier employer that attracts, retains, and develops talent. This is a key leadership role, where you will drive organisational culture, ensure compliance with UK employment laws, and foster an inclusive and high-performing workplace aligned with the charity's values and goals. Reporting directly to the CEO and sitting on the Senior Management Team (SMT), this is an exciting opportunity to be the first Director of People for the charity, which has grown rapidly since its inception in 2020. You will have the opportunity to shape your future team, which currently includes a Senior Manager of HR & Ops who is interim and some support from our Operations Officer.  

This is a part time position - 3 or 4 days per week.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic HR Leadership:

• Develop and implement a comprehensive People & Skills Strategy aligned with the charity’s mission and goals.
• Develop the annual budget and manage expenditure for all areas of responsibility. 
• Lead the creation of a positive organisational culture, promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion at all levels.
• Advise the CEO and senior leadership on HR issues, trends, and best practices.
• Champion staff well-being, engagement, and development, ensuring a culture of continuous learning and growth.
• Represent the charity at external HR and humanitarian forums, conferences, and events.
• Work closely with the Board of Trustees and lead in the management of the Board’s Remuneration Committee.

Recruitment and Talent Management

• Oversee the recruitment and onboarding process, ensuring the charity attracts diverse and qualified candidates.
• Develop talent retention strategies, ensuring the charity is an employer of choice in the humanitarian sector.
• Implement learning and development programmes to nurture leadership, enhance skills, and ensure compliance with sector-specific training (e.g., fundraising / line management skills, safeguarding, data protection).

Performance and HR Compliance

• Oversee performance management systems, ensuring they are fair, transparent, and supportive of staff development.
• Ensure compliance with UK employment legislation, including employment contracts, grievances, disciplinary procedures, and workplace policies.
• Provide oversight of health and safety regulations, safeguarding standards, and risk management across all organisational levels.
• Responsible for maintaining and continuousy improving the charity’s HR software system and other HR platforms.
• Ensure compliance with data protection laws for all HR related information.
• Use data to generate insights, inform decision-making and improve processes.

Employee Engagement and Culture

• Lead on creating a culture of collaboration, empathy, and shared commitment to the charity’s values.
• Design and implement employee engagement initiatives to enhance job satisfaction and motivation.
• Ensure effective communication channels between leadership and staff, including regular staff surveys and feedback mechanisms.

Key Skills and Experience

• Proven experience in a senior HR leadership role in the UK charity sector.
• Solid understanding of UK employment law and most recent best practices.  A commitment to continuous professional development in this area.
• Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with experience implementing organisational change in this area.
• Demonstrated ability to manage complex employee relations issues sensitively and effectively.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to influence and inspire at all levels of the organisation.
• Level 7 CIPD qualification (or equivalent) highly desirable.
• Experience working in international agencies or NGOs highly desirable. 
• Understanding of refugee issues and/or experience working with vulnerable communities would be a significant advantage.

Eden Brown Charities is delighted to be partnering with the fantastic Sebastians Action Trust to recruit a new Head of Fundraising at a really pivotal time for the charity.

This registered charity offers short restorative breaks at its highly specialised purpose-built centre, together with practical and emotional support to children with serious illnesses and their families. The charity offers a continuously evolving program of care for families of children aged 0-19. Their holistic approach includes short breaks for immediate and extended families depending on the circumstances, as well as emotional, social, and practical support, tailored to the unique needs of each family. They prioritise on the basis of need, respecting choice, individuality, and the challenges of adjusting to a new and often difficult reality. Over the past few months the charity has been made a number of changes following an expected reduction in long standing funding, and the residual impact of the pandemic. This role is the exciting opportunity to lead the fundraising regrowth of the charity with a new a strategy, a renewed focus and all the organisation behind it's fundraising success.

The role

As Head of Fundraising and Engagement you will be part of the senior leadership team and you will play a key role in both developing and delivering an effective fundraising growth strategy. You will be responsible for leading the team and growing and diversifying income across various income streams.

You will work with the Head of Finance to set budgets and forecasts and you will ensure that each member of the team is enabled to achieve their targets. You will also work collaboratively across the organisation to ensure that you are growing the charity's profile, and work alongside service colleagues to best engage beneficiaries and stakeholders in the charity. You will ensure that an exceptional stewardship journey is implemented and imbedded within the organisation.

About You
You will have had extensive experience within the third sector preferably across multiple income streams, some experience of Marketing and Communications would be desirable too. You will be able to demonstrate that you have grown income significantly as well as be able to show that you have had experience in developing and implementing a fundraising strategy. You will have experience of managing a team including staff and volunteers.

You will be able to show that you have had experience in forecasting and working towards financial targets as well as proven experience in managing a team. Experience in working with a CRM System is also desirable as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills.

This is a Hybrid role with some time spent in the office in Bracknell and at the Charities Specialist Centre in Basingstoke. You will be a car driver and have access to a car. IRC UK 

IRC UK is part of the IRC global network, which has its headquarters in New York. Our team in the UK works to raise IRC’s international profile, deliver policy and practice change, and increase funding to help restore health, safety, education, economic wellbeing and power to people devastated by conflict and disaster. Since 2021, IRC UK has also provided integration services directly to refugees in England, a programme that is rapidly growing. 

In Europe, the IRC also has offices in Berlin, Brussels, Geneva and Stockholm. 

The Purpose of the Role

The Executive Director, IRC UK is responsible for delivering all of IRC’s targets in the UK, particularly with respect to fundraising, advocacy and communications but also UK finance, operations, and people and culture. The Executive Director leads the UK Senior Management Team.

An important objective for the Executive Director IRC UK will be maintaining the UK as a net contributing office within the IRC and to broaden, deepen and make more sustainable the IRC’s access to funding in the UK. This must be through a compelling and relevant external engagement strategy that harnesses the best of our programming globally.

Reporting to the Senior Vice President, IRC Europe and the UK Board of Trustees, the role provides organisational and staff leadership and accountability to IRC UK in a shared management structure. The Executive Director, IRC UK works closely with members of the IRC Senior Leadership Team for Europe to form and implement the departmental organisational agenda.

Given this matrix management structure, it will be critical to the continued success of IRC UK that the Executive Director, IRC UK build a highly effective team by influencing and collaborating with senior leaders across Europe and the global organisation.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Leadership  Motivate and build a highly effective and collaborative UK senior team to deliver performance against targets in private and statutory fundraising, advocacy and communications.

• Support the board in delivering its objective to ensure governance and oversight in line with UK statutory obligations e.g. charities Commission and Companies house requirements

• Ensure that the UK Board is aware of and engaging effectively with IRC UK strategic priorities, and lead all ongoing Board engagement,

• Embed a high-performing, “can do” culture across IRC UK which brings together contributions from all functions.

• Provide effective and collaborative matrix management along with colleagues in regional functions in Europe (i.e. communications, policy and advocacy, HR, Finance and Operations) and IRC’s global award management and technical units.

• Leadership of an office of around 250 staff, including staff in UK focused positions and also UK based international staff

• Communicate corporate values both internally and externally and lead by example in organisational ethics and morals.

Stakeholder Engagement and Public Representation

• Develop a stakeholder engagement plan across our various internal and external stakeholder groups.

• Act as an effective ambassador with external stakeholders including government, institutional donors , corporate and private funders in the UK, in close collaboration with the SVP Europe.

• Effectively represent IRC as a member Trustee and engage with the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC)

• Effectively represent IRC and engage IRC Patron

• Act as a compelling spokesperson to share IRC’s positions in British media and publicly advocate for IRC policy priorities

• Effectively engage with all media and opinion-forming organisations to protect and enhance the reputation and visibility of IRC UK.

• Develop a strong relationship with UK charities and regulators to proactively improve the standing of the organisation, and ensure its compliance on all reporting requirements.

Planning, Delivery and Performance

• Take overall accountability for achieving agreed performance measures in all areas of the IRC UK’s activities e.g. Resettlement Asylum and Integration (RAI) programme, particularly fundraising, communications and advocacy in the UK.

• Define and monitor the effectiveness of IRC UK’s operating model to ensure quality, service and cost-effective management of resources.

• Define and track key performance indicators with the UK Senior Management Team to ensure and report on delivery of objectives.

• Contribute to the IRC 2020-25 strategic planning process by coordinating the input from the UK as required by the SVP Europe and the Global Strategy Unit.

• Review management and financial reporting and statements to determine progress and status in attaining objectives, and revise plans in accordance with current conditions.

Governance

• Represent IRC UK at the Europe Senior Management Team meetings.

• Lead the IRC UK Senior Management Team.

• A member of the Global Senior Leaders’ Group led by the IRC President.

• Report to the IRC UK Board of Trustees and prepare three annual Board meetings.

• Create sustainable and effective internal structures between global functional departments and the UK office.

• Ensure IRC UK operates effectively within all relevant statutory, regulatory and quality frameworks and to the highest ethical and governance standards.

• Ensure effective financial and operational controls are in place for the organisation including systems to ensure fundraising operates on a highly ethical basis.

• Oversee an appropriate risk management culture and process.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential Experience:

• Significant experience in leading, managing and executing across complex not-for-profit organisations including leading Senior Management Teams.

• Track record of advocacy and influencing senior stakeholders across government, business and other not-for-profit organisations.Track record of being a spokesperson and public advocate on humanitarian or related topics

Skills, Knowledge and Qualifications:

• Strong fundraising skills and track record of driving fundraising results.

• Ability to build strong relationships across a complex, matrixed stakeholder map evidenced by moving stakeholder groups to action. Proven track-record in building consensus.

• Flexibility and the ability to thrive in a global matrixed environment.

• Excellent diplomatic and negotiation skills.

• Strong understanding of, and networks in, the UK not-for-profit and policy environments.
