Job description

The Freud Museum are seeking an experienced, people-focussed Acting Director with an understanding and empathy for small museums and the charitable sector to support them through a period of transition ahead of the appointment of their next permanent Director.

Balancing hands-on operational delivery, coaching and support an eye for detail, and the ability to see the bigger picture, this is an opportunity to make a real difference.

Who we are

In a hectic world of quick fixes and polarised narratives, the Freud Museum aim to create spaces of warm tranquillity, spark curiosity and foster deeper reflection. The Freud Museum are passionate about making psychoanalytic ideas accessible and relevant to increasingly diverse, non-specialist audiences.

As Acting Director, you will be central to ensuring this work continues, and the organisation is well prepared for the arrival of the permanent Director and the next stage in its development.

Who are we looking for?

The Freud Museum are seeking an experienced senior operational manager, with knowledge across a range of organisational and administrative functions, and experience of working on an interim basis.

This six-month opportunity is focussed on leading and supporting the museum team as they continue to implement new approaches to operational delivery, equipping the museum to drive greater audience reach, and to build on its existing reputation.

Ideally from a charitable or museum background, although candidates from other backgrounds with relevant interest or experience will also be considered, you should have strong people skills, with the ability to coach and support the team through this period of transition.

Working with our small team you will need to play an active delivery role to progress key priorities, as well as supporting colleagues across the museum to deliver on wider organisational goals. As an organisation focused on the importance of the house and collection as our focal point, you should be available to spend the majority of your working week in the museum.
