We are looking for an enthusiastic and proactive press officer to help raise the profile of World Horse Welfare and promote our charity to external audiences. This role would suit a person with experience as a reporter on a news desk or in media relations who is looking for a PR role within the charity sector.
You will support the Head of Communications in managing the charity’s news flow and media relations, achieving accurate and favourable mentions across specialist, regional, national and international media.
You will be required to proactively seek opportunities to raise the Charity’s profile and publicise the work and messages of World Horse Welfare.

Essential Skills & Experience
- At least 3 years’ experience of volunteer management. We’re particularly looking for experience with online recruitment and management of volunteers.
- Experience of establishing new volunteering and training systems, so you can help us scale up operations.
- An understanding of best practice and the regulations around volunteering.
- Thorough understanding of safeguarding practices and issues. The postholder will be the safeguarding lead in this role.
- Experience of presenting to groups of people and facilitating discussion and initiatives and coaching individuals.
- Strong writing and presentation skills.
- Experience of working within voluntary sector.

RESPONSIBILITIES
We expect to recruit from our members and from the community of those who stammer or those who support people who stammer (speech & language therapists, family and friends).
- Recruit and induct new volunteers to support our services, working with the Services Director and the Training & Outreach Lead.
- Work with the service managers to review training and update training modules.
- Ensure there is appropriate training, support, supervision and acknowledgement for volunteers and ensure processes comply with the charity’s values
- Research and write volunteer policies and procedures, including risk assessments.
- Support and recruit volunteer community leaders for our groups and networks; work with them to aim for consistent quality across the groups experience and develop an online training programme for leaders. Longer term, put a funding case together to support a training weekend for community leaders.
- Keep records on which community groups are active and identify areas of need and feedback mechanisms.
- Work with Content & Communications Lead to produce regular mailings and volunteer recruitment campaigns.
- Keep up to date with legislation, best practice and policy related to volunteering and make any necessary modifications to accommodate changes.
- Maintain the database of volunteers and ensure all volunteers are registered members.
- Manage budgets and resources, including the reimbursement of volunteer expenses.
PLEASE NOTE
This is a hybrid role, and all staff are expected to attend team meetings, held in London, every 6-8 weeks.

About the Role

This role will lead on the recruitment and management of major donors as well as leading a team that also has responsibility for trusts, foundations and corporate fundraising.
We are currently nearing the end of our Your New Hospice capital appeal and are looking for someone to take our high value giving into this exciting new phase. This role will be responsible for building a strategy and direction for the team, building a portfolio of major donors, and creating and optimising business processes. This role will also be a part of the Income Generation Leadership team and so will be expected to contribute to a collaborative and supportive team environment that values cross team working and fluid supporter journeys.
The successful candidate will:
- Have significant experience of securing and cultivating five figure donations from high net worth donors.
- Have experience in working in one of either trusts, foundations or corporate fundraising.

As we start to deliver on our new funding portfolio we established a new Portfolio Development Team to sit at the heart of the Fund’s England directorate. This team sets the direction for our funding, ensuring our whole funding portfolio is delivering on our four community-led missions; our commitment to take an equity based approach to tackling inequality; and our ambition to be more than a funder.
England Portfolio Development Team
The permanent England Portfolio Development Team is taking forward the new England portfolio, ensuring we are delivering impact through our current funding portfolio whilst also looking to the future and developing new funding initiatives and ways of working to meet our 2030 vision.
This small team of eight works across the whole England directorate, the wider Fund, and externally with people, communities and civil society organisations who share our vision.
The team is responsible for:
- Setting the direction for our funding, including setting out the change we want to support in England’s communities through our funding and gathering insights to assess whether we are succeeding or not
- Thinking, exploring and leading on portfolio development and implementation of the new funding portfolio – ensuring we are delivering impact across our current funding portfolio (national, regional, small grants) and developing new funding initiatives and ways of working where necessary

- Gathering and analysing insights to understand and effectively articulate the impact we are making through our new portfolio, including commissioning research and analysis, convening partners, stakeholders and communities where necessary; and ensuring that insight informs funding practice
- Engaging extensively internally, harnessing the expertise and insights of the wider England directorate and working across the Fund to ensure we link appropriately to ‘One Fund’ approaches
- Delivering our new approach to external engagement, partnerships, policy development, positioning and influencing in England in line with our community-led missions, more than a funder priorities and new ways of working
- Launching and delivering new funding initiatives in line with our new community-led missions and our equity based approach to tackling inequality.

Reporting to the Head of Region and working alongside some of the most talented fundraising professionals in the sector, you will support and guide individuals who raise funds and volunteer for Marie Curie in our communities, helping them reach their goals and, in turn, raise essential funds for our cause.
The role of a Community Fundraiser is incredibly diverse. You will assist people raising money through third-party events, support local participation in national campaigns like The Great Daffodil Appeal, recruit and guide fundraising groups and volunteers, engage small businesses and corporate partners, and encourage individuals to take on their own fundraising challenges.
You'll witness firsthand the incredible efforts of our fundraisers and develop strong relationships with truly inspiring people. Duties & Responsibilities:
- Support and grow fundraising groups with guidance from the Region's Fundraising Volunteer Development Manager.
- Form new community fundraising groups by hosting events and meetings with potential volunteers.
- Execute an annual volunteer recruitment plan, including volunteer induction, training, and management.
- Building Fundraising Relationships
- Provide excellent stewardship to supporters, expanding the network of individuals, groups, and corporate supporters.
- Follow up on leads from the Hot Prospect Action List and represent Marie Curie confidently in various settings.
- Support high-value event participants to achieve targets and deliver excellent service to the public, encouraging support.
- Collaborate with local businesses, Marie Curie Retail staff, and other fundraising teams to support initiatives.
- Meet annual budgets and performance targets, providing timely updates and monthly reports to the Head of Region.
Key Criteria:
- Proven experience managing volunteers or community engagement in a paid or voluntary capacity.
- Exceptional interpersonal and networking skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate.
- Strong organisational abilities, including planning, prioritisation, and working to budgets and targets.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and database management.
- A full UK driver's license and willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed.
- Experience with corporate partnerships, local media engagement, and campaign implementation.
- Knowledge of PR/marketing principles and fundraising operations.
- Must have a valid driving license and ideally access to a car for regular travel

Key Responsibilities
BUSINESS MANAGEMENT
