Balance is a specialist provider of range of progressive and high-quality services for vulnerable people living in SW and West London.

Our primary purpose is the development of services that support and stregthen the self-confidence, ability and independence of adults living with a learning disability or enduring mental health need. The Role

Our dynamic team supports over 80 adults living within SW London. The role is predominantly lone working in the community, but you will be supported by and part of a large support worker team.

Experience is not required, as full training will be provided. Many of those who work with us have never worked in social care previously.

Purpose of the job/about the role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Challenge Events Team at Dementia UK, where you will help coordinate the day-to-day activities of the team, providing crucial administrative support and helping to deliver excellent supporter experiences.

As the Challenge Events Assistant, you will act as the first point of contact for challenge event supporters, responding to enquiries within agreed timeframes and ensuring an excellent stewardship to motivate, recognise and reward fundraisers to encourage their long-term support.

You will be responsible for fulfilling fundraising materials, coordinating administrative processes for the team and maintaining the fundraising database to ensure all supporter information is up to date. To support the Programme Finance Manager in running efficient and effective programme financial accounting, programme financial management and programme financial reporting processes in relation to AKF (UK)’s programmes and grants. To provide support to the full life cycle of grants: from donor concept notes/proposals to final reports. To maintain a close working relationship with AKF (UK) finance and programme teams and relevant staff from across the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) agencies and external donors as required.

Programme financial planning, management and reporting

In close consultation with the programmes/partnerships team:

• Support the design and implementation of effective quality controls to ensure compliance with donor requirements and to maintain appropriate donor stewardship, including through manuals, checklists, templates, and other tools

• Monitor spending and activity implementation and ensure regular scheduling of grants management meetings, alerting the Programme Finance Manager and Programmes/Partnerships team about significant under or overspend on a timely basis

• Maintain internal tools that track active grants, cost recoveries and cash balances and ensure they are kept up-to-date

• Maintain internal tools tracking pipeline and secured funding (Awards Information Management System -AIMS) and ensure they are kept up-to-date

• Prepare financial information for internal reporting purposes, including (but not limited to) the quarterly CEO report, monthly dashboard and quarterly cash balances (co-finance) report.

Grants management and compliance

• Maintain the grants management tracker so that grants are properly recorded and monitored, ensuring that input from the Programmes/Partnerships team and the Programme Finance Manager are incorporated on a timely basis

• Undertake administrative tasks related to grants, including setting up of grant codes (pipeline and secured), collecting and forwarding information to different units and executing follow up tasks as required

• Review budgets for concepts/proposals, ensuring the inclusion of AKF(UK) costs, make recommendations for improvements and liaise with the programme/partnerships team and field units to ensure these are complete, accurate, consistent with the narrative, compliant with donor requirements, and correctly formatted for presentation to donors

• Support the preparation, review and submission process for donor financial (and narrative as relevant, e.g. ECHO) reports to ensure compliance with donor requirements; ensure reports are produced on time to a high standard and are consistent with the narrative

• Ensure timely submission of cash requests as required by donor contracts and internal sub-grant agreements 

• Prepare donor and internal sub-grant agreements with AKDN agencies, field units, and implementing partners, including (but not limited to) those with co-financing

• Ensure that donor and AKDN rules are being adhered to regarding procurement, accounting, project expenditure, and implementation of activities through regular reporting, engagement with the field, and remote spot checks

• Carry out monitoring visits and audits on specific projects as necessary

• Assist in the preparation, support, and follow up of internal or external grant audits and expenditure verifications of AKDN field units, including direct liaison with auditors as required, and ensure that management (programmes and finance) is apprised, including through maintaining and updating the audit and disallowance summary

• Develop and deliver relevant training and reference material on grants management, including procurement, donor regulations, IATI, finance and reporting for Programme, Finance, and other field-based staff; act as a resource for agencies/field units on donor regulations and compliance

• Ensure all AKF (UK) direct grants are reflected on the IATI system, and update the required information on a quarterly basis

Audit, internal controls and risk

• Contribute on programme finance to all audits and statutory compliance in line with UK and AKF/AKDN regulations and compliance requirements

• In collaboration with field units, prepare due diligence assessments for potential new partners or donors and ensure these are refreshed periodically

• Troubleshoot financial, donor compliance and procurement-related queries identified through monitoring grants or as raised by management or field units

Carry out any other duties as assigned by the Programme Finance Manager or the Head of Finance and Operations.

The role will involve travel to countries in which we operate grants. Normally this could be 2 – 3 trips per year.

Qualifications

• CCAB qualified accountant (desirable).

Experience

• 3 years relevant experience in financial accounting and financial reporting

• Experience of designing and managing effective administrative systems and procedures

• Experience of budgeting, forecasting and cash-flow management

• Experience working in international organisations or donor agencies including field-level implementation highly desirable

• Experience working with EC, ECHO, DFID or equivalent and familiarity with the various compliance rules and regulations highly desirable

Skills

• Good interpersonal, customer care and liaison skills with a wide range of stakeholders

• First rate oral and written communication skills

• Ability to work under pressure and to manage competing priorities and deliver to tight deadlines

Job Purpose 

The Carer Hospital Project Officer will play a crucial role in helping unpaid Carers to get the right support at the right time to help them access the appropriate Carer related support in the respective boroughs. This role works with individuals in a person centre way and support Carer needs by making it Personal, Coordinated and Enabling. 

They will work closely with ASC Duty Social Workers and other partners in Health & Social Care to support Carers in the hospital and ensure they have the necessary information and support.

Key Tasks 

• Being present and visible within their allocated Hospital sites – to both residents/carers and staff 

• Being ‘expert’ in the statutory and non-statutory Carers support services available in their allocated area – and across NEL more broadly – recognising that many carers access Hospital sites outside of the borough in which they live (we will be developing a ‘directory’ of NEL wide Carers services as part of the project to support this) 

• Having a comprehensive understanding of the current and emerging legislation surrounding carers, their entitlements and the Statutory Carers Assessment process 

• Building and maintaining good working relationships with hospital staff – to promote best practice around the identification, support and recording of Carers (in line with the Carers Hospital Discharge Tool kit’).  This could include the delivery of Carer Awareness training/sessions for Hospital Staff 

• Attending Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings as / when appropriate. 

• Effectively explaining what a carer is as many people don’t see themselves as a carer 

• Identifying carers within the hospital – ideally at the earliest possible stage/ the point of admission 

• Actively promote local carer support services within the hospital 

• Informing the Carer, they have the right to a carers assessment and supporting a referral to the relevant Local Authority/Provider where necessary 

• Helping to give Carers a ‘voice’ within the Hospital and support them to be engaged in care / discharge planning wherever possible/appropriate 

• Ensuring that any identified carers have been informed of the broader support available to them and ‘intelligently signposting’ them 

• Attending monthly team meetings with the Project Manager, evaluation partner and other Carer Hospital Project Officer to review impact data, share learning and identify opportunities to maximise impact 

• Attending quarterly project partnership board meetings with all members involved in the project 

• Attending any meeting/ events as appropriate within their carers support service 

• Proactively escalating any issues and or ideas about how services can be improved to Hospital leads and the Project Manager 

• Co-producing and delivering the TEC pilot 

• Working with the evaluation team on key findings and data from the project 

Administration 

• Keep accurate and up-to-date records of contact with clients, including the use of relative databases (relevant training will be provided) and the Age UK East London Charity Log data base. 

• Provide additional data as required e.g., case studies, outcomes monitoring 

• Each Carer Hospital Project Officer/provider will be required to submit monitoring data to the Project Manager monthly.

• Data from the first 3 months of delivery will be captured and base-lined, and Carer Hospital Project Officers will be expected to increase their activity/reach by 5% in each additional quarter of project delivery. 

 Quality 

• To deliver all work in line with Age UK Quality Mark standards 

• To ensure that all work is in compliance with the Care Act 2014 

• To attend mandatory and discretionary training as required 

• To be familiar with and to implement Age UK East London’s policies and procedures 

 General

As Reward and Benefits Manager in the People Operations team, you will be the subject matter expert on all aspects of employee reward, ensuring Dementia UK has effective, fair and transparent pay practices, and a benefits package that sets us apart.

Working closely with the People and Finance teams, you will lead the end-to-end payroll process, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant monthly processing for a headcount of circa 300 staff. You will manage all employee benefits for the charity, liaising with suppliers, negotiating favourable terms, and proposing updates and improvements. Night Support Workers enable vulnerable people living in a variety of different tenures to manage their tenancies/ licences and move towards greater independence within the community by providing a flexible and individually tailored support package. The opportunity:

As a Full Stack Engineer transitioning to AI, you will play a pivotal role in designing, building, and scaling AI-driven applications. Working alongside members of Better Society Capital’s teams, you’ll bridge the gap between complex AI systems and practical, user-facing solutions.

We’re not looking for somebody who is already an expert on all aspects of AI but we are looking for somebody that has a good breadth of IT expertise, the ability to translate complex technical language into something that non-experts can easily understand alongside a willingness to quickly learn and master new technologies and tools that will help Better Society Capital pragmatically implement suitable AI solutions to help our staff in delivering on our mission and goals. You’ll need to be a self-starter who is willing to investigate technologies and systems without requiring a great deal of technical oversight and steer as well as being capable of writing suitably targeted reports and deliver engaging content and initial training in new tools and techniques as we adopt them for all levels of staff with varying levels of traditional IT expertise.

What you will do:

Investigate AI tools and technologies

• Assess new AI tools for suitability.

• Continually learn about new AI technologies that are likely to be of use to Better Society Capital.

• Extend use of existing AI and conventional development tools already used at BSC (e.g. Copilot, ChatGPT, Anthropic Claude, Python, Power BI) as appropriate.

• Determine where decisions need to be taken regarding standardisation of tools and software.

Liaise with teams to determine and action suitable use cases

• Work closely with teams in quickly identifying what areas of their work are likely to be suitable for full or partial replacement with AI systems and which areas are less likely to be appropriate.

• Where AI can quickly be put to work in helping teams and the use case is sufficiently well understood, has value and can be quickly implemented, work with the team in doing so.

• Where good use cases are identified by you and the relevant teams, but these are large-scale or have legal, regulatory etc. implications; document at a high level how these could be implemented in future.

• Work with members of the team that are examining and improving existing data quality as well as in their efforts to ensure that collected future data is of high quality.

Work with BSC’s AI Taskforce in promoting AI use

• Champion throughout the organisation how all levels of staff can use AI to enhance their productivity.

• Develop suitable training materials and documentation (technical and user level) for adopted BSC AI systems.

• Present informal “How To” advice sessions on AI usage to staff.

• Contribute easily understood and directly useful AI usage techniques to suitable internal forums.

Assess and improve staff AI take up

• Survey staff for their views on what AI tools and techniques they are finding to be useful and where not.

• Use reporting tools to determine whether and where AI is being used at BSC in order to inform decisions as to the suitability of implemented AI systems/tools.

• Use reporting results to provide more training opportunities where appropriate, improve the usage experience, coverage and capabilities of useful AI related tools. Where tools are not proving to be useful for staff ether improve the implementation and training on the tools, replace them with alternative AI systems that are more suitable or if AI is not suitable in the relevant area, decommission the tool and replace it with conventional technologies as appropriate.

Experience (essential)

• Breadth of knowledge of IT tools and techniques, e.g. in areas such as database systems (e.g. SQL in general, SQL Server in particular), cloud platforms such as Microsoft 365 (e.g. in SharePoint) and programming skills (e.g. Python, PowerShell, VBA).
