Philanthropy Manager 

Job Description and Person Specification 

Reporting to: Head of Philanthropy in the Fundraising Team 

Location of Work: Home based. The post holder will be expected to travel to meet donors, travel to away days and team meetings in London. On occassion, you will need to be able to attend early morning breakfast visits therefore the post holder will need to live close to London.

The role may involve some irregular travel throughout England and Scotland. Expenses will be paid in line with our Travel and Expenses policy. 

Contract Type: Ideally full-time, 35 hours per week, although part time / flexible hours may be considered. The role may require occasional evening and weekend work

BACKGROUND 

Magic Breakfast provide a nutritious and filling breakfast to over 200,000 children and young people every school day. We work with schools in areas of high disadvantage, helping staff target the children most in need without barrier or stigma.  Magic Breakfast are ambitious to grow our impact to remove hunger as a barrier to learning for all children and young people in the UK. 

The new UK government’s Children’s Wellbeing Bill outlined in the King’s Speech, includes a requirement for free school breakfast clubs in every English primary school. This is a fantastic start towards ending child morning hunger. Magic Breakfast’s influence will be instrumental to ensuring school breakfasts are introduced in a way that is hunger-focused and barrier free. In 2021, the Scottish Government, pledged a not yet enacted promise to provide breakfast to primary children. 

Thousands of secondary school children are at risk of losing their free school breakfasts from September next year. For many of these students, this is their only opportunity to have a nutritious meal before facing a demanding school day, including taking exams.

JOB PURPOSE 

Magic Breakfast’s mission is to end child morning hunger in the UK now and for good the Philanthropy team’s role is to develop and deliver the charity's high net worth individual giving programme in line with Magic Breakfast’s strategic priorities to enable our organisational growth against our mission. 

We are seeking to grow income through further cultivation and stewardship of our potential and existing donors. Our High Value Giving teams are forecast to collectively raise £5.1m in 2021/22, up from £4.6m two years ago in 2019/20. The team includes partnerships with charitable trusts and foundations, corporate organisations, and high-net-worth individuals. 

Reporting into the Head of Philanthropy, this role will have a particular focus on ensuring that Magic Breakfast is offering the highest quality of donor care from start to finish, and building and developing our prospect pipeline.

We’re looking for a proactive person with excellent relationship building, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship skills as we seek to build our prospect pool, enhance or supporter journey and achieve our ambitious fundraising targets.

The Philanthropy Manager will have the opportunity to be innovative and creative, to create and test impactful donor journeys and engagement opportunities so Magic Breakfast’s supporters feel valued and can understand the transformational difference they are making to hungry children and their learning in the UK. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES  

• Manage your own portfolio of donors, providing excellent stewardship and strategies to uplift and secure multi year donations

• Work with Corporate, Trusts and Individual Giving teams to identify potential major donors and high value regular givers within Magic Breakfast’s donor portfolio and implement plans to develop these relationships;

• Support the Head of Philanthropy to build relationships with senior volunteers to garner their support and help encourage introductions to their networks

• Ensure all donations are thanked and recorded in a timely way, and logged accurately on salesforce

• Support Head of Philanthropy in accurately forecasting philanthropy income for each financial year, and ensure forecast income is updated monthly.

About the role

Right now, we’re looking for a technical expert with experience of developing and maintaining ELT pipelines to move data between enterprise applications (a mix of both in-house and external and on-prem and in the cloud). Day-to-day, you’ll be responsible for developing ETL processes using Fabric and Synapse linking from a variety of data sources to a wide variety of targets on-prem, cloud platforms and in Azure. We’ll also rely on you to ensure business requirements for new data feeds or changes are understood and translated into efficient and effective technical solutions. Exploring new ways to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of data management across Shelter will be important too, as will transforming and centralising raw data from multiple platforms into user friendly reporting data. Writing, validating and executing test plans, troubleshooting performance issues and supporting Shelter’s wider data management initiatives – all are aspects of this interesting and varied role.

Responsibilities of our Senior Financial Accountant:

• To lead and manage the financial accounting function including accounts receivable and payable and VAT with a team of 6
• To oversee financial processing for the whole organisation
• To develop and operate robust financial controls
• To provide cash flow management and forecasting
• To support end to end process ownership and improvement across the Finance function
• To provide support to all finance system users
• To maintain and develop the finance systems

About the Finance team:

• This is a key role within the Operational Finance team which forms part of the wider Finance function of the charity.  The wider Finance team is made up of around 25 people. 
• We have recently implemented a new Finance system and are looking for opportunities to maximise the benefit of our investment through improved process, data and analysis.

What we’re looking for in our Senior Financial Accountant:

• Experience of managing a team of at least six people
• Experience of building statutory accounts from trial balance and administering accounting software
• Experience of managing a balance sheet

You would be joining us at a time when in the middle of last year, we launched our new identity as the Leadership Skills Foundation (previously Sports Leaders UK) alongside a new 5-year ‘Evolve’ strategy. Having navigated the challenges of the pandemic, the organisation has naturally placed an emphasis in recent years on retaining and sustaining the existing relationships we have with the 2,500 organisations (centres) that deliver our programmes.

Looking ahead, with new programmes and partnerships emerging, this role will now play a significant part in helping us expand the network of centres delivering Leadership Skills Foundation programmes and broaden the audiences we reach. Over the next few years, we aim to create an adaptable leadership skill offer that will increase our reach to more young people across, fully establishing the Leadership Skills Foundation as the trusted voice for leadership skills development.

We have ambitions to empower a more diverse range of young people with opportunities to develop essential leadership and life skills, regardless of their background. Having recently secured a strategic partnership with Sport England, this role will play a significant role in activating that programme, leading the co-ordination, engagement and management of local and regional stakeholders to deliver leadership programmes with identified target audiences, groups and individuals. 

The role will initially be a fixed term contract (to July 2027) but we aim to secure further funding for the role to extend.

You will act as an influential member of the organisation’s newly established Programme Delivery Team delivering the Programmes and Projects Strategy aimed at supporting growth, reach, and impact of Leadership Skills Foundation programmes among underserved and/or under-represented communities and individuals, which will in turn, benefit thousands of young people across the UK. 

This role will require someone with the ability to engage and inspire others, with strong and effective communication skills. You will need to be comfortable working collaboratively as well as independently and want to pro-actively lead on making a positive social difference to the individuals and groups benefitting from our programmes.

Hours: 36 hours typically 8.30 – 16.30. Monday – Friday. 

Role summary 

Main duties and responsibilities 

1. Responsibility for co-ordinating, engaging and managing local stakeholders to deliver leadership programmes with identified target audiences, groups and individuals 
2. Develop a shared understanding of the needs and barriers young people in underserved communities face in accessing leadership skill development and volunteering opportunities. 
3. Provide support to identified local delivery stakeholders to address and overcome these barriers to engage the target audiences. 
4. Identify and co-ordinate work with local delivery partners to create and activate local delivery area plans 
5. With support, develop and oversee the process and distribution of agreed programme delivery funding to local delivery partners
6. Deliver training, support and orientation to local delivery partners
7. Support identified stakeholders to test adapted leadership skill development programmes and learn from the delivery to inform future delivery. 
8. Establish a delivery feedback loop to inform the development of learning resources and programmes to overcome the needs and barriers young people in underserved communities face
9. Provide opportunities for the research plan, developed by the Programme Delivery Research Team, to be implemented to drive the improvement of strategic, business and operational planning and delivery
10. Provide connectivity between your work/engagement with delivery centres and the work of the Business and Market Development Teams
11. Capture and share best practice to support the wider adoption across community and partner networks
12. Work collaboratively with partners and stakeholders to successfully influence and deliver agreed programme objectives and key results
