Volunteer Shop Assistants carry out a wide range of tasks in their roles. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, keeping our shop floor full and organised or supporting with raffle ticket sales and promoting gift aid.

When you begin your role, you will receive a mix of e-learning and in-person training to get you started. Throughout the role, you will receive refresher training as required as well as ongoing support, reimbursement for role-related expenses and the opportunity to further shape the volunteering you do.

Aloha Foundation Uganda
Our startup helps to improve literacy and numeracy among primary school going children and in the long run reduce school drop outs thus improving education completion and transition into better employment opportunities
In Northern Uganda, access to quality education remains a significant challenge, especially in underserved primary schools. The 2021 Uwezo report highlights that literacy and numeracy levels among P3-P7 students in Uganda are only 39.5% and 48.85%, respectively, with the Northern region performing the worst in the country. Although the government Universal Primary Education (UPE) policy has increased school access, the quality of education is still poor because it is based on the traditional curriculum that focuses heavily on exams, neglecting basic skills and preventing early identification and resolution of student issues. High enrolment and automatic promotion under the UPE policy further undermine learning quality.
Our intervention, Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL), aims to improve learning outcomes through regular assessments and tailored support. This approach fosters essential teacher-student engagement, addressing challenges promptly to ensure all learners receive the support needed to reach their educational targets.
How it works: Students are grouped into learning grous based on their competences and tailored teaching is availed to them at their learning levels. To sort students according to their learning levels, various assessments, both formal and informal, are employed. The formal assessments include Baseline, Midline, and Endline assessments. We are currently organizing to run a pilot program that spans 120 hours over three months, split evenly between Numeracy (60 hours) and Literacy (60 hours). Initially, a baseline assessment will gauge the students’ competencies, guiding the formation of initial learning level groups. At the 30-hour mark, a midline assessment will measure progress and prompt potential re-grouping based on improvements. Upon completing the 60 hours for both literacy and numeracy, an endline assessment will assess the pilot’s overall progress with learning outcomes. Between the formal assessments, we anticipate progress and will therefore carryout ongoing qualitative assessments, such as bi-weekly evaluations, driven by teachers’ professional judgment and observations of students’ development. Teachers will receive guidelines to support their decisions on student progression.
Fundraising Coordinator
Role Description
We are looking for a volunteer fundraising coordinator to help with the following:
- Planning and executing fundraising strategies.
- Identifying and cultivating potential donors.
- Organizing fundraising events and campaigns.
- Writing grant proposals and funding applications.
- Reporting on fundraising activities and outcomes.
Volunteer 2-3 hours per week for 3-5 months remotely.

Appropriate Adult's support children and vulnerable adults when they are detained in police custody. With the Southwark & Lambeth Appropriate Adult Service, you will be trained, supervised and supported to be an Appropriate Adult in Southwark & Lambeth police stations. We are there to ensure vulnerable detainees understand their rights, we safeguard their welfare and effective participation as well as ensuring they are treated fairly during this criminal justice process.

Havering Young People’s Mentoring Service provides support, advice and guidance to young people aged 10-18, encouraging them to make positive choices and achieve their goals.
Mentors are matched with a young person and meet with them on a weekly basis, for a period of up to 6 months. During this time, a strong relationship is built through a variety of activities and trips, including a monthly group meeting with other volunteers and young people engaged in the Service.
In order to become a mentor, potential volunteers will be required to attend a two day training programme before being accepted onto the programme. Volunteers will need to be over 18 years old and be willing to undergo an enhanced DBS check plus provide references.
This role includes:
- Attending an initial matching meeting with a young person
- Committing to 6 months of mentoring with a young person
- Meeting a young person once a week for around 2 hours
- Providing brief recording following meetings to the Volunteer Team
- Working with a young person to review their goals and plan for mentoring
- Accompanying a young person to monthly group meetings
- Acting in the best interests of a young person
Skills and experience required::
- Confident and able to communicate well with young people from a range of different backgrounds
- Can engage with staff and partners to promote the aims and quality of the Early Help Service, and comply with relevant policies and procedures
- Commitment to act in the best interests of young people and comply with jointly-agreed plans
- Experience of working with children or young people, in any capacity
- Willing to undertake training where necessary
- Enthusiasm and commitment towards child development and keeping children safe

Our amazing team of volunteers help us run over 100 shops across England and Wales. Every donated item that you sort, prepare and sell helps to raise vital funds to support us in our mission to make sure no one, no matter how complex their disabilities, is isolated, left out, or unable to fulfil their potential. Our shops are at the heart of local communities – sharing the work of Sense, and helping to secure support for our life changing work.
What your role will involve
There are a variety of tasks that you can get involved with in the shop, including:
- Welcoming and assisting customers, providing great customer service and a fantastic shopping experience
- Receiving donated goods from members of the public
- Sorting, steaming, tagging and preparing donated goods for sale
- Creating eye catching window and in-shop displays
- Keeping the shop floor well stocked, tidy, clean and organised
- Processing sales and serving on the till
- Promoting Gift Aid and other Sense fundraising initiatives
- Acting as an ambassador for Sense; promoting the shop and Sense in your local community
- Supporting with the recruitment and training of new volunteers
- Following new health, safety and social distancing measures to ensure the safety of everyone

We are looking for someone to deliver our OCN (Open College Network) Accredited training to prison leavers in community settings. OCN training is one of many ways in which Fine Cell Work supports prison leavers to build skills, confidence, and self-belief. OCN is usually delivered to people currently in prison, and prison leavers engaging on the charity’s post-release programme Open the Gate. We are now piloting further outreach work for prison leavers to access this training and the benefits that it brings.
Fine Cell Work are looking for an individual with stitching experience, ideally with experience of teaching others, and who share the charity’s values. Full training with Fine Cell Work, specifically in OCN delivery, will be provided.

The Section Board:
Amnesty International UK Section Board are seeking to add members to its Board who can bring expertise/experience in the below areas:
Co-opted Board Member – they are seeking an established and experienced human resource professional to be co-opted on to the Section Board. Prior Board experience is by no way a pre-requisite or even having come from a charitable or non-profit background. The expectation is that individuals will be values-driven, with an understanding of what it means in practice to be a people first organisation and to deliver on the aim of being at the forefront of progressive employment practice. In addition to serving on the Section Board, ideally, the successful candidate would act as Chair of the People, Culture and Inclusion Sub-Committee. The ability to provide inclusive leadership to a strategic governance body is therefore important.
Casual Vacancy – for the casual vacancy slot, they are seeking a candidate to fill the seat reserved for the 18-23 year-old age group (on day of appointment). No prior experience is required but a demonstrable commitment to human rights would be advantageous.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Ensuring that the Section complies with its Articles of Association, company law and any other relevant legal and regulatory responsibilities.
- Safeguarding the good name and values of the Section and ensuring that the organisation’s culture is consistent with its values.
- Ensuring that AIUK Section maximises the health, growth and human rights impact of the Section’s activism.
- Valuing the contribution that children and young people make to Amnesty International by listening to and respecting their contribution.
- Willingness to join Amnesty International UK Section as an individual member by day of appointment (a constitutional requirement).
Time commitment
The UK Section Board usually meets on a Saturday for six hours in March, May and September and meets together with the Charitable Trust Board for joint training and reflection over two days (Friday and Saturday) in July and December. Additionally, there are typically two joint Board briefings per year on a weekday evening of approximately two-hours duration. Section Board members are usually asked to attend the Annual General Meeting (which typically takes place in June or July).
Board members are likely to be asked to join a sub-committee, which will meet four times per year, usually on a weekday afternoon or early evening.
Aside from meeting attendance and preparation, we would expect Board members and sub-committee member to monitor emails for updates and occasional requests and those with a specialist brief (such as Finance or Human Resources) should be reasonably available to provide advice and support to senior managers with a corresponding brief.

The Campaigns and Impact Sub-Committee (CISC) is a Board Committee of both Amnesty International United Kingdom Section (‘Section’) and Amnesty International UK Section Charitable Trust (‘Trust’).
The purpose of the Campaigns and Impact Sub-Committee is to assist the Section and Trust Boards and staff to improve the effectiveness of its human rights and campaigning work at a strategic level and to improve its ability to evaluate the impact of our campaigns.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- To provide strategic oversight of the overall body of campaigning work
- To provide support and scrutiny on monitoring, evaluation and learning across campaigns,
- To provide strategic support to ongoing campaigning work, through feedback on individual campaigns strategies
Time commitment:
- The term of office for appointed members of the sub-committee shall be two years. No appointee may serve more than three successive terms of office.
- It is expected that the sub-committee shall meet no more than four times, and on no fewer than one occasion during each Governance cycle, unless justified by exceptional circumstances.

Volunteer Shop Assistants carry out a wide range of tasks in their roles. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, keeping our shop floor full and organised or supporting with raffle ticket sales and promoting gift aid.

Amnesty International UK:
Amnesty International UK operates in the UK as two distinct legal entities: Amnesty International UK Section Charitable Trust (‘the Charitable Trust’), and Amnesty International United Kingdom Section (‘the UK Section’). Each entity is governed by its own Board with the two working together and co-operating but remaining independent. Each Board operates and makes decisions based on the long-term interests of their respective entity and within the constraints imposed by applicable UK law, their separate constitutions and the overall rules of the global Amnesty International movement.
The Charitable Trust:
Amnesty International UK Charitable Trust are seeking to add 3 members to its Board.
In making these appointments, the belief is that the ability to operate competently at Board level is more important than established experience. Choosing to operate via consensus decision making as opposed to simply voting and majority rules is crucial to the board culture being cultivated. Professional experience is of less importance than lived experience or grassroots experience. However, should any applicants have competence in the following areas, we would be pleased to hear from them:
- UK fundraising/ Income experience, Experience of philanthropy/ HNWI/ Trusts and Foundations
- Grants Administration (either as a grant maker or recipient)
- Diversity and Inclusion
About the Trustee Role:
Serving as a Trustee of Amnesty International UK Charitable Trust will include ensuring that the Trust successfully pursues its vision and objectives while acting within its constraints and responsibilities. The Trust Board holds fiduciary responsibility for the organisation and safeguards its good name and values. Members of the Trust Board are legally defined as Company Directors and are also accountable as Trustees under charity law. Participation in Amnesty International UK governance is a form of human rights activism.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Safeguarding the good name and values of the Trust and ensuring that the organisation’s culture is consistent with its values.
- Providing leadership, support and oversight so that AIUK delivers its policies and goals in inclusion, diversity, equity, anti-racism and feminist leadership, and demonstrating a commitment to AIUK’s policies in this area.
- To help the Chair by participating in the Chief Executive’s annual objective setting and performance assessment
Time commitment
The Charitable Trust Board usually meets on a Thursday afternoon/early evening for up to four hours in March, May and September. It also meets together with the UK Section Board for joint training and reflection over two days (Friday and Saturday) in July and December. Additionally, there are typically two joint Board briefings per year on a weekday evening of approximately two hours duration.
Board members are likely to be asked to join a sub-committee, which will meet four times per year, usually on a weekday afternoon or early evening.
Aside from meeting attendance and preparation, we would expect Board members and sub-committee member to monitor emails for updates and occasional requests and those with a specialist brief (such as Finance or Human Resources) should be reasonably available to provide advice and support to senior managers with a corresponding brief.
