Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF) is seeking an experienced and visionary Director of Research to lead our research initiatives. The ideal candidate will have experience in infectious diseases, a strong background in biomedical research, international collaboration and a proven track record of managing and leading research projects. This is a key leadership role that will drive our efforts to prevent and cure meningitis and septicaemia through innovative research and collaboration. Initially managing a small team, the Director will lead on growing the team to support the new research strategy launching in 2025.
This role will report directly in to the charities CEO.
Lead responsibilities
- Strategy – development and implementation.
- Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) accredited grant awards and management process including research funding rounds; grant awards; grant management and all aspects of reporting for the research portfolio and impact of projects funded by MRF.
- Recruitment, development and management of MRFs Scientific Advisory Panel and their participation in the grant awards process.
- Externally funded research projects including concept development, partner identification, writing, developing and where necessary producing peer-reviewed academic papers of relevance to MRFs strategy and shorter briefing documents and presentations as required.
- MRF’s in-house research including concept development, writing, developing and produce peer-reviewed academic papers of relevance to MRFs strategy and shorter briefing documents and presentations as required.
- Research environment horizon scanning to appropriately brief internal teams on new developments in the field that are relevant to their work.
- Secretariat of the Global Meningitis Genome Partnership (GMGP).
- Representing MRF as a collaborative patient representative partner on external academic research projects and panels.
- Conferences and Meetings- Working with external experts, on the development and agreement of suitable agenda, speakers and formats for the MRF Scientific Research conference.
- Representing MRF at key research conferences and events, and seek opportunities to present latest in-house research and projects.
- Policy integration. Working with the Head of Health Insights and Policy to ensure latest research evidence is fully integrated into MRFs policy strategy, framework and activities.
- Responding to external consultations that are focused on research and the research environment with relevance to meningitis.
- Represent MRF on relevant sector bodies and working groups; present to high level external stakeholders about our work; represent beneficiaries of our work to various bodies including national and international health bodies; industry; researchers, public health officials and civil society representatives; deputising for CEO as required.
- Media. Support communications teams on research content for media use; represent MRF in the media as required.
- Report quarterly to CEO on performance of the Directorate and prepare papers and presentations as required for committee and full Board meetings.
- Develop and recommend an annual budget and operating plan for the Directorate to the CEO, monitor and report on implementation throughout the year. Liaise with the Director of Finance and Administration to ensure accurate and timely production of management accounts; inputs to development of other departments; and uphold the financial policies and procedures of the charity.
- Being an active member of the senior leadership team, supporting other departments and teams to achieve their goals and helping to communicate progress of the charity with staff and volunteers.
Experience required
- Published researcher or research management in health or scientific environment/field.
- Research grant management and portfolio oversight.
- Presented multiple times at international research conferences.
- Extensive relevant networks in research and academic community.
- Recent experience of being an organisation’s spokesperson on research activities, including to the media.
- Have represented a research unit or equivalent body on inter-organisational working groups of relevance to public health.

The role
A key role in our Research team, the Research Projects Manager will be responsible for developing and managing our research projects and grants programme, in alignment with our new research strategy. As part of this, you will manage our genomics programme of research, which includes an exciting multi-stakeholder, international project, designed to understand barriers and opportunities to use of whole genome sequencing in low- and middle-income countries.
This role reports to the Director of Research.
Responsibilities
Research project management
- Manage our internally driven research projects including scoping, planning, designing, budgeting and reporting on activity to internal and external stakeholders.
- Liaise with research partners and funders on research project development and activity.
- Connect research projects to colleagues working on related activities in Insights and Policy, and Communications and Engagement.
- Brief Fundraising teams on research projects and progress.
Research grants
- Project Manage the launch of grants rounds and co-ordination of peer review procedures, in alignment with the UK Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) requirements.
- Lead on the development and maintenance of all application, peer review and grant management procedures.
- Project Manage administering post award processing, monitoring, reporting and governance of successful grant applications.
Research collaboration
- Support the Director of Research to identify and respond to relevant meningitis research consultations in the UK and internationally.
- Work with Director of Research to identify, monitor and respond to developments in the UK and international research funding environment and help draft grant applications.
- Collaborate with Health Insights and Policy colleagues, to enable research to inform MRF’s policy positions.
Research strategy

An exciting role where you’ll be supporting a range of third-party Challenge Events and participants’ fundraising efforts. The fundraising team is at the core of the charity and works together to maximise opportunities and raise funds from a range of sources.
The Challenge Events programme has continued to strengthen in recent years, with huge demand
seen across third-party running events such as the London Marathon and Great North Run, plus a growing number of runners in international marathons, including Berlin, Chicago and Sydney. The Challenge team’s role is to fill our allocated places in third-party events efficiently; nurture and support our participants to fundraise as much as possible; and ensure they enjoy the whole event experience from place allocation, through to their training and fundraising, to crossing the finish line!
Reporting to the Challenge Events Manager, the postholder will provide high quality day-to-day operational and administrational support across the Challenge Event Programme as well as supporting in-person Challenge Events, such as the London Marathon (April) and Great North Run (September).
For you to support these events, you will be required to attend the office in Cheltenham around 1-2 days per week, and more often during busy periods. You will ideally support a minimum of 2 events per year which take place across weekends and require travelling in the UK (22-27th April and 6-8th September 2025). In order to compensate for this, we offer a flexible TOIL policy.

Main Purpose of the Role: Working in the dynamic and successful Development and Engagement team, you will lead on all communications activity supporting our parent, alumni and donor engagement programmes. Hours of Work:

Remuneration:
The salary for this role will be £30,000 per annum.

We are now recruiting for a Lead Coach in Bethnal Green - an outstanding opportunity to work as part of a local church to deliver the Spear Programme.
You’ll be working with the local church to manage the delivery of Resurgo's award-winning Spear Programme. Over the last 20 years, Spear has supported more than 10,000 young people across the UK with the work-ready skills and mindset they need to succeed in employment, no matter the challenges they face. In this role, you’ll be responsible for:
The Lead Coach is primarily responsible for overseeing the training room and group sessions with young people. You will help shape the training environment and will confidently adapt and deliver materials and sessions to work within the group’s development towards work readiness.
Delivery of Spear Programme - Group and 1:1 coaching [60%]
- Preparing and coaching Spear Foundation sessions and 1-1s, ensuring that young people are engaged, retained and work-ready by the end of this initial phase of the programme
- Building relationships with young people on the programme and managing culture, and attitudes in the training room
- Adapting the Spear coaching material according to the needs of the Trainees and managing behaviour effectively
- Handling safeguarding
- Taking a lead on rating the work readiness of the trainees and making sure data is inputted and used correctly on salesforce
- Tracking trainee progress on the dashboards
- Liaising with volunteers for key programme engagement events such as mock interviews and external panels. Leading on briefings and communications with these volunteers
Delivery of Spear Career [20%]
- Delivering weekly Spear Career sessions (including running workshops with past Trainees), maintaining records and reporting on statistics, and creatively developing ongoing relationships with Spear Trainees
Training the Graduate Coach [10%]
- Contributing towards the training and developing of the Graduate Coach by modelling excellent coaching and giving regular feedback
Trainee recruitment [10%]
- Developing relationships with Job Centres and local referral agencies to ensure that the maximum number of Spear Trainees are enrolled on each programme. This involves liaising with referral agencies, active face-to-face recruitment and monitoring recruitment statistics
Continuous professional development
- Continually engaging in professional development, including being part of Resurgo’s wider coaching programmes and possibly supporting on leading internal training such as Grad Coach Training
Active participation in and support for church team and mission
- As the Spear programme is run in partnership with a local church partner, you will establish a strong personal connection with the church to develop the engagement and backing of church members and help build a strong network of supporters for the Spear programme. As part of this you may be asked to speak at church/events and contribute to prayer meetings as per Resurgo’s Christian ethos and the mission of the church

Mellon Educate wishes to recruit a Grant Writer on a part-time OR full-time basis with specific experience and a proven track record of success in educational grant applications in Sub-Saharan Africa from medium and large sized international funders, sovereign donors, corporate and philanthropic foundations and institutional donors.
Role Purpose:
This is a brand-new position that has been created to increase Mellon Educate’s capacity to secure grants on a global scale. The Grant Writer will be responsible for identifying suitable funding opportunities and coordinating, preparing and writing funding applications.

Against Malaria Foundation (AMF) was founded in 2004 and is a charity that fights malaria in a highly effective, accountable and transparent way.
We do this by purchasing and distributing multiple millions of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs) at a time in nationwide universal coverage campaigns. This is the most cost effective way of preventing malaria. AMF receives donations from the public and in the current financial year to date have received over US$125m. AMF is particularly data-focused and monitors and reports on net use and drives and supports innovation to improve the effectiveness of malaria programmes.
AMF is the world’s third largest funder of nets.
AMF has been rated a top charity for all of the last 16 years by independent charity evaluators GiveWell and The Life You Can Save who focus on cost-effectiveness and impact.
We are a team of thirteen highly motivated individuals with different skills and experience. Each person has an important role to play. All team members work remotely with constant communication between them. While the team is small, the impact is big - our net distributions protect millions of people. Our largest programme is in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where we are funding 55 million nets to protect 100 million people for distribution during 2024 to 2026. We have ongoing multi-million net programmes in other countries including Chad, Guinea, Nigeria, Togo, Uganda and Zambia.
Role Description
Our activities and commitments are steadily increasing, and 2025 and 2026 will be particularly busy years of distributions, with over ~100m nets planned for distribution. In light of this, AMF is recruiting a Senior Operations Manager to join the operations team and play an important role in ensuring the success of the net distributions. We are looking for someone who has strong interpersonal and intellectual skills who is able to work collaboratively. The ideal candidate will be comfortable taking on significant responsibility by leading on several of AMF’s programmes.
The role will include involvement in all stages of a distribution campaign (pre-agreement, net procurement, post-agreement, during distribution, and post distribution) across two main areas:
- Work with National Malaria Control Programmes (NMCPs)
- Work with AMF’s independent monitoring partners
Further information
The Senior Operations Manager will lead on several of AMF’s programmes. They will work closely with NMCPs, in country partners, AMF independent monitors, the AMF Operations and Technology teams to ensure the success of AMF distributions.
More specifically, they will manage the distributions through the following stages:
1 - Pre agreement
- Establishing the funding gap
- Establishing the net need, malaria burden, insecticide resistance data
- Working with the Ministry of Health to negotiate and put in place an agreement for the programme
2 - Net procurement
- Working with AMF’s procurement lead to order nets in time for the distribution
3 - Post-agreement
- After signature of the agreement, working with countries to put in place the plans for key elements, in particular: electronic data collection, 5% re-visits, net tracking
- Tender for and select an independent partner for distribution monitoring, and work closely with this partner that will be AMF’s eyes and ears in country

- Track information coming from monitoring partners
- Analyse with the Head of Analytics registration and distribution data and take actions if needed
- Account for all AMF nets
5 - Post distribution
- Tender for and select an independent partner for post distribution monitoring, and work closely with this partner to carry out surveys at 9, 18 and 27 months post-distribution
- Share results with in-country partners and encourage appropriate actions to be taken
Through these stages, it will be important to maintain strong relationships with the key partners, notably the National Malaria Control Programmes, distribution partners and cofounding partners to ensure that distributions are carried out according to the agreements signed between the Ministry of Health and AMF.
These relationships will ensure that solutions can be found constructively to issues that arise during implementation of AMF’s programmes. Aside from the areas above, there will be other work related to AMF Group Operations, dependent on the candidate’s skill set.

The ideal candidate will be motivated to help improve the lives of those affected by the wider impacts of malaria.
Required
- Fluent French and English
- Excellent interpersonal skills to build and maintain strong working relationships
- Strong analytical skills and be able to use Excel confidently
- A self-starter who is highly organised with the ability to work independently and manage working time effectively
- Strong project management skills and comfort handling meetings with senior staff
- Comfort in dealing with and learning about financial matters, willing to examine budgets in detail
- At least four years work experience. The skills and potential of the candidate take priority over prior experience and we welcome applications from a range of backgrounds and experiences.
- An interest in driving down malaria rates through procedure changes and the use of technology
Of interest (but certainly not required)
- Experience working on projects based in Africa or in international development
- Malaria knowledge or background in malaria prevention or other global health campaigns
Other role details
Reporting to: Operations Director
Location: Remote working within Africa/UK/Europe time zones (all the AMF team work remotely), with a preference for UK based. Please note that applications from outside these time zones will not be reviewed.
The cost of any co-working office space will be covered by AMF. For those living outside London, trips to London during the first three months are encouraged to spend time working with the Operations Director and AMF team.
Initial salary: £50,000 to £60,000
Company contributed pension scheme
25 holiday days per year + bank holidays
Candidates are expected to have a fully functioning computer or laptop of at least moderate specifications and reliable internet connectivity.
Travel: travel to Africa will be expected. Trips are planned flexibly in discussion with the team. The number and duration will vary year on year, and range from approximately 4 to 8 weeks per year.

We are looking for a well organised and experienced Finance Officer with a proven track record of delivering to deadlines in a busy and dynamic environment. This is a varied role that will process transactions, perform reconciliations, and help ensure that financial controls and policies are followed across the charity and its trading subsidiaries.
Key duties will include:
• Supporting the Subsidiary Finance Manager in ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of all financial records and the preparation and delivery of the subsidiary statutory reports and external audits within agreed timetables.
• Assisting with the monthly close process of the subsidiary ledgers, preparing recurring monthly journals to deadline.
• Performing reconciliations of the subsidiary ledgers to review non-bank balance sheet and key profit and loss accounts monthly to ensure the accuracy of the monthly management accounts, maintaining appropriate documentation to support the audit.
• Preparing necessary journals to rectify and clear incorrect or irrelevant balances and mis-postings in the subsidiary ledgers
• Monitoring and actioning the subsidiary finance service desk tickets
• Liaising with the group accounting team, treasury team and subsidiary offices to ensure accuracy of information in the subsidiary ledgers and efficiency of processes.
