Independent Living Service Volunteer Roles

Become an Independent Visitor to be matched one to one with a young person in a young offenders institution, in Lichfield . You will visit once a month to provide them a consistent, adult relationship which is independent from the institution and from social services. This is an opportunity for the young person to share their hobbies and interest and to talk about their worries and feelings if they are ready to do so.

We'll provide full training, all your expenses and ongoing support from dedicated staff.

We operate as a Member Firm of EY Global Limited and are grateful to have a five-year funding and Master Services Agreement in place with them which provides the majority of our funding as well as other resource and service provisions. Our Board operates with majority independent Trustees and an independent Chair along with a minimum of four EY colleagues. We also have the role of EY Member who acts as a representative between the two organisations but does not sit on the Board.

What we are looking for

We are recruiting an Independent Trustee to join our diverse Board and help us drive the step-change needed to deliver our ten year ambition, with experience in campaigning and advocacy and the ability to influence key decision makers.

It is essential that the successful Trustee is committed to driving social mobility and making the working world equitable for young people across the UK.

Skills, knowledge & experience

• Expertise in guiding the development of advocacy influencing strategies, providing strategic direction and oversight to ensure alignment with our EYF's goals.
• Understanding and knowledge of strategic campaigning approaches including public mobilisation (online and offline), strategic communications, partnerships, and research/data gathering into overarching organisational strategies.
• Evidence of successful advocacy and campaigning experience which influenced key decision makers.
• Up-to-date understanding of the UK political context and opportunities to influence.
• Experience of carrying out a UK-focussed campaigning role including particular focus on how to achieve the greatest possible influence through Parliamentary processes.
• Demonstrate a track record of upholding a positive culture of inclusion.
• Connect, through lived experience or other, with the young people with whom we work.
• Commitment to prepare for, travel to and attend five Trustee meetings, per year including one Board away day (whilst occasional board meetings can be joined remotely we meet face to face whenever possible).
• Willingness to meet with lead staff online and in person (where possible) in between Board meetings (where relevant) in addition to Board meetings.

We would also welcome applications from those who have experience in:

• Monitoring and impact evaluation for a large charity, higher education body, management fund or similar.

What you will be expected to do

Trustees share the ultimate responsibility of governing the Foundation. As a Trustee, you will be expected to:

• Ensure the Foundation has the right strategy, resources and governance to fulfil its purpose and oversee the management of these responsibly and with care.
• Act in the best interest of the Foundation and our beneficiaries at all times.
• Delegate day-to-day functions and operations of the Foundation to the Leadership Team, Sub-Committees or other such entity, as appropriate.
• Attend four Board meetings per year plus one Board Away Day.
• Comply with our Child Protection Policy in which we require all Trustees to complete an Enhanced DBS (England) / PVG (Scotland) and NSPCC Safeguarding training.
• Comply with internal independence processes (as an EY Member Firm we must ensure independence from any and all EY audit clients and affiliates).

Trustees are often chosen for their previous board experience and long professional careers. However, we are interested in talking to anyone who can demonstrate the ability to think strategically and the integrity to take on this important role with time to give us. Please don’t be discouraged if this isn’t something you’ve done before, or if you don’t meet all elements of the role specification; we will provide mentoring and training to support new Trustees to understand their role. Do you want to make a difference to the lives of local people with mental health conditions? We are looking  a Trustee who can think strategically and complement the existing Board.

Mental Health Resource is a well-established, independent charity based in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. We are passionate about improving mental wellbeing in our community, and aim to do this by enabling people to feel supported and valued, providing opportunities for social connections and by raising awareness of mental health. We deliver high quality and effective services across West Kent providing safe spaces and person-centred mental health support.

We provide comprehensive services with both a focus on short term and long-term mental health support, enabling people to access our projects for as longs as they want or need support. Our beneficiaries have complex and enduring mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, self-harming, psychosis, schizophrenia and bi-polar and, on average, we work with over 900 adults and young people each year.  

About the Trustee roles

You would be working with other trustees who have different skills, knowledge and experience. It's an interesting role in which you can help formulate ideas about how we as an organisation can best address the challenges and opportunities that exist in an increasingly complex and changing environment.

We would love to hear from you if you have a true interest in helping to improve the lives of those with mental health conditions in our community, and especially if you have skills or experience in working in a charity or in finance. No experience of being a trustee is necessary.

You would be expected to attend and participate in six Board meetings per year which are held via Teams/Zoom and last 2-3 hrs. The Board is also supported by two sub-committees: Finance and Risk and Marketing and Fundraising, which meet four times a year, and trustees are encouraged to also be a member of one of the sub-committees.

South West Advocacy Network (SWAN) want to strengthen their Board of Trustees with up to 4 new Trustee appointments. These are voluntary positions and provide opportunity to help SWAN to develop its strategic direction and sustain innovative services to some of the most vulnerable people in our communities, primarily, but not solely, in counties across the South of England.

SWAN began life in Wiltshire and over the past 25 years has expanded into Somerset, Bristol, Dorset, Isle of Wight, West Berkshire and Portsmouth. We deliver high quality, independent advocacy services supporting a diverse range of vulnerable people. We have developed a model of advocacy which ensures everyone, including the most marginalised, have the same rights and opportunities as their fellow citizens. Our services are free at the point of delivery, confidential and non-judgemental.

We work with people from all walks of life and have already supported thousands of the most disadvantaged people to have their voice heard and their choices respected by those that are making decisions about their future.

We are looking for dynamic and empathetic people to become trustees within our organisation, people who have the passion and drive to support SWAN and help us to ensure that the voices around our Board table reflect and understand the communities we work in. The Dementia Wellbeing Service provides practical and emotional support to help older people live independently and safely at home for as long as possible, stay socially engaged, and carry on doing what they love. The service supports Camden residents over the age of 55 in the early or moderate stages of dementia. The coordinator works with the client, their family, or carers to produce a personalised wellbeing plan.

Staff and volunteers for this service are located at our Henderson Court Hub in Hampstead.

What does the role involve?

Volunteers assist the Dementia Services Manager with all administrative aspects of delivering the services including communicating with people referred to the service.

What will you get out of it?

• You'll be making a difference to the lives of older people.
• You'll gain knowledge and insight into issues that impact on older people’s lives.
• You'll have an opportunity to build confidence and skills in engaging with people.
• You'll gain administrative experience such as updating databases, dealing with correspondence and dealing with enquiries.

CARAS Youth ESOL Programme – Monday, Wednesday mornings  

About CARAS: 

Community Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers (CARAS) is a registered charity that has been supporting refugees and asylum-seekers since 2002 empowering them to integrate and engage in the local community. 

Arriving as an asylum seeker/refugee can be a disempowering experience. Difficulties with language, accessing services and overcoming prejudice are ever-present. As an organisation we are committed to work alongside refugees to overcome those challenges, and to help them build their lives. 

We offer group support and targeted support work. We offer a range of activities including: ESOL classes; social and recreational activities such as youth club, drama, trips, and family activities; educational support for young people; and casework and advocacy support.

About Youth ESOL: 

Our award-winning ESOL project offers English language classes to young people at a wide range of levels. This provides vital skills, opportunities and social contact and is crucial for enabling young people to do well at school or college.

About the Role: 

• CARAS is looking for Reading Group Volunteer to support our face-to-face study programme for young people.
• The reading group is in Tooting and is an important element of a study programme for young people aged 14 to 18 who are out of formal education.
• Students will be supported to read at length and complete challenges that are adapted to their ability level.
• The reading group aims to foster independence and a joy of reading among the young people and requires volunteers to learn about the young peoples' interests in order to help them select an appropriate text.
• The ESOL teacher will provide volunteers with tips to support reading and understanding for emerging learners of English, such as phonics and elicitation strategies.
• Volunteers will work with 1-5 students, mostly reading out loud with them or helping them to decode unfamiliar language.
• Please note that ESOL classes do not run during school holidays, and we follow Wandsworth Council term dates. 

Volunteer tasks and responsibilities: 

• Providing learners with one-to-one or small group support within the Reading Group sessions; 

• Helping to set up the classroom and provide learners with classroom resources; 

• Contributing to debriefs to inform the ESOL teacher how each student found the lesson/task and the students’ areas of greatest challenge and success;  

• Attending and contributing to volunteer debriefs after each session; 

• Making use of any community languages you may know to help students during the class; 

• Working collaboratively as a team and helping to shape the project; 

• Supporting people to develop their knowledge and skills, encouraging and inspiring participants to reach their full potential; 

• Assisting participants to recognise and celebrate their achievements; 

• Listening and supporting students to select, read and understand a text; Showing flexibility to the wide range of ability levels in the classroom; 

• Following CARAS’ confidentiality, safeguarding, health & safety, equal opportunities, data management and all other policies as relevant.  

Requirements: 

Essential

• To be 18 years or older; 

• An interest in education and English language teaching;

• Currently resident in the UK; has asylum-seeker or refugee status 

• * Able to provide five years’ worth of addresses, and willing to undergo a DBS check; *DBS and proof of residency is not necessary if you are a CARAS community member who is more recently arrived in the UK.  

• Able to attend volunteer induction training (online) prior to start of role 

• Able to travel to our community centre in Tooting (food and travel expenses can be reimbursed); 

• To be non-judgemental and able to engage with young people from diverse backgrounds; 

• To be reliable and punctual; 

• Good communication skills, especially with people who are new to English; 

• An interest in books and stories, writing and poetry 

• The ability to volunteer on Wednesday during Wandsworth term time for a minimum of four months; 

Desirable: 

• Knowledge of community languages, such as Arabic, Tigrinya, Amharic, Pashto, Dari, Farsi, Kurdish, Somali or Spanish; 

• Experience of reading with young people or learners of English, or teaching ESOL or phonics. 

Through volunteering with us you will: 

• Gain experience of English language teaching; 

• Meet new members of your local community;

• Learn about issues relating to refugees and people seeking asylum;

You do not need experience of working with children and young people, just an interest in their development and welfare. Full training and support are provided.

Here’s a few of the young people we have waiting for a volunteer:

• Amy (12) lives with an older carer, she would like an active Independent Visitor who can do sports with her.
• Brad (13) lives in residential care with other young people, he doesn’t have anyone in his family visit. He would like an Independent Visitor to take him out and have fun, like the other young people.
• Cassie (16) lives with carers in a new town, she doesn’t have any friends in the area yet. She would like an Independent Visitor to help with her confidence and going out in the local area, she loves hot chocolate and cake.
• Danny (11) lives with foster carers and attends a special school. He would like an Independent Visitor to help him be more independent, he likes parks, aeroplanes, and animals.

Relevant Persons Representative (RPR) Volunteers ‘looks out’ for an older or disabled person living in a Residential and Nursing care home, making sure they are getting the right care and support and are being treated fairly. This role provides support for people with a DOLS in place. A DOLS is a deprivation of Liberty Safeguarding meaning the person you support is unable to leave of their own free will. A DOLS is put in place to protect individuals from harm or abuse.

You will decide with your young person what to do, but activities could include going to the cinema, bowling, playing football, going to a restaurant, riding a bike, or walking in a park.  We will match you with a child you share common interests with.

You do not need experience of working with children and young people, just an interest in their development and welfare. Full training and support are provided.

• Amy (12) lives with an older carer, she would like an active Independent Visitor who can do sports with her.
• Brad (13) lives in residential care with other young people, he doesn’t have anyone in his family visit. He would like an Independent Visitor to take him out and have fun, like the other young people.
• Cassie (16) lives with carers in a new town, she doesn’t have any friends in the area yet. She would like an Independent Visitor to help with her confidence and going out in the local area, she loves hot chocolate and cake.
• Danny (11) lives with foster carers and attends a special school. He would like an Independent Visitor to help him be more independent, he likes parks, aeroplanes, and animals.
• Emma (9) lives with her carer in a very busy household, she would like an Independent Visitor to spend some time with her on her own trying different activities together.

The Application

• Volunteering mainly happens at weekends and after school hours as the young people are usually in school during the daytime
• The role requires commitment of at least 24 months with one visit per month; this ensures stability for the Child or Young Person
• Complete the Personal Statement section on the application form as fully as possible; tell us all about you; it forms part of the shortlisting process
