Our friendly Visitor Guides provide accessible information for individual visitors and interpret our collection to provide an all-around excellent visitor experience.

This front of house role is for you if you are interested in historic artefacts, have great interpersonal skills and are a good communicator.

Purpose of Role

Under the direction of the Team of Room Guides and the Volunteer Officer there are several tasks that are carried out:

· To help ensure that visitors to Milton Keynes Museum enjoy an excellent visitor experience by providing good customer service at all times

· To be an ambassador of Milton Keynes Museum by informing visitors about the Museum and the collection

Key elements

After relevant training has been provided:

· Present, instruct and inform visitors and the general public about the Museum and collection

· Operate Museum artefacts and assist and instruct visitors when handling collection items

· Act as first point of contact for enquiries of all nature from visitors

· Ensure the security of the collections and buildings and monitor the functioning of exhibitions, reporting all breakdowns / inactive exhibits

· Keep the Museum clean and tidy

· Ensure the safety of Museum visitors

· Maintain Health and Safety standards and follow the procedure for reporting incidents

· Provide guided tours around the Museum

Brief

Our Granary Tea Room is known for its incredible homemade cakes and is a key element of our visitor’s experience, with volunteers serving the counter and taking food and drinks orders.

This front of house role is for you if you are approachable, hands on, communicative and are happy to use a till and handle cash.

 Purpose of Role

Under the direction of the Catering Team Leader there are several tasks that are carried out:

· To help ensure that visitors to Milton Keynes Museum enjoy an excellent visitor experience by providing good customer service when serving food and drinks in the Tea Room

· To keep the Tea Room and kitchen clean and tidy

Key elements

After relevant training has been provided:

· Providing excellent customer service while taking food and drink orders, serving food and assisting with any customer queries

· Supporting the Catering Team Leader with general maintenance and cleaning of the Tea Room and catering facilities, including pot washing, cleaning of appliances and operating dishwasher machine

· Move stock and stock up displays in the Tea Room

· Clear and clean tables

· Prepare food 

· Handle cash and use a till

What we are looking for:

· Interest in gaining or previous experience in a catering outlet

· Interest in the museum, its historic collections and its ongoing story

· Strong communication skills and confidence in talking to the public

Based in the Reception of the Main Gallery, you will be the first point of contact for visitors to the Gallery, giving a warm welcome, assisting with enquiries and ensuring a high-quality visitor experience. You will also support the day to day running of the Gallery, dealing with administrative duties and supporting the Gallery Shop, sharing product information with visitors and taking sales.  

Tasks and Responsibilities  

• Welcoming and engaging visitors, providing information about the gallery and programmes  

• Responding to telephone, email and face to face enquiries  

• Being a visible presence in the Gallery space, ensuring everyone’s safety and the security of artwork and our retail space 

• Guiding visitors around the gallery and wider site 

• Assisting with sales and shop displays, including cash handling 

• Maintaining a neat and tidy reception and retail area  

• Supporting our retail work, with stocktaking, pricing and other tasks 

• Monitoring visitor numbers and contributing to evaluation initiatives  

• Representing the Gallery and Richmond Arts Service

Training and Support  

We will provide training and an induction which covers all aspects of the role. On-going support and supervision will be provided by staff throughout your time with us. Additionally, there are regular training sessions to supplement and further your initial training, as well as a varied programme of volunteer events and activities to join in, meet people and learn something new! 

Desirable qualities and experience  

• Enthusiasm for meeting and engaging with people and sharing information 

• Interest for contemporary art, local history and/or heritage

Availability  

The gallery is open to the public Tuesday to Sunday, 10am – 5pm, with two volunteer shifts a day, 10am – 1pm and 1pm – 5pm.   

We ask for a minimum commitment of one shift every fortnight, although there is flexibility over scheduling.   

Location  

This role is based at Orleans House Gallery in the Main Gallery building.

Expenses  

We will cover travel expenses up to £14 per day.

Richmond Arts Service is based at Orleans House Gallery on the Riverside in Twickenham, promoting arts and culture through a programme of contemporary art exhibitions, festivals, events and activities for everyone in the community.

We bring thought-provoking art to the Borough and cultivate a network of individuals, organisations and programmes that nourishes the arts, local organisations and communities.

Home to the Richmond Borough Art Collection, comprising of over 4,400 artworks, at a site with a rich 300+ year history, Orleans House Gallery works with local, national and international artists and community partners to engage with the community, as we have done since 1972.   

Our House Experience Volunteers add the sparkle to any visit – giving everyone a warm welcome, bringing stories from Ickworth to life and helping people get the best out of their day.

• Being an ambassador for the whole property and the National Trust. Helping visitors understand the full scope of the offer at Ickworth beyond the house.
• Learning more about Ickworth, so you can share your knowledge and stories of the family and their collections with visitors.
• Responding to the changing needs of Ickworth – supporting ongoing interpretation strategies in the House.
• Supporting with health and safety and evacuation procedures if required.

This back of house role is for you if you are computer literate, organised and communicative.

Purpose of Role

Under the direction of the Volunteer Officer there are several tasks that are carried out:

· Help to keep the office organised and running smoothly

· Assist in daily office tasks (i.e. filing, handling and managing data)

· Help out in other working areas, such as marketing, events and fundraising

Key elements

After relevant training has been provided:

· Working with other administrative staff

· Making and receiving phone calls

· Data entry, filing, typing and general office duties

· There may be occasions where you have the opportunity to get involved in other areas, including attending events or other activities

· To liaise with other departments/volunteers as and when necessary and provide additional admin support where appropriate

· Where applicable assist with the handling of both incoming/outgoing mail

Brief

As well as keeping the Victorian Kitchen garden at its best, our dedicated Gardening Team have the wartime garden, a rockery and a nature trail to look after and develop.

This back of house role is for you if you want to be close to nature, don’t mind working outdoors and have an interest in gardening or horticulture.

Purpose of Role

Under the direction of the Garden Team Leader, there are several tasks that are carried out:

· Creating and maintaining gardens for Museum visitors to enjoy

· Maintaining and improving the Museum’s nature trail

Key elements

After relevant training has been provided:

· Maintain and improve the Museum’s gardens and grounds, keeping them clean and tidy

· Assist with watering, weeding and planting as needed

· Harvest produce from gardens for use in shop and catering 

Your profile

Bigger Than Us Residency is seeking dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers to join our team in multiple roles!

Volunteer Opportunities:

• Social Media Management: Work alongside the founder to develop and implement a social media strategy to expand the reach of the charity. (Potential to transition into a paid role once funding is secured.)

• Website Development: Lead the development and enhancement of our website, making it a powerful tool for the residency.

• Partnerships Lead: Play a key role in building relationships with funders, corporate sponsors, and nonprofit mentors. This position is crucial in securing sponsorships, in-kind donations, and guest speakers to support the residency. (Potential to transition into a paid role once funding is secured.)

Additionally, we welcome volunteers interested in attending and assisting with the residency’s launch in Winter 2025. This will be an international opportunity, and we may be able to provide partial or full funding for travel based on volunteer time and role.

We rely on our maintenance team to build and create displays, and to maintain, restore and repair our collection. This back of house role is for you if you are a hands-on team player, have some experience or interest in a craft/trade and are physically fit.

Under the direction of the Maintenance Team Leader, there are several tasks that are carried out:

· General maintenance tasks to restore, repair and maintain Milton Keynes Museum buildings, machines and exhibits

· General DIY and maintenance tasks, including painting and decorating

· Create, repair and maintain buildings and displays in the museum, including emergency repairs

As a member of the Board of Governors at the University of Plymouth, you will leverage your experience and expertise to provide challenge, scrutiny, and support, ensuring the success, growth, and achievement of the University’s strategic priorities.

• Creative and cultural industries.
• Health and social care.
• Sectors that are identified by The Great South West partnership as regional priorities (Defence; Blue economy; and Agriculture/fisheries/food).
