About us

Who we are

Passionate about preserving history and engaging with the community,  voluteers at Milton Keynes Museum assist with exhibits, visitor interactions, and special events. The role involves welcoming guests, sharing historical insights, and contributing to the museum’s educational programs.

Our volunteers take pride in helping to bring local history to life, ensuring visitors of all ages have an enjoyable and informative experience. Whether supporting hands-on activities, maintaining displays, or guiding tours, they are committed to making history accessible and engaging for everyone.

Our culture and values

In 2021, with support from Milton Keynes Council and following the unprecedented effects of the global pandemic, the Trust refreshed its Vision, Mission and Values:

Vision: The Milton Keynes Museum Trust aims to build a welcoming and inspirational museum that plays an active role in the lives of all the people of Milton Keynes, now and in the future.

Mission:  To inspire and encourage people from diverse backgrounds to learn about and enjoy the heritage of Milton Keynes and to foster pride in the community by engaging people actively with the Museum’s collections, buildings and grounds.

1.                The Museum is committed to equal opportunities for all.  It recognises the benefits of a diverse workforce and is committed to being an equal opportunities employer for a) salaried staff and b) volunteer staff.

2.                The Museum will carry out its aims and objectives in ways that seek to ensure that the service it offers is accessible and relevant to all members of the community, including both actual and potential visitors.  It will work to ensure a fair and balanced approach in its exhibitions as a whole and in individual displays and their interpretation.

3.                The Museum recognises that some groups and individuals within our society are discriminated against unfairly and unjustly and will oppose all such discrimination, taking positive action where possible.

4.                Any acts of discrimination, either intentional or unintentional, individual or institutional, should be recorded and brought to the attention of the Museum Director and, if necessary, the Board of Trustees.  They are committed to taking action to remedy the situation and taking steps to ensure that there is no repetition of the act.

5.                The implementation of the Equal Opportunities Policy is the responsibility of all those within the Museum, including the volunteers, paid staff and Trustees.  Those in managerial and supervisory roles have a special responsibility to set an example and to maintain standards.

6.                The Museum will draw the attention of all those that work within its organisation to this policy, to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and to specific examples of groups that are disadvantaged or discriminated against within our society.  It will promote a culture of equal opportunities and offer discussion and information towards this end.

7.                The Museum will keep the Equal Opportunities Policy under review.  Its development programme will take into account the policy, data gained from its implementation with the Museum and information from other agencies committed to equal opportunities within the wider society.
