Have you ever wondered how the changes in our environment might be linked to the extreme weather events that we’ve seen globally in the recent years? Or if there is life outside of planet Earth?
The University of Oxford’s Department of Physics has been investigating these questions, among many others, to find and develop solutions to better our understanding of how our universe works, unlocking new ways of seeing and doing things.
You could be helping to deliver philanthropic support that helps to fund breakthroughs in this research and exploration, that will have a positive impact on the world we live in and beyond. If this sounds like the kind of challenge you’ve been looking for, please read on.
The opportunity
Oxford Physics is one of the top five Physics departments in the world. Our academics observe the wonders of the Universe from the very big to the very small: from seeking planets with the potential for life outside the solar system, to undertaking some of the most delicate experiments in quantum physics. Physics has applications in so many fields, including biology and nanotechnology, to find new ways to treat cancer; the development of new materials to generate green energy; and the understanding of climate science, with its impact on the Earth. The Physics Department is active in developing these applications in part through a strong innovation culture that has created nine new companies since 2018, with several more in the pipeline.
Philanthropy has played a key role in enabling the ambitions of the Department and wider University, and we are seeking a talented fundraiser who is excited by the opportunity to raise money to support ground-breaking research that tackles the world’s hardest challenges; to enable students from around the world and from every background to come and study at Oxford; and to help promote the public understanding of Physics. This could be your opportunity to help the brightest students, academics and researchers develop interventions and solutions that protect and improve our lives on this planet and beyond.
Working closely with the Head of Physics, as well as some of the most inspiring scientists in the world, you will forge relationships with existing and new donors to the department. You will have the support of excellent colleagues across the sciences at Oxford as well as the wider Development & Alumni Engagement office.
About you
You are an experienced philanthropic fundraiser with a strong track record of securing major gifts, a confident approach and the ability to think creatively. Your ability to build rapport and relationships swiftly will enable you to lead on major gift fundraising (£100k-£1m+), working with a range of donors (corporates, trusts and individuals). The department has a well-established alumni programme and a very active and supportive development board that you will work closely with. You will therefore need to bring:
- curiosity about the world around you;
- a collaborative approach and an entrepreneurial spirit;
- the ability to work in the detail without losing sight of the bigger picture; and
- high levels of EQ and solid interpersonal skills that enable you to engage with people from all walks of life.
While an interest in science is essential, you do not need to be a Physics or sciences graduate. We are looking for an enthusiast for knowledge.
In return
Your happiness and wellbeing at work matters to us, so we offer a range of family friendly and financial benefits including:
· Flexible hybrid working
· An excellent contributory pension scheme
· 38 days annual leave
· Membership to CASE
· Training and development opportunities

RIVET is a new social enterprise bringing together brands, influencers, and NGOs to fund and amplify youth-led social change. With 100+ years of experience elevating young changemakers, RIVET’s founders have seen firsthand that young people don’t lack talent or imagination; they lack access to resources.
In response, we have created the world’s first micro-finance platform focused on young social innovators, funded by youth themselves. This engine will transform young people’s everyday purchases into philanthropic power for their generation’s ideas to change the world. Created by, for, and with young people, RIVET represents the largest investment in youth-led social change. Ever.
As RIVET’s inaugural Director of Donor Engagement, you will help build and then lead the stewardship implementation for our 70+ major donors who serve on our Leadership Council, Youth Impact Council, and Youth Impact Fund, providing them with a meaningful experience that reflects our shared values and desired impact. RIVET’s operating budget is $2.5M, with most of that currently coming from philanthropic support. Our four-year sustainable business model strategy reflects an increasing reliance on brand revenue. The Director of Donor Engagement plays a critical role in helping us secure the capacity building funds needed to help the RIVET rocket get into orbit in the meantime. Your success is largely defined by donors renewing and deepening their support, and increasingly serving as an engine for RIVET’s expanded global impact.

Reporting to the Head of Supporter Engagement, the Supporter Journeys Manager is responsible for both managing our Dynamics 365 marketing platform (both processes and data) and working across all FundComm teams to create and support delivery of a cohesive automated Supporter Journeys Strategy.
Having recently moved to a new CRM Dynamics 365, which also includes a new email and SMS marketing platform, we now have access to improved functionality for automated Journeys. The Supporter Journey Manager is a new role to support our ambitious FundComm goals around growth, income and engagement, fully utilising the potential of the new platform, as well as overseeing the testing program on all our website and online conversion forms.
Though primarily a digital focused role, the overall objective of the role is to ensure all journeys are designed to best meet FundComm overall goals while providing an optimal supporter experience. This will be done through creation of a Journey Strategy and plan for audience-led journeys across all channels, asks and platforms. As well as being responsible for design and delivery of some of the key journeys, it also involves an advisory and governance role for all FundComm automated journeys and online forms, ensuring they’re designed to maximise engagements, income and conversions along each stage in Brooke’s Engagement funnel
Criteria
The role requires working collaboratively across FundComm using Brooke’s project management principles, with line management of the Supporter Engagement & Experience Officer and Senior Journeys Officer who manages the online landing page and forms testing program. The role ensures all existing and future journeys are mapped and documented, and creating a cross-team process to test, share learning and optimise them on an ongoing basis.
We’re looking for someone who is organised and will enjoy coordinating workshops and ideas generation to recommend plans for which new journeys should be built, inspiring teams with training on best practice in journey design and copywriting. The role would suit someone target driven, with strong experience of coordinating cross team projects, while motivated to deliver high quality service.
As a key part of the role is creating, communicating and maintaining new processes, as well as governance of all source code structures and data marketing lists and journey entry rules, you’ll need to be very confident working with large data sets. Experience of designing and building automated email journeys in a similar platform and online donation page testing is essential.
At Brooke, we celebrate diversity and the creative new ideas it brings. We actively encourage applications from all backgrounds, in particular global majority candidates, candidates from a social mobility background, disabled and neuro-diverse candidates, and candidates under 25 as these groups are currently under-represented at Brooke.
We are aware that studies have shown that women and global majority candidates are less likely to apply for a role if they feel they do not meet the full criteria of the job description. If you feel you meet the majority of the criteria, we would love to hear from you.
We offer a variety of flexible working options to best support our staff and to ensure our working practices are as inclusive as possible.
Closing date: 19th January 2025 (this role may close early depending on the response)
