St Barnabas House, Martlets and Chestnut Tree House are seeking a Community Engagement Assistant to join the Community Engagement team.  This newly created role will provide vital support to our Events Fundraisers and Community Fundraisers enabling them to go above and beyond for our incredible supporters who go out of their way to raise crucial funds for adult and children’s hospice care in Sussex and beyond.

This role offers flexibility in location, with hybrid working and offices in both Brighton and Worthing.  There will be some travel required between sites.  Whilst this role is advertised at 37.5 hours per week, part-time hours (minimum 4 days a week) will be considered.

• Taking the lead to develop relationships with existing and new prospects with a view to growing the charity’s income

Without donations, Little Hearts Matter would not be able to offer our services, free of charge, to support individuals and families across the UK. We do not receive any government funding for our work. Our fundraising team is essential to raising these vital funds—over £440,000 annually. About Little Hearts Matter

Little Hearts Matter (LHM) is a national charity with over 7000 members. We are the only charity in the UK that offers support and information to, and represents the needs of, children and families following a diagnosis of single ventricle heart disease (half a working heart). These congenital cardiac conditions can never be cured, even following repeated surgery, so the children must learn to live within the restrictions that their disability and fears for their future create.

Little Hearts Matter is there from the time parents learn of their child’s condition, through risk-filled treatment into a challenged-filled life at home. LHM is there to support the children, and their families, through their hopes and aspirations and the gradual realisation that they will never have the same life as their peers. Our aims are to:

Alleviate isolation by offering support, friendship and understanding from the time a diagnosis is made, through treatment decisions, hospital care and into life at home, eventually introducing parents and patients to other families who have similar experiences and shared concerns helping them to build a network of support.

Reduce fear by offering patients, parents, siblings, and the extended family a greater opportunity to understand the diagnosis and treatment paths available.

Reduce confusion and a lack of understanding by producing and supplying for free, user focused information that supports and aids understanding from the time of diagnosis, through treatments and into life at home.

Raise a greater awareness within Medical, Educational, Social and Governmental circles of the needs of children, and their families, as they travel through every stage of their lives.

Specific areas of responsibility

Working as part of the fundraising team, the Fundraising Manager will:  

• Be responsible for their own portfolio of supporters, maintaining and growing income, regularly forecasting income and expenditure against agreed targets (circa. £200,000+ annually)

You’ll be helping to launch and shape an innovative Health and Wellbeing Coaching & Social Prescribing Service based at St Georges Hospital within the Red Cell Pain Management & Psychology department and you will be employed by Merton Connected - Merton Social Prescribing. In this role, you will be at the heart of a life-changing initiative, working with patients affected by sickle cell disease and thalassemia. You’ll be helping them connect to vital community services, manage their health, and reduce isolation.

About the Role:

As a Health & Wellbeing Coach and Social Prescriber, you will:

• Use your coaching skills to support patients in developing self-management strategies, improving their health, and achieving personal goals.
• Help reduce clinical workload by linking patients with local non-clinical services such as social activities, education, housing, employment support, and more.
• Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams and local agencies to build a robust referral network, ensuring patients have access to comprehensive support.
• Play a vital role in promoting the benefits of social prescribing and coaching to both clinical staff and patients, fostering a personalised care approach.

You’ll be joining a team committed to making lasting improvements in health outcomes, helping patients regain control of their lives, and offering support that goes beyond traditional medical treatment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Engage with individuals living with long-term health conditions and connect them with community-based services that address their holistic needs.
• Offer one-on-one coaching sessions, helping patients identify goals and build self-confidence in managing their health and wellbeing.
• Collaborate with local voluntary, social care, and health services to ensure a seamless patient experience.
• Promote awareness of the social determinants of health, such as housing, employment, and social isolation, and help patients overcome these barriers.
• Maintain accurate records of interactions and service delivery to contribute to evaluation and reporting.

What We’re Looking For:

We’re seeking someone with:

• 2+ years of experience in health coaching, motivational interviewing, counselling or a similar framework that supports individuals in making health, lifestyle and other changes.
• A strong understanding of personalised care, person-centred approaches, and the ability to support self-management.
• Proven experience working in multi-disciplinary teams across health, social care, and community settings.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to build trust with a diverse range of people.
• A proactive and self-motivated approach, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

• 1 year fixed term contract (with extension for another 11 months for the second part of the pilot; if the pilot is successful it might be funded for longer)

The role 

Are you a fundraiser with strong communication skills who enjoys building meaningful and rewarding relationships with mid and high value donors? If so, we have an opportunity to join our Philanthropy and Partnerships team in the newly created role of Philanthropy Officer.

In this role you will support the Philanthropy Manager and Head of Philanthropy and Partnerships in securing new four and five figure multi-year gifts from individuals. Your responsibilities will include day-to-day management and implementation of the mid-value giving strategy, verbal and written presentation of donor funding proposals, prospect research, and account management of your own High Net Worth individual supporters. Much of this role will be involved in the planning, project management and delivery of special major donor events to achieve defined strategic objectives.

About you

You will be an excellent communicator, both orally and written, who is confident in speaking with supporters. You will manage your own pipeline of donors, so will need to take initiative, prioritise and organise your own work, with limited supervision. You may have had experience organising and hosting special events for stewardship and cultivation, but this is not essential. 

You will have:

- Excellent customer service skills with a background in major donor, relationship fundraising, direct marketing or a similar role working with High-Net-Worth Individuals. 
- Proficiency in verbal and written communication skills with an ability to present ideas creatively and persuasively.
- Confidence soliciting and securing four and five figure gifts from prospective donors, both verbally and in writing. 
- Be comfortable managing a pipeline of supporters and presenting strategic planning recommendations based on data and analysis.
- A high standard of administrations skills with strong attention to detail.
- Competency with all standard Microsoft office applications, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Experience of using a supporter database or CRM

We put our patients, families and all who benefit from our services at the heart of what we do and strive to build lasting, value-driven relationships with our supporters. We do this by delivering a portfolio of engaging donation and fundraising opportunities.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the team as an Individual Giving Manager, a new role which will grow our income from Individual Giving (including donations, appeals, regular giving, gift aid, in-memory giving and legacies/gifts in wills), across a range of in-person, print and digital channels and campaigns.

The successful candidate will lead and develop the individual giving and legacy team to deliver on specific income targets through a range of activities and develop our Gifts in Wills and In Memory giving opportunities as well as our Mid-and High Level Giving Programmes.

They will also work with the Supporter Care Manager to deliver exceptional supporter care, ensuring that our donors and supporters feel valued and engaged.

Candidates will have previous experiences of working in a fundraising or sales and marketing environment and a proven track record of preparing successful campaigns and programmes of activity.
