The Vacancy

The Programme Development Manager is committed to supporting colleagues and partners in programme design and development. The team also connects programmatic issues and global policy and advocacy to ensure they are complementary and conducive to external change based on evidence from the ground.

Saferworld’s income is secured primarily from statutory and institutional donors; however, securing funding to support our partners in conflict-affected countries and allow for more flexible programming increasingly requires a more diverse funding base. The Programme Development Manager will support efforts to identify and secure funds from statutory donors, trusts and foundations, and other non-traditional funding mechanisms.

The Programme Development Manager will support a portfolio of Saferworld’s teams in designing and mobilising funding for peace, security and justice programmes. The successful applicant will have a focus of approximately 4 countries, which will be decided based on the candidate’s experience and preference. Working closely with Country Managers/Directors, and programme and grant management colleagues, the post-holder will lead on: coordinating and facilitating programme development processes (including taking the lead in drafting high quality concept notes and proposals, theories of change, logical models, risk matrixes and budgets); developing and supporting the implementation of long-term country funding strategies and donor engagement strategies; and supporting new donor engagement and sustaining relationships with current donors. The post-holder will be responsible for growing institutional funding portfolios in our programmes.

The post-holder will have a successful track record in developing programmes and leading new business development efforts with institutional donors such as the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), United States Government (USG)/United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the European Union (EU), UN agencies and European Governments such as Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). Additional experience in mobilising resource from trusts and foundations and other non-traditional funding mechanisms is desirable.

They will have proven skills and experience in programme management and support, successful programme design processes and bid leadership.

At the Bureau, our funders and supporters are vital. We are almost entirely funded through grants and donations so – put simply – without their support, we wouldn’t be here.

Although our supporters may come from different backgrounds or have varied priorities, they all share a common goal: tackling the issues across our society that are eroding democracy and driving inequality. They support our work to hold those in power accountable, uncover new evidence to support positive change, and empower citizens.

The Bureau has experienced significant growth over the past three years, increasing our annual income to £2.8m and expanding to a team of more than 40 people. While the majority of our income comes from grants, there is strong potential for further fundraising growth, and we are actively working to diversify our funding streams beyond trusts and foundations.

This is an exciting time to join the Bureau as we continue to build on our strong relationships with existing supporters while exploring new funding opportunities.

Role and Responsibilities:

Support from trusts and foundations is our main source of philanthropic income so we are looking for somebody with experience in grants fundraising who can quickly apply their skills and expertise. You’ll work closely with our Development Director to report to and liaise with current funders, manage a pipeline of prospects and submit successful applications to secure new grants. You’ll also work closely with our other Fundraising Manager, who manages a pipeline focused on our environment, global health, and big tech work, and may be asked to work on these areas from time to time. In addition, you will support in building a major donor programme to diversify and strengthen our funding base. You will collaborate with colleagues at all levels across the organisation, from impact producers to reporters to finance and operations, in a supportive and welcoming culture that values teamwork and shared success.

As an excellent communicator, you will be able to take complex issues and translate them into clear, compelling narratives that resonate with funders and stakeholders. You will also be passionate about building strong relationships with our funders and supporters.

While experience in high net worth fundraising would be a valuable bonus, it is not essential. You don’t need to have raised funds for non-profit media before, but you do need to be excited by our work and able to express the Bureau’s key areas of work and impact in an accessible, accurate and compelling way. We’re a small team, so you’ll need the willingness to pitch in on fundraising tasks – big or small – to ensure the Bureau is in the best possible position to pursue its mission.

We envisage this as a full-time, primarily hybrid working role, working from our London office two/three times a week.

Skills and Experience

• Excellent fundraiser with a demonstrable track record of 3+ years’ experience successfully raising significant funds for charities or non-profits and managing relationships with funders (foundations - essential, high net worth individuals - desirable);
• Strong background in managing grants admin, including due diligence and processing agreements;
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, able to speak and write English fluently;
• Great analytical skills, with experience of researching and identifying new funding sources for various projects;
• Ability to work to tight deadlines and manage multiple priorities;
• Experience of working with databases and funding pipelines;
• Exceptional time management skills, a professional attitude and meticulous attention to detail;
• Resourceful and able to think creatively with strong problem solving skills;
• Strong interpersonal skills, able to collaborate at all levels across the organisation.
• Experience in securing funds for journalism, social justice, civil society, human rights or related causes, particularly from UK funders, is desirable but not essential;

The role

Your Role: Senior Grants Manager 

We are looking for a motivated person to join our grant team for six months to support us in our efforts to harness opportunities for small charities in the UK through funding, learning and development opportunities, awareness-raising activities and in-kind donations. This exciting projects-led role will help the team deliver several strategic projects. You will: 

Lead the delivery of a new initiative for Small Charity Week 2025 (23-27th June) - partnering with Big Give and NCVO to deliver an exciting match-funding campaign. Working to a high level of independence, you will utilise your expertise in the grantee selection, running decision-making panels, grant management, and evaluation of grants, as well as help optimise the campaign’s delivery, and impact through charity/beneficiary storytelling. 

Support the Head of Grants and Impact to deliver an engaging and impactful Learning and Development Programme to facilitate collaboration, connection and learning amongst small charities professionals. 

As a member of the Grants Team, contribute to the other key deliverables for the year working together with internal and external stakeholders to innovate and deliver outstanding activities. 

Key Responsibilities 

Grant Selection and Decision-Making: 

• Own the coordinate and participate in the partnership panel(s) to complete the second stage of the grant selection and decision-making process.
• Ensure funding is distributed equitably across geographic regions, cause areas, and underrepresented communities, aligned with the partners’ funding priorities. 

Grantee Relationship Management: 

• Act as point person for grantees and address queries efficiently and equitably post funding distribution 

Impact Measurement and Reporting: 

• Contribute to the creation of the evaluation report, capturing key insights and outcomes, including narrative and quantitative data. 

Storytelling and Communications: 

• Identify and source impactful stories from grantees for Small Charity Week marketing and communications campaign activities. 
• Input and advice on strategies to maximise the engagement of grantees in storytelling while respecting their resource constraints. 

Managing Learning and Development Opportunities:

• Work collaboratively with partners and GMSN’s internal team to deliver meaningful and engaging learning and development opportunities for GMSN grantees.

Administrative and Financial Oversight: 

• Ensure all grants are accurately recorded in Salesforce or other systems as required. 
• Coordinate with GMSN’s finance team to oversee timely disbursement of funding payments and reimbursements to grantees. 
• Oversee the scheduling, sign-up, travel and accommodation arrangements for charities attending learning and development opportunities.

• Work with canvassers to create high quality impact reports, particularly for high value trust and statutory funders
• Lead on the creation of new template and bespoke proposal and reporting content for our fundraising priorities
• Lead on work with staff across the charity to ensure that funded projects are monitored and evaluated in order to create reports which demonstrate the impact of the funders support
• Liaise with colleagues in research, community, external relations and finance to gather project information on funded projects to ensure grant conditions are continually met
• Lead on the review of any existing processes and creation of new collaborative approaches to trusts and statutory requirements, utilising best practice and technology solutions where appropriate.

• Ability to work effectively with a range of internal and external people, and experience influencing stakeholders. 
• Demonstrable expertise in the technical requirements of and current UK environment for trusts and statutory fundraising, in particular lottery distributors, central and devolved governments.

Mellon Educate wishes to recruit a Grant Writer on a part-time OR full-time basis with specific experience and a proven track record of success in educational grant applications in Sub-Saharan Africa from medium and large sized international funders, sovereign donors, corporate and philanthropic foundations and institutional donors.

Role Purpose:

This is a brand-new position that has been created to increase Mellon Educate’s capacity to secure grants on a global scale. The Grant Writer will be responsible for identifying suitable funding opportunities and coordinating, preparing and writing funding applications.

The successful candidate will work with colleagues to develop and implement Mellon Educate’s strategic approach to funding against agreed key performance indicators. This role requires an enthusiastic self-starter, with good knowledge of educational grant-writing, exceptional persuasive writing and organisational skills and a good knowledge of the South African education system.

Well Grounded runs the UK’s first series of specialty coffee training academies, connecting people looking for work with sustainable careers in the coffee industry. We are looking for a motivated and passionate individual to join our team, as Programme Lead for our Bristol academy and impact. Since 2023 we have been running training programmes from Bristol with 73% of completers going into work. We are looking for someone to build our presence in Bristol as our first permanent team member in Bristol, working closely together with our central team in London. You will be responsible for running our programmes in the area including overseeing recruitment of candidates (‘trainees’) for our programmes, working with local community organisations, coffee employers and potential funders.

As the local lead, you will be responsible for managing the day to day operations of our social impact in the local area, liaising with local employer partners, recruiting learners onto our programmes and ensuring onward employment for Graduates. About the role: 

This London based role will strengthen and optimise the critical programme pillar of strategy, through programmes which are well managed, and that deliver on their expected outcomes, contributing to the organisational goals and delivering for those who work in the tea sector. The programmes will focus on a core set of interventions that in combination will address the causes that we champion – namely, the reduction of poverty, arresting deforestation, promoting access to services and lastly but crucially addressing Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence (HREDD) in the tea supply chain.

Key areas of responsibility include:

• Lead the definition of the overall programme strategy, taking into account input from the field and member companies’ priorities.

• Support the in-country teams with project management and priority management, acting as back up when needed.
