In this exciting role, you will be responsible shaping and delivering Bonsucro´s communications strategy and overseeing the day-to-day management of a small communications function. A crucial part of this role is to ensure that colleagues, the Bonsucro board and external stakeholders are provided with tools and resources to confidently and effectively communicate about the organisation and its mission.

Bonsucro is the global sustainability platform and standard for sugarcane. Our purpose is to collectively accelerate the sustainable production and uses of sugarcane. We work with people and organisations across the sugarcane supply chain, including small scale farmers and some of the world’s biggest brands.

Climate change, human rights, farmer livelihoods, women’s empowerment, pesticide reduction, and water use are some of the issues that Bonsucro works on. As our Communications and Events Manager you will be expected to create narratives on these issues and link this to Bonsucro’s work on standards and certification,  market development and collective action.

We are looking for someone with strong experience in strategy, planning and delivery of communications and events in a comparable organisation. You are versatile and stakeholder-oriented and comfortable working in a busy environment with multiple concurrent priorities, deadlines and activities. Your strength lies in creating compelling content and results-driven campaigns that supports the achievement of higher-level strategic goals. You bring a track record of turning very technical and complex information into compelling content and have some insight into agricultural production systems and/or Bonsucro’s countries of operation outside of the UK.

Key responsibilities

Strategy and delivery

• Develop and execute effective communications strategies to continuously strengthen Bonsucro’s profile, reputation and, as a result, to attract new members and partners
• Develop and manage effective communications tools, channels and partnership with media service providers, to deliver on the agreed communications strategy.
• Develop and implement monitoring processes to assess the effectiveness of Bonsucro’s communications strategies, outputs and channels in order to identify areas for continuous improvement.
• Line manage the Communications and Events Coordinator to ensure delivery against plans, timelines and quality work and personal development and growth
• Develop and tailor to stakeholder needs and interest a series of events to contribute to effective member engagement and strengthen Bonsucro’s profile as a convening actor.  
• Develop and deliver the Annual Operational Plan for the Communications and Events function in line with organisational quality standards, adapting to changing context and needs where relevant.

Messaging and content

• Tailor Bonsucro’s key messages to targeted audiences and communications (e.g. articles, press releases and statements) in various languages as needed to ensure consistency of communications across channels, regions and media.
• Develop compelling sustainability ‘impact’ stories from regions and projects and on specific sustainability issues to promote Bonsucro’s impact.

Branding and stakeholder guidance

• Advise and build the capacity of other functional teams on how to effectively communicate about Bonsucro, making them aware of key messages and channels to use to increase the impact of Bonsucro’s communications.
• Advise internal and external stakeholders on adherence to brand guidelines to ensure consistency and appropriateness of use.
• Coordinate and monitor services delivered by sub-contractors
• Act as a representative of the company, where relevant, with both internal and external stakeholders.

Channels, reports and events

• Maintain and optimise an effective public facing website and social media presence to continuously strengthen Bonsucro’s external profile and community building.
• Oversee logistics, planning and delivery of key Bonsucro’s events, in particular Bonsucro Global Week.
• Continuously improve and evolve Bonsucro’s external reports (e.g. Outcome report, Annual report etc) to ensure clarity of layout and language and strengthen them as tools to increase Bonsucro’s profile and value back to members.
• Regularly report on operational progress updates to the Director of Engagement and Markets and other teams to identify areas of strengths and continuous improvement.
• Identify, track and monitor appropriate KPIs that assess the effectiveness of the communications strategies and plans and which inform decision-making.

Person Specification

Essential criteria

• Significant prior experience in development and implementation of communications strategies and a full range of media        services, ideally in a global context
• Strong technical acumen in relation to all aspects of communications and events delivery
• Previous line-management experience and experience in managing moderate budgets
• Significant experience in writing, editing and publishing compelling content
• Proven ability to translate complex information into engaging campaigns and stories
• Excellent editing and proofreading skills for a range of media (online and print), including the ability to convey complex          ideas clearly and simply.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal, written and visual
• Strong time/process management skills and ability to establish priorities and work to deadlines
• High level of communications IT proficiency, covering a range of tools and applications
• Knowledge of and experience in working professionally with online tools and social media
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team and build strong relationships across the organisation
• Self-motivation and adaptability to thrive in a dynamic environment of a small but growing organisation

 Desirable Criteria

• Previous exposure to sustainable agriculture commodity programmes.
• Fluency in additional languages, especially Spanish and/or Portuguese
• Significant experience in communications and social media activities in a professional environment

This is a fabulous opportunity for a dynamic comms professional who knows how to use communications to drive change. We seek a  climate communications lead  who is keen to bring their skills in campaigns, narrative-shift, media and digital comms to the world of steel decarbonisation. The steel industry is a major driver of climate emissions and yet few in the industry feel urgency and few outside the industry know that. Your job will be to help us change that.

This is an international role in an international climate campaign organisation that challenges steelmakers and the wider industry.  We seek a dynamic communications lead based in the Europe/Africa time zone, who will work closely with Asia-Pacific colleagues, lead delivery in Europe, and coordinate our comms work internationally. 

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION

SteelWatch is an international climate campaign organisation established in June 2023, driving corporate accountability and action in the steel sector. Our vision is a steel industry that underpins a thriving zero emissions economy. Our priority is that the steel industry gets on track for a 1.5 degree trajectory this side of 2030. 

We run corporate campaigns and challenge the global industry to replace complacency with urgent action.  We currently focus heavily in Europe and Japan, with team members in UK/Europe and Asia Pacific timezones. ABOUT THE ROLE

This role will combine three core elements:  (1) ensuring coordination of SteelWatch communications activities, across all our multiple initiatives and timezones, ensuring great content, targeted reach, timeliness, coherence of message and coordinated plans; (2) ongoing and surge delivery of comms products and messages, such as media outreach, social media, thought pieces, particularly in Europe/Africa and sometimes US timezone. This will align with delivery of comms work in Japan/Asia led by colleagues in the region.  (3)  sharpening our communications strategy, our targets, and our ability to deliver our messages to the right people, shaped jointly with our Asia/Pacific based comms strategist.  

The role requires coordination across the small and growing comms team, which is diverse in terms of experience level, region and expertise. It also requires hands-on delivery in your region/timezone and based on your own specialist skills.   Media engagement is currently a gap we need to fill and an ideal candidate will lead and deliver our media work, as well as coordinating our wider comms.  If the successful candidate excels in other strengths but not media, then we - and you - will need to build the team differently in terms of future recruits and consultants.

Responsibilities: 

Coordination of the communication outputs and comms team resources

• Ensure coordination and coherence of the overall SteelWatch editorial and content calendar, with co-management of comms planning, team meetings, and ongoing communications outputs.

• Co-manage comms team resources, including identifying and bringing onboard additional capacity where necessary, to deliver on our fast evolving needs on communications.

Delivery of timely coherent comms outputs

• Design the communication strategy and a range of creative outputs for our corporate campaigns, particularly the ones focused on Europe-based companies, in line with campaign’s theory of change.

• Develop communications materials to shift the dominant narrative of the steel industry which may include data visualisation, rankings, storytelling etc.

• Build and maintain strong relations with journalists in key media and trade media outlets, manage a database of journalists, and ensure regular flows of news/information to establish SteelWatch as a credible voice in steel decarbonisation. 

• Coordinate timely responsive comms outputs in relation to external news and events.

• Coordinate with ally organisations, where relevant, to coordinate, input into, align and amplify their outputs

• Collaborate with our Asia Comms strategist and other communications colleagues to ensure consistent, smooth and cohesive approaches to SteelWatch’s voice across the geographies and outputs.

Development of strategy and capacity

• Working closely with our Asia comms strategist, develop our messaging, tone of voice, and overall approach to comms as a driver of change. 

• Build organisational capacity to articulate and challenge narratives in and around the steel industry and to influence others with our point of view.

• Analyse data and insights and develop segmentation and understanding of audiences needed to achieve our change goals.

• Commission and manage external expert inputs as needed.

• Develop and incorporate ongoing learning into communications strategy

APPLICATION CRITERIA

Essential skills and experiences

• At least 8 years’ experience (and potentially much more) in strategic communications, including journalism, digital media and storytelling;

• Experience in designing and delivering communications for achieving campaign goals;

• Demonstrated ability to pursue narrative change;

• An appetite for change-making, ability to articulate systemic problems, and understanding of how communication contributes to driving transformative change;

• Proven record of developing communications for technical issues. Ability to grasp technological issues sufficiently, and to nuance and ensure credibility of our messages;

• Strong editorial, writing and audience segmentation skills;

• Ability to collaborate effectively with a wide variety of partners, from campaigners to analysts to communication experts;

• Experience working across geographies, languages and cultures;

• An appetite to work in a start-up, with all the curiosity, adaptivity and learning that it entails.

• Availability to work at hours that enable collaboration in other timezones and to travel occasionally. 

Desirable

• Experience in handling media relations and developing pitch; 

• Skilled with media monitoring and analysis for influencing narratives;

• Skilled in creating engaging social media assets;

• Demonstrate high level of editorial and legal standards, ensuring adherence to internal and external requirements and advocate for best practice;

You will join the Development team at an exciting time for the School.  Under new leadership and with pupil numbers at an all-time high, fundraising continues to play a crucial role in securing the future of musical education and helping to develop the next generation of classical musicians.  Our strategy is focused on reaching out to new donors, as well as continuing to engage our loyal body of current supporters, including several engaged grant-making trusts and foundations.

Role

This is a new position. Under the general direction of the Director of Operations, you will be involved in all the duties required to maintain a complete general ledger and financial records and support financial planning/forecasting.

International Accountant Responsibilities

— The responsibilities of the International Accountant will include, but are not limited to:

International Accounting Operations

• Develop a General Ledger Chart of Accounts which supports our current grantmaking operations with the flexibility to accommodate various directions in our growth, allows easy consolidation with sister entities, and is IFRS compliant to allow us to provide regulatory and audit reporting in various jurisdictions.
• Implement optimal Chart of Accounts and processes, evaluating current and alternate accounting systems as needed and developing interface processes to existing systems as needed (HRIS, Payroll, Grants Management System, expense reporting) as needed.
• Perform duties necessary for the timely and accurate verification and recording of financial and investment (MRI/PRI) operations including general ledger, entries and reconciliations, investment portfolio tracking and transactions, international payroll, benefits and taxes.
• Work closely with Human Relations Specialist on payroll and benefits administration processes.
• Collaborate with senior management team, Operations Manager and others to determine an optimal process for reviewing and approving expenses.
• Audit corporate credit card(s).
• Identify institution and global consolidated reporting needs with senior management team and agree schedule and distribution for regular financial reporting.

Budgeting and Financial Planning

• Assist in preparation of the annual organisational and department budgets.
• Monitor and provide quarterly budget performance reports and analysis to organisation and departments with close cooperation to develop and implement measures to minimize variance.
• Assist staff to self-manage budgets.
• Support financial planning and forecasting including developing scenarios for growth.

Cash Flow Management

• Reconcile annual and quarterly projected expenses and cash flow requirements and coordinate with family office for redemption decisions.
• With Operations Manager and Human Relations Specialist, maintain and improve policies and organization discipline for accurate and timely processing of accounts payables, employee expense reports, travel guidelines, time reporting, etc.

Regulatory and Audit Compliance (initially in support of regulatory reporting through the family office)

• Strengthen financial systems integrity and controls according to IFRS, tax and regulatory measures and foundation policies.
• Build systems for timely and accurate provision of data and provide direct support for annual audit and tax filing.
• Work with external advisors, as needed, to ensure compliance with relevant country and international regulatory requirements in areas of taxes, documentation requirements, payroll and benefits.

General and Other

• Develop and manage relationships with accounting-related service providers as needed including in-country and global accountants, auditors, payroll and tax experts.
• Develop and maintain an asset inventory/schedule.
• Support for MRI/PRI activities as needed.
• Continually improve internal financial processes.
• Potential management of banking relationships, international wire transfer and/or other payments systems.
• Occasional travel as required for execution of duties.
• Other duties as are consistent with accountant’s role and experience as the foundation continues to evolve, or from time to time as prompted by institutional priorities.

Qualifications

— The successful International Accountant candidate will likely reflect much of the following profile:

Role and Responsibilities:
Support from trusts and foundations is our main source of philanthropic income so we are looking
for somebody with experience in grants fundraising who can quickly apply their skills and

funders, manage a pipeline of prospects and submit successful applications to secure new grants.
In addition, you will support in building a major donor programme to diversify and strengthen our

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Recruitment team currently consists of ~three FTE and fulfils the two key functions of attracting and selecting top candidates for our Charity Entrepreneurship incubation program  - as well as possible support for other programs AIM runs or may run. As such, there are two 3-4 month sprints each year that are very execution focused for identifying and then selecting top candidates. The recruitment team also carries out broader communications work for AIM, such as by supporting AIM’s Impactful Grantmaking Program, on outreach for staff roles at AIM, and helping our incubated charities with their initial communications.

As Communication and Marketing Manager, you will chiefly be responsible for the attracting function on the team, presenting AIM’s work in a consistently high fidelity, compelling, and engaging manner. • Take up ad hoc asset-focused tasks for other departments, such as copy editing research reports for the research team, capturing footage of the in-person weeks of our programs, and providing initial design support for new charities we incubate

• Co-designing our marketing and communications strategy on the basis of collected data

ABOUT YOU

This role will likely suit early-stage and mid-level communications/marketing generalists or specialists (0-5 years of experience) and could be tweaked significantly in responsibility to suit a senior communications/marketing specialist. At minimum, you should already be able to execute high-quality work across a range of communications tasks, combining some existing skills with an excitement to grow in new areas and contexts which may be less familiar. You will likely consider yourself as a communications-focused generalist to some degree, able to quickly learn and improve at tasks you have little or no previous experience with.

We expect excellent candidates will meet many (but not all) of the criteria below. We encourage you to apply even if you do not meet all of the listed characteristics. The Ideal Candidate is:

• A skilled communicator, both in writing and in-person:

  • Can create powerful, professional, and compelling written content that concisely conveys complex ideas

  • Comes across as confident and persuasive in person when delivering talks at a conference, hosting an online Q&A, or having 1:1 discussions with promising applicants

• Has experience with some (but not necessarily all) of our core communications channels (Wix, Mailchimp, LinkedIn, Google Search Ads; Canva)

• Puts the mission first - being willing to do more menial applicant-driven work during crunch periods of our application cycles

• Has some prior experience with marketing or communications work, bringing practical experience of optimising tools like Google Analytics and Phantombuster, and in executing paid digital advertising campaigns

• Is familiar with and ideally has connections within the evidence-based international development space, farmed animal welfare movement, Effective Altruism movement, and/or other relevant (entrepreneurial, nonprofit, philanthropic) communities

• Is a results-oriented, data-driven decision-maker excited to prioritise ruthlessly and leave less important things undone

• Leans towards quick iteration and testing, being able to learn new skills and processes quickly through doing 

• Is a team player able to both give and receive constructive feedback, while being able to independently progress on important tasks when necessary

Desirable but not necessary:

• Can create compelling digital media through high-quality photography and/or filming

• Experience working in fast-moving and/or startup workplaces

• 1+ years of experience in communications or marketing-focused roles

APPLICATION PROCESS

Our application processes aim to be highly predictive, time-effective, and informative for you. Our process consists only of stages that our best evidence suggests are predictive of success on the job (such as test tasks) rather than more common but less predictive stages (such as cover letters). We only invite candidates to the next stage if we think they have a good chance of passing it, and take care to choose tasks and interview questions that will also give you a good sense of the role and our culture.

Applicants will be asked to complete the following stages:

1. Submitting our general application form (30 minutes to 1 hour),

2. A general test task (2-3 hours) with the top 10 to 30 candidates,

3. An initial interview (15 minutes) with the top 10-20 candidates,

4. A test task simulating the work you would do in your role (2-3 hours) with the top 5-15 candidates,

5. A final, more in-depth interview (~60 minutes) with the final 2-5 candidates.

We will also conduct a reference check before making an offer. Each stage typically takes 1-2 weeks from the end of the application deadline, and we hope to make an offer within ~8 weeks of the application deadline. Ideally, the candidate will begin onboarding as soon as possible after an offer is made. We strongly prefer candidates to join the team by January 2025, but we would consider a different date for an ideal candidate.
