About the role
As Programme Finance Accountant you will provide support to the full life cycle of grants: from donor concept proposals to final reports. You will maintain a close working relationship with all finance and programme teams and relevant staff across their international network and external donors. You will prepare financial information for internal reporting purposes, including the quarterly CEO report, monthly dashboards, and quarterly cash balance reports.
You will oversee the grants management and compliance processes, including maintaining the grants management tracker to ensure they are properly recorded and monitored. You will review budgets for proposals and make recommendations for improvements and liaise with the programme/partnerships team to ensure they are complete, accurate and compliant with donor requirements.
You will also carry out any other duties as assigned by the Programme Finance Manager or the Head of Finance and Operations.
About you:
- Qualified or part-qualified accountant (ACA/ACCA/CIMA or equivalent)
- Experience working within international charities or donor agencies and have a good understanding of grant accounting
- Experience working with EC, ECHO, DFID or equivalent and have familiarity with compliance rules
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to work with a variety of stakeholders
- Experience working within financial accounting and financial reporting in a charitable context

Ivy Rock Partners is supporting a well-established and impactful charity with the recruitment of a Financial Controller to join the team for a 1 year FTC.
As Financial Controller, you will be responsible for managing financial operations, ensuring strong internal controls, and delivering accurate financial reporting in line with charity regulations (SORP, FRS 102). You will play a key role in cash flow management, VAT compliance, payroll oversight, and business partnering with budget holders to ensure financial sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and develop a finance team of 3
- Oversee month-end and year-end financial processes, including balance sheet reconciliations and statutory accounts preparation.
- Ensure compliance with VAT, PAYE, Gift Aid, and Direct Debit regulations, acting as the key contact for financial compliance matters.
- Manage cash flow forecasting and financial stewardship, supporting informed decision-making.
- Liaise with external auditors, ensuring a smooth year-end audit process.
- Develop and improve financial systems and reporting tools to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
- Work closely with budget holders, providing financial insights and business partnering support.
Key Criteria
- Qualified accountant or substantial QBE experience
- Experience in charity finance, including restricted funds, grant management, and financial reporting.
- Excellent knowledge of VAT, payroll, and financial compliance requirements.
- Proficiency in financial systems (Microsoft Dynamics GP, Jet Reports, or similar).
- Advanced Excel skills, with experience in financial modelling and reporting.
- A proactive, problem-solving approach with a commitment to continuous improvement.

Empowering Cost Centre Managers – Support budget holders to develop their financial confidence and capability, enabling them to take greater ownership of their budgets and produce accurate forecasts.
Budget Monitoring & Forecasting – Provide accurate and timely financial information, ensuring budget holders have the right data to make informed decisions.
Financial Reporting & Compliance – Maintain financial controls, ensure adherence to regulations and support the completion of statutory returns.
Process Improvement & Efficiency – Work with Finance Business Partners to streamline financial processes, enhance automation and reduce manual workloads.
Financial Planning & Year-End Processes – Play a key role in budget-setting, in-year monitoring, and financial year-end close, ensuring financial integrity across all processes.
Embedding a Data-Driven Approach – Ensure financial insights are well-structured and accessible, making it easier for managers to interpret financial performance information.
What We’re Looking For:
Essential - Qualified or part-qualified accountant (AAT) or equivalent experience, and evidence of continuing professional development.
Strong Financial & Analytical Skills – Ability to extract, interpret, and communicate complex financial data effectively.
Public Sector Finance Knowledge – Understanding of local government finance frameworks, budget cycles, and financial regulations.
Confidence with Financial Systems – Experience using general ledger and financial software (e.g., Excel, ERP systems) to manage and report financial data.
Collaboration & Problem-Solving – Ability to work alongside Finance Business Partners and budget holders, providing guidance and support as needed.

Reporting to the Head of Finance, you will support the finance team during a busy period incorporating financial year-end and following the implementation of a new finance system. This is a varied role and duties and responsibilities include business partnering with budget-holders; providing support in completing month-end processes and designing management reporting templates. Anticipated duration is 6 months+. Hybrid working: 2 days per week in the office.
