About the Role:

Bigger Than Us Residency seeks dedicated Board Members to provide strategic guidance, fundraising support, and leadership as we launch our pilot program. As a board member, you will help shape the direction of the residency, oversee governance, and support fundraising efforts.

We are a small friendly board of Directors/Trustees running a thriving charity that serves the communities in Exeter and its surrounding areas. We have two part-time paid staff and 8 volunteers.

The charity runs a warehouse and shop that makes a positive social and environmental impact by re-using clean post-industrial waste that would be sent directly to landfill. It’s an Aladdin’s cave of materials offering inspiration for creative and educational projects, and used by a wide range of users. These include individuals and families, creative practitioners, community groups, schools and higher education.

As well as reclaimed materials from businesses and industries, our shop offers second-hand and quality arts and crafts items at affordable prices.

Our charity is entering an exciting new phase, which includes refitting the retail space to make it more user-friendly and provide much needed inventory sorting space.

We meet 6 times a year.

Wokingham Film Society  is a not-for-personal-profit social enterprise formed in 2013, which shows films at the Whitty Theatre in Wokingham, to encourage interest in film as an art form, and to promote the understanding and appreciation of film.

We screen around 18-20 films each year, sometimes in cooperation with  other community organisations; we provide a range of films in consultation with our audiences, including some “relaxed screenings” for people living with dementia. We are a membership organisation (providing discounts for members), with all screenings also open to the public.

We run WFS as a voluntary Board of Directors and have no employees; we also recruit and encourage volunteers to assist with all aspects of the Society’s operations.

As a Community Interest Company (No. 08570515), we are governed by our Directors, including Chair and Treasurer. It’s that latter role we are looking to fill, to find someone interested in WFS who is able to manage and oversee our finances.

With a turnover of ~£8,000 p.a., and totals assets of ~£10,000, we’re not a large organisation.

Our Board of Directors meets approx. quarterly, in Wokingham (RG41 2TD) for about two hours.

You will be expected to be able to dedicate about eight hours per month to the role, sometimes more (at year-end) including preparation for and attendance at Board meetings; many of your duties may be carried out online and by phone/video, as well as face-to-face.

Trustees
Term: Trustees will be appointed for a four year term and can serve consecutive terms.
Remuneration: Currently, the role of Trustee is not accompanied by any financial remuneration, although reasonable expenses may be claimed.
Attendance: We expect Trustees to be able to attend all board meetings, our annual strategic away day and engage with Agenda Alliance in other ways. Board meetings are typically held online, with one meeting held in person per year. There is often the option to join a board meeting from the Agenda office (London E2) if preferred.

A Rewarding Commitment

The role of a Trustee is voluntary but highly rewarding. On average, Trustees contribute around one day per month to the role, attending at least three Board meetings per year and participating in one or more sub-committees focused on key areas such as safeguarding, finance and quality standards. Overall, including ad hoc conversation with Board Members and the executive, we expect the time commitment to be the equivalent of a day a month.

Interviews will include a tour and round-table discussion with a small panel consisting of the Chair of Trustees, CEO, and one other Trustee relevant to the skills we are seeking.

At MS Society all our activities and services are shaped by our MS community – people affected by MS, volunteers, staff and other experts. We aim to raise as much awareness as possible about MS, to ensure that people with MS have the support and information they need.

We've been successful in securing funding from Wales and West Utilities for a 'test and learn' Community Connections project (covering Wales and the South West of England) which will run until March 2026. 

Community Connections aims to: 

• Connect people with, and affected by, MS across Wales and the South West of England (Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Bristol, Gloucestershire, and Wiltshire) with services, activities and resources to enable them to live well with MS.
• Develop links with local service providers which enable people with, and affected by, MS to access support and activities in their local areas, whilst improving connections within the community
• Provide information and guidance on a range of subjects, including advice about finances, cost of living-related information, energy efficiency information, carbon monoxide awareness and the Priority Service Register. 

As part of the project, we’re looking for volunteers to deliver MS Awareness sessions to partner organisations that the project will signpost to (such as Citizens Advice Bureau). MS Awareness volunteers will help us to ensure that these partner organisations are equipped to support people with MS (who will be accessing their activities and services). To help people to understand how people with MS feel.

Here’s an overview of what will be involved - 

• Delivering talks (via Zoom/Teams) to organisations to increase their understanding of MS and its symptoms. 

• Signposting to the relevant MS Society team for further information and practical support, as required.

• Note taking and helping us understand how effective sessions were 

• Attending regular volunteer support groups, where you will debrief and share experiences with other volunteers, as well as receive support from your supervisor.

We will support you to develop the skills you need for this role which will include an induction into all the areas outlined. You will have a chance to discuss your role and any additional needs you may have with us.

Swansea Community Workshops

The Board of Trustees are looking to recruit a knowledgeable and experienced individual for the voluntary role of Treasurer (Board of Trustees). The main activity at Swansea Community Workshops (SCW) is to provide facilities for hobbies, recreation, and leisure time occupation in a socially interactive and practical environment, where there are skills sharing, learning of new skills, and helping community-based projects. As we are a charity, these facilities are for public benefit, specifically targeting socially excluded members of the local community in Swansea.

Role Overview

Title: Treasurer (Voluntary) Reports to: Board of Trustees.

Hours: 6-10 hours per month as minimum. Attendance to monthly sub-committee meetings and bimonthly Board of Trustee meetings is expected.

Role and Responsibilities Overall

• Oversee the financial affairs of the organisation and ensure they are legal, constitutional and within accepted accounting practice.
• Ensure proper records are kept and that effective financial procedures are in place.
• Monitor and report on the financial health of the organisation.
• Oversee the production of necessary financial reports/returns, accounts, and audits.

Specifically 

• Undertake bookkeeping duties and/or oversee the finance volunteer ensuring posting and bookkeeping is kept up-to-date.
• Maintain the petty cash system and regularly process petty cash claims.
• Regularly carry out reconciliations/ oversee regular reconciliations by the Centre Manager.
• Liaise with relevant staff, board members and/or volunteers to ensure the financial viability of the organisation.
• Make fellow board members aware of their financial obligations and take a lead in interpreting financial data to them.
• Regularly report the financial position at Board of Trustees meetings (balance sheet, cash flow, fundraising performance etc) with assistance from the Centre Manager.
• Alongside the Chair and Centre Manager, provide oversight in the production of an annual budget and propose its adoption at the last meeting of the previous financial year.
• Ensure proper records are kept and that effective financial procedures and controls are in place, as laid out in SCW’s Scheme of Delegation and other policies. i.e.:
• Cheque signatories
• Purchasing limits
• Purchasing systems
• Petty cash/ float
• Salary payments
• Pensions
• PAYE and NI payments
• Others as appropriate
• Appraising the financial viability of plans, proposals, and feasibility studies.

Personal Qualities

Education, Experience and Knowledge 

• A Level or equivalent degree required as minimum. 
• Knowledge and experience of current and fundraising finance practice relevant to voluntary and community organisations.

About Roots Academy

At Roots Academy, we’ve built a learning experience that’s changing the lives of the ummah’s future leaders, change-makers and visionaries.

Our vision is enabling university students to live God-centred lives, so we teach structured, engaging and transformative face-to-face foundational Islamic education to over 1,800 students across the UK.

Role Summary

Roots Academy is a non-profit company, established in 2020. The team currently consists of 80 core volunteers across the UK. Roots first began fundraising during Ramadan 2023, raising over £25,000 in one off donations, and £2,200 in monthly commitments. Building on this, Roots is now seeking a Volunteer Fundraising Team Leader, to build the Fundraising function, and help increase donations.

Key tasks

• Work with the Exec team to develop a fundraising strategy
• Identify opportunities for Roots Academy to raise funds – e.g. networking with major donors, events, community fundraising, mosque collections, partnerships, grants, trusts, foundations etc.
• Lead the fundraising team of volunteers to implement the fundraising strategy, and raise funds
• Work with the marketing and finance teams to maintain donor records
• Work with marketing to give feedback to donors on how funds are utilised to deliver Islamic Education

What we’re looking for

• Experience in income generation, fundraising or business development in the non-profit sector
• Knowledge of Islamic values and faith-based giving
• Experience working with the Muslim Community, in the UK
