About us
Who we are
We’re an inclusive organisation that cares about helping young people reach their potential. Every year nearly 43,000 air cadets and 10,000 volunteer staff take part in exciting events at over 1,000 squadrons across the UK.
West Mercian Wing covers most of Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire, the Black Country and overseas in Cyprus. There are over 900 Air Cadets in the Wing, located at one of our 27 Squadrons.
Our culture and values
The RAF Air Cadets is a youth organisation dedicated to fostering leadership, discipline, and personal development through aviation, adventure, and teamwork. Our core beliefs are built on the principles of respect, integrity, service, and excellence, aligning with the values of the Royal Air Force.
We promote an inclusive and supportive environment where cadets, adult volunteers and trustees can develop confidence, skills, and friendships. Our working practices focus on:
- Personal Growth – Providing opportunities for leadership, discipline, and self-improvement.
- Teamwork & Respect – Encouraging cooperation and mutual respect across all ranks and roles.
- Adventure & Challenge – Offering unique experiences, from flying and fieldcraft to STEM activities and international exchanges.
- Service to Others – Engaging in community projects, fundraising, and public service initiatives.
- Excellence & Standards – Maintaining high personal and organisational standards in all activities.
We operate within a structured but youth-focused environment, empowering young people to take responsibility and develop valuable life skills while ensuring they feel supported and valued.
Equality, diversity and inclusion policy
The RAF Air Cadets is committed to fairness, inclusion, and respect, ensuring that all members - cadets, adult volunteers, and trustees - are treated equally and without discrimination.
Our approach includes:
- Zero Tolerance for Discrimination – We actively oppose all forms of discrimination based on age, disability, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, socio-economic background, or any other protected characteristic.
- Inclusive Recruitment & Progression – We ensure equal opportunities for cadets and volunteers, promoting merit-based progression and removing barriers to participation.
- Support for Additional Needs – We make reasonable adjustments to ensure cadets with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) or other requirements can fully participate.
- Safe & Respectful Environment – A culture of mutual respect and dignity is upheld, and any reports of bullying, harassment, or discrimination are taken seriously and addressed appropriately.
Our commitment to diversity and inclusion ensures that the RAF Air Cadets remains an accessible, welcoming, and rewarding organisation for all who wish to take part.
