This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated, dynamic and commercially minded individual to join the Senior Management Team of one of the UK’s leading public art galleries. Working alongside the Director and Board of Trustees, the Director of Finance oversees the strategic, business and financial management of the organisation. The successful candidate will be a qualified Accountant with a proven track record of operating at a senior level and with the ability to offer insight and challenge for future development whilst ensuring the financial sustainability and growth of Whitechapel Gallery.

The Director of Finance is responsible for the efficient and effective leadership and management of the Gallery’s finance, governance and commercial activities. With scrupulously high standards, they will drive the quality and transparency of financial management and reporting, ensuring robust financial controls and the smooth running and management of the Gallery’s finances. A key member of the senior leadership team, the Director of Finance contributes to shaping and implementing the Gallery’s strategic development.

Candidates will be able to demonstrate a proven ability in leadership and financial control within a complex organisation, managing people and limited resources effectively, delivering results, thinking strategically and inspiring and motivating others. They will need to demonstrate a high degree of energy and agility, with the ability to build highly effective, collaborative working relationships at all levels of the organisation. The new Director of Finance will demonstrate a high level of financial and business acumen and strategic insight and will possess strong analytical and project management skills.

With experience at Board level, they must be comfortable with presenting to Boards and with the ability to develop strategy and present business plans.

Previous experience of the gallery and museum sector would be desirable but is not essential, and applications are welcomed from candidates with commercial, charitable and private sector backgrounds. Candidates must be able to demonstrate empathy with the mission and vision of Whitechapel Gallery and act with a high degree of personal integrity in a diverse cultural environment.

Role Overview

Location: We have an office in Kingston Upon Thames, greater London. Flexible and hybrid working is offered to all staff.

As the CEO of Refugee Action Kingston, you'll lead our organisation in supporting refugees and people seeking asylum in south west London to lead fulfilled and independent lives. Your responsibilities will include:  

Strategic leadership  

• Developing and implementing annual plans aligned with our strategy, in collaboration with the Board of Trustees, to achieve desired outcomes.

In this role you’ll be both strategic and hands-on, solely managing the financial controls for Creative Land Trust. You will support the CEO, Executive Team and Board of Trustees through your management of financial processes, reporting and governance.

CLT is based in London but we work remotely most of the time. You will need to be able to get to meetings in London 1-2 occasions per month.

About you

You will need to be experienced in technical charity finance matters – for example, partial exemption VAT, Gift Aid, reserves reporting, primary purpose trading – and be able to present charity numbers clearly to a range of audiences.

You’ll be confident in putting together and assessing cashflows and financial appraisals and communicating your conclusions.

You’ll have great IT skills, especially with Excel, so that you can minimise the time you spend on bookkeeping and administrative tasks.

You will probably have experience of being the sole finance person or the most senior person in a small charity or SME. You will be excited about the thought of a role that involves both detail and strategic oversight.

You probably won’t have experience of every single issue that will come your way in this role but you’ll have a proven ability to research issues that are new to you and use your networks to come up with practical solutions.

Overview

To date, Global Dialogue’s finances has been overseen by an external accountancy firm. Over the last eighteen months, we have been working towards bringing our finance function in house. This role presents an exciting opportunity for an experienced accountant to take the reins and complete the development and roll out of our internal finance function.

The Head of Finance is a new role within the organisation that is both strategic and handson. In the first phase, the postholder will be required to roll up their sleeves and, with the support of Global Dialogue’s Finance Officer, get stuck into the detail of financial administration, including overseeing twice monthly pay runs, monthly and quarterly closes, and other day-to-day financial management tasks. Alongside this, the role will lead on bringing the finance function fully in house, eventually taking on full responsibility for the preparation of management and statutory accounts, cashflow and FX management, and budgeting and forecasting processes. This role will play a key coaching role for the Finance Officer, with a view to eventually delegating all bookkeeping tasks. The postholder will also be responsible for ensuring finance systems are innovative, robust and fit for purpose, and will be a business partner to our hosted programmes, providing advice on compliance and strategic matters.

Interim Finance Director

A small, well-established London-based not for profit membership body is seeking a Finance Manager for a full-time permanent role. The salary is £47,867 - £50,813 per annum, with the organisation usually looking to appoint at the entry level point on the salary scale.

Reporting to a Finance Director and managing a Finance Officer, the role is largely a business-as-usual finance role covering management accounts preparation, managing budgets with department heads, bank reconciliations & transactional finance and leading on all aspects of accounting for 2 very small related charitable entities.

The role offers hybrid working, with an average of 40% of the working week (including Thursdays) required to be onsite at the central London office, with the rest of the time from home.

The role would best suit a candidate experienced at Finance Manager level, with prior experience in a small charity or small membership body.

Duties include: 

• Prepare draft management accounts for the main body and one of the small related charitable entities ensuring that they comply with accounting standards.
• Contribute to the preparation of the annual budget.
• Assist with the audit and lead on the audit for one of the small related charitable entities.
• Present financial management information in a concise and easily understandable format for inclusion in Board reports.
• Prepare reports for budget holders summarising spend in their area.
• Prepare monthly accruals and prepayments and manage all monthly reconciliations.
• Record investment transactions for the main organisation and the 2 related charitable entities.
• Develop financial transaction processing to improve efficiency and facilitate meeting reporting deadlines.
• Record all credit card transactions and produce the annual HMRC calculations for compliance with PAYE Settlement Agreement.
• Work with staff at 1 of the related entities to process sales, purchase and nominal ledger transactions for that organisation, along with supporting with other areas of transactional finance.
• Oversee accounting entries for the second related entity and ensure balance sheet reconciles
• Lead on the implementation of online expenses and credit card systems
• Line manage the work of the Finance Officer.

Candidate requirements:

• Graduate level education and at least a part-qualified accountant (ACA, ACMA or ACCA)
• Sound knowledge of management accounting and budgeting principles and methodology
• Ability to and experience of independently preparing draft accounts to management accounts level
• The ability to present Management Information in a visual and easy to understand way to a variety of stakeholders
• Experience of Sage accounts package, including the interface with Excel, and of CRM systems (desirable not essential)
• Experience of maximising the benefits of technology to present management information
• Knowledge of online expenses and credit card systems
• Good interpersonal skills and ability to work both individually and as part of a team

Summary of the Post

Main Tasks 

• Routine Finance Operations
