Dear Applicant,
The opportunity
We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic Individual Giving and Legacy Marketing Manager to guide and develop our individual giving and legacy programme. We enjoy a solid base of support across one off (cash) donors (c3,000), regular givers (existing base of c4,000), in-memoriam and legacy. We also operate a small lottery.
Having enjoyed good success in recent regular giving acquisition activity, we are looking to capitalise on this and also to build up other areas of our individual giving programme.
Our work in fundraising is designed to maximise the money needed for research to help the one in six of us that has a neurological condition.
Why join us?
We are heading into the final year of our current strategy, 2023-2026. This was developed with growth in mind and there is budget for investment and scope to shape aspects of delivery. Targets are sensible and have been built carefully from the bottom up. We have already enjoyed some good results with notable success in regular giving acquisition. This provides a solid base from which to build.
We have a strong and supportive Board of Trustees who are behind fundraising and fully support the plans. Trustees are open to business cases for further investment providing the rationale is robust.
We are looking for someone who is proactive and a team player with good management skills but who is also a self-starter that is happy to be “hands on”.
If successful in securing this role, you will find yourself in a small but dynamic environment with a flat structure where decisions are taken quickly. The role reports to the Director of Fundraising (currently being covered by a trusted interim with lots of experience).
I use my role as CEO to champion fundraising and ensure that we maintain our current focus on building our pool of individual support and ensure that supporters feel valued and recognised. We are a collaborative team with a positive culture that has a fundraising ethos at its heart. There is scope to test and learn, and to grow in the role. Our interim director is extremely experienced and will provide support and mentoring as required.
This is an exciting, growth opportunity and I look forward to hearing from you.
To apply, please submit your CV and a cover letter of no more than two pages stating why you would like to work for Brain Research UK and why you believe you are well suited to the role. Deadline: 5pm Wednesday 26th March 2025. Interviews will be held w/c 31st March 2025.

About PVRI
PVRI is a small charity with a global reach. Our aim is to reduce the global burden of Pulmonary Vascular Disease (PVD) with a particular focus on Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) - a life-threatening and life-limiting condition that affects millions worldwide.
PH can lead to heart damage and trigger symptoms like breathlessness, chest pain, poor growth, and severe difficulties exercising and carrying out normal daily tasks. Diagnosis and care aren’t readily available in many parts of the world, and even when it is, PH treatment can itself be challenging and life-changing. Although it’s estimated that PH affects 1% of the global population, it isn’t widely recognised or well-understood.
To change that, we bring together a fantastic network of energetic and committed PH doctors, academics, regulators, patients, and industry partners. Together we’re identifying and addressing the key challenges in global PH, educating the global workforce, and encouraging research. In practical terms, we:
- Host international scientific conferences
- Produce an open-access peer reviewed PH journal, Pulmonary Circulation
- Run webinars and e-learning
- Raise awareness of PH and health inequalities, and advocate for better access to diagnosis, care and treatment - nationally and internationally
- Bring our members and networks together in working forums:
- The Innovative Drug Development Initiative (IDDI): eight multidisciplinary workstreams working to solve the challenges in PVD research and speed the development of new treatment
- Specialty Task Forces: groups working to advance understanding and improve practice in specific clinical areas of PH
- Regional Task Forces: working in-country to address the key regional and national challenges in PH
We are a London-based registered charity and limited company, governed by an international Board of Trustees and supported by a new Scientific and Medical Advisory Council.
Our turnover is c. £800k p.a. and our income comes from industry support, membership fees and charitable fundraising.
Our small friendly staff team comprises our CEO Karen, Head of Comms Debs, Marketing Officer Emily, Project Coordinator Sarah and Admin Manager Katie, supported by our freelance Finance Manager Steph. We work a flexible hybrid model, with office space in Work.Life, close to London Bridge and Borough Market.
In terms of our values, we’re open, inclusive and easy to engage with, and we’re
ambitious for ourselves and for the global PVD community.
About the Role

Our ideal candidate will bring energy, enthusiasm, and expertise in managing projects, people and infrastructure.

Are you an experienced fundraiser with a track record of securing and managing large grants? Do you enjoy finding creative and proactive ways to build relationships with new and existing funders? We’re looking for a talented fundraiser to join us. Reporting to the Development Director and working closely with our project leads, this role will be a crucial addition to our mission-driven team. Individuals who are passionate about public interest journalism and its power to drive real-world change are encouraged to apply.
About the Bureau
The Bureau is the UK’s largest independent non-profit investigative journalism organisation. In the last year, our investigations were published in over 100 countries across local, national, international, specialist, TV and digital platforms. Our four global investigative teams work with reporters around the world on priority cross-border issues – environment, health, dirty money and big tech. In addition, our UK-focused Bureau Local team uses an innovative community-led approach to cover issues like insecure work, migrant rights and family courts, amplifying the voices of underrepresented communities. Founded in 2010, we’ve grown from a small group of journalists to a diverse team delivering hard-hitting investigations that have prompted inquiries, sparked legal challenges and informed policy change in the UK and across the world. This role will initially focus on the work of our Bureau Local and Dirty Money teams.
Our fundraising
At the Bureau, our funders and supporters are vital. We are almost entirely funded through grants and donations so – put simply – without their support, we wouldn’t be here.
Although our supporters may come from different backgrounds or have varied priorities, they all share a common goal: tackling the issues across our society that are eroding democracy and driving inequality. They support our work to hold those in power accountable, uncover new evidence to support positive change, and empower citizens.
The Bureau has experienced significant growth over the past three years, increasing our annual income to £2.8m and expanding to a team of more than 40 people. While the majority of our income comes from grants, there is strong potential for further fundraising growth, and we are actively working to diversify our funding streams beyond trusts and foundations.
This is an exciting time to join the Bureau as we continue to build on our strong relationships with existing supporters while exploring new funding opportunities.
Role and Responsibilities:
Support from trusts and foundations is our main source of philanthropic income so we are looking for somebody with experience in grants fundraising who can quickly apply their skills and expertise. You’ll work closely with our Development Director to report to and liaise with current funders, manage a pipeline of prospects and submit successful applications to secure new grants. You’ll also work closely with our other Fundraising Manager, who manages a pipeline focused on our environment, global health, and big tech work, and may be asked to work on these areas from time to time. In addition, you will support in building a major donor programme to diversify and strengthen our funding base. You will collaborate with colleagues at all levels across the organisation, from impact producers to reporters to finance and operations, in a supportive and welcoming culture that values teamwork and shared success.
As an excellent communicator, you will be able to take complex issues and translate them into clear, compelling narratives that resonate with funders and stakeholders. You will also be passionate about building strong relationships with our funders and supporters.
While experience in high net worth fundraising would be a valuable bonus, it is not essential. You don’t need to have raised funds for non-profit media before, but you do need to be excited by our work and able to express the Bureau’s key areas of work and impact in an accessible, accurate and compelling way. We’re a small team, so you’ll need the willingness to pitch in on fundraising tasks – big or small – to ensure the Bureau is in the best possible position to pursue its mission.
We envisage this as a full-time, primarily hybrid working role, working from our London office two/three times a week.
Skills and Experience
• Excellent fundraiser with a demonstrable track record of 3+ years’ experience successfully raising significant funds for charities or non-profits and managing relationships with funders (foundations - essential, high net worth individuals - desirable);

• Exceptional time management skills, a professional attitude and meticulous attention to detail;
• Resourceful and able to think creatively with strong problem solving skills;
