Purpose of job:

The Head of Legal & Assurance will provide expert advice, and hold overall responsibility on all legal, risk, assurance, fraud, safeguarding and compliance matters. The postholder will lead the Legal & Assurance team and work closely with the Executive Leadership and the Board of Comic Relief.

The postholder will report to the Executive Director of Operations and work closely with them and all Directors and function leads across the organisation to ensure that Comic Relief complies with laws and regulations, effectively manages legal and contractual risks and operates in line with the agreed risk appetite set by the Board. Policies and processes will be set to ensure compliance whilst allowing the organisation to flex and adapt to achieve its strategy in a financially sustainable manner.

Key responsibilities:

Legal Counsel

· Provide accurate, relevant, and timely end-to-end legal advice for the organisation, including managing resource (internal & external) to ensure effective, timely delivery of legal services.

· Provide legal input into organisational strategy and ensuring legally effective implementation of agreed strategy.

· Lead on identifying, advising on and mitigating legal risks arising from the charity’s operations to protect the charity’s reputation and assets, in particular around contracts, intellectual property, data protection, marketing and advertising, charity, fundraising and company laws.

· Implement and apply appropriate policies and processes for legal and contractual matters across the organisation to ensure our practices and use of legal resource are risk-based, efficient and effective.

· Employ legal protocols, templates, guidance, training and toolkits for staff as necessary to ensure our practices comply with the law and are efficient and effective.

· Provide legal support to management, the Legal & Assurance team and staff to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

· Ensure the organisation maintains effective record keeping for legal matters including for contract management and data protection compliance.

· Essential stakeholder in organisation’s Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) initiative, oversight and lead on achieving Comic Relief’s net zero target.

Information governance & Compliance

· Oversight and leadership of organisational information governance and data protection, including serving as Data Protection Officer.

· Ensure that our practices and processes relating to compliance with applicable laws, regulations and relevant industry codes are fit for purpose. This includes information governance and data protection; and fundraising requirements.

· Support and, where appropriate, supervise the Risk & Compliance Lead with day-to-day responsibility for compliance in respect of these areas.

Risk and Assurance

· Oversight and management of the internal audit function and internal audit providers.

· Oversight of all compliance, fraud related, safeguarding and regulatory investigations.

· Ensure that our practices and processes around fraud and safeguarding prevention, detection and response are up to date,robust and in line with the organisational risk appetite and funding practice.

· Support the organisation and management to ensure they have a full picture of Comic Relief’s risks and that there are appropriate plans in place to mitigate and manage these risks in such a way as to safely facilitate the objectives of the charity.

· Ensure that safeguarding is at the heart of all our activities, that the Safeguarding Framework is adhered to and good practice embodied by all our staff and partners.

· Contribute at Board, Committees and other meetings, and liaise with regulators, government and other third parties as required.

· Ensure that our practices and processes that underpin compliance with all relevant regulations including data protection laws and fundraising laws are fit-for-purpose.

People management

· Create a strong team with the confidence to embrace change and foster a culture of partnership, consistent delivery and operational excellence.

· Proactively undertake business planning, prioritise activities and ensure clear and realistic objectives based on capacity, expertise and aspirations are set across the Legal & Assurance team.

· Provide balanced, constructive feedback, undertake effective performance management to embed accountability and proactively support the professional development and growth of staff within Legal & Assurance.

· Maintain regular two-way communication and dialogue with direct reports, ensuring information is cascaded and escalated as needed.

· Model an enabling, inclusive and empowering leadership style that builds a values-based culture throughout the charity.

Operational Leadership

· As part of the Operations Leadership Team, provide Comic Relief with visible and responsive operational leadership, ensuring teams are collaborating and co-operating with each other

· Ensure there is quality management information for your area that enables knowledge sharing and proactive decision making.

· ·Build a strong, effective and well-led enabling department, with the necessary capability, expertise, systems and processes to deliver the organisation’s strategic and annual plans.

Person specification

Essential criteria

· Solid experience of high-level relationship development with institutional donors and/or global foundation

· Proven experience of negotiating and managing £multimillion, multi-faceted funding partnerships in the voluntary sector 

· A knowledge of the NGO funding landscape 

· Exceptional communication, networking, influencing and persuading skills.

· Building and sustaining effective working relationships both internally and externally

About the Role

Since the World Congress of Soil Science, which we hosted in Glasgow in 2022, the British Society of Soil Science (BSSS) is becoming increasingly recognised as the go-to organisation for evidence relating to soil.

This new post will deliver the Society’s activities around our policy work; producing draft guidance notes and consultation responses for our committees to comment on, working with policymakers and stakeholders to raise awareness of our members’ collective evidence-base and best practice knowledge.

You will work closely with the Executive Director to understand the Society’s priorities and support the delivery of our strategy by developing relevant guidance and policy projects, whilst horizon scanning to seek opportunities for the Society to have influence externally.

Your activities will make a demonstrable difference in raising awareness of the Society’s work amongst external stakeholders, leading to opportunities for collaboration and income generation.

There will be a requirement to coordinate work on behalf of the Society and to attend occasional conferences and events, throughout the year.

About You

Educated to degree level or equivalent you will be an established Policy and Public Affairs professional, with good attention to detail, agile in approach with excellent communication and influencing skills. 

Passionate about the natural environment you will place the Society at the centre of debate, advocating best practice around soil science and land use management across government departments and cross sector actors. 

We are looking for someone with a proven track record of coordinating and delivering policy responses, working with internal and external stakeholders in the development of policy and projects, and raising awareness of an organisation’s profile with politicians, policymakers and opinion formers.

You must have the ability to assimilate complex policy topics quickly, a solid understanding of political and policy processes, and be an excellent communicator.

Reporting into the Chief Operating Officer, the Head of Finance will provide a stable and flexible finance function to support the charity at an exciting time of growth and development. Job description

· To contribute to the provision of a secure, stable, supportive environment for young people which respects and promotes their health, culture, religion, race, identity and lifestyle.

· To assist in the day to day management of the home and to safeguard and promote the welfare of all children young people.

We are looking for an EDI Committee Chair who will ensure that EDI-BIIDE runs through all that we do, in a way that aligns with our strategic objectives and our resources.

About the Role

We are looking for an EDI Committee Chair to provide direction to the organisation’s EDI-BIIDE Work and to lead the EDI-BIIDE Committee, ensuring alignment between the organisation’s EDI-BIIDE Action Plan and the organisation’s three-year strategy and resources.

You will ensure EDI-BIIDE is consolidated into all aspects of our work – for our members, our staff and, crucially, for the public with whom we and our members interact professionally. You will embed good governance practices in everything the Committee and its members undertake, abiding by the Nolan principles.

The EDI Committee Chair will lead with confidence and collaborate effectively across the organisation to champion the work of the Committee and be accountable to the Board of Trustees for delivery.

Key responsibilities include:

• In liaison with the EDI-BIIDE Committee, to review the organisation’s EDI-BIIDE work to date, and to devise a revised EDI-BIIDE Action Plan that aligns with the organisation’s three-year strategy and resources.
• Lead the EDI-BIIDE Committee and ensure the Committee’s business is conducted collaboratively and methodically and that the Committee takes decisions within its authorised powers (as delegated by the Board of Trustees).
• Liaise with the organisation’s Board of Trustees, staff, and other committee chairs on the Committee’s work.
• Ensure decisions taken by the Committee are clear and unambiguous, and that responsibility for taking forward action points is properly allocated.
• Attend events and other external events as required, acting as an ambassador for the organisation’s work on EDI-BIIDE.
• Report to the Board of Trustees on a quarterly basis on the Committee’s activities, highlighting achievements, and escalating risks and issues as appropriate.
• Draft briefing notes and communications pieces for internal and external audiences as required.
• In collaboration with staff, recruit and induct members onto the Committee as required.
• Conduct periodic reviews on the effectiveness of the Committee and its members and implement improvements as necessary.

About You

You will need to have the following skills and experience:

• An extensive understanding of legal and social EDI-BIIDE matters (including the contextual, political, climatic and social changing landscapes, to advance equity for stakeholders, the public and UKCP). 
• Well-developed communication skills with attention to language meanings across different populations and audiences that promote equity, further collaboration, and uphold respect and dignity for all.
• Experience in embedding EDI-BIIDE principles and practices in an organisational context, understanding how to align EDI-BIIDE with wider business objectives, and working within resource constraints
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills with experience working in an influential role and driving cultural changes for individuals, groups, communities, boards, training and teams.
• Proven success in leading and chairing a committee in similar environments
• Ability to navigate complex and sensitive issues with tact, diplomacy, and empathy, and seek advice, guidance and support when necessary.

The VCSE Strategic Lead for Living Well and Wider Wellbeing is an exciting new role that will be focused on ensuring that the VCSE sector has voice and influence so that Salford people are supported to live well, with a focus on mental health and wellbeing.

The role will be aligned with Salford’s Living Well programme and the city’s Mental Health Collaborative. These are the cornerstones of the design and development of innovative solutions to adult mental health provision in the City. As well as the alignment with Living Well, the lead will also focus on creative health, placed-based working, and physical activity.

The Strategic Lead will work across a broad spectrum of VCSE and public sector partners that design, commission, or deliver activities and services that support the Mental Health and Wellbeing of Salfordians. This spectrum includes NHS Greater Manchester, Greater Manchester Mental Health Trust, Salford City Council, START, Mind in Salford, Salford Community Leisure, Salford Sport, and Physical Activity Alliance.

The Strategic Lead will play a key role in ensuring that there is collaborative working and effective communication within Living Well. This also includes key stakeholders, strategic partners in Salford, Local Authority, VCSE, and NHS organisations.

Living Well

Living Well is an innovative new service created and delivered by a partnership between START, Mind (Salford), Six Degrees, and Greater Manchester Mental Health Trust. A multi-agency team, collaborating to provide positive, humanistic, and safe experiences for those experiencing poor mental health who are unable to meet the threshold for community mental health services.

This post requires an enhanced level DBS check.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate extensive experience of building multi-sectoral partnerships and relationships, as well as having outstanding communication skills. They will also have a clear understanding of the VCSE sector, preferably in Salford, and mental health and wellbeing context across Greater Manchester.
