As one of the oldest endowments in the UK, we distribute around £40 million annually to organisations that work to create positive, long-term change.
Ahead of launching our new strategy in 2025, we are looking to address the UK’s most complex social issues, including tackling disparities in equity, safety and justice across areas such as employment and opportunities, education and early years, migration and asylum and domestic abuse.

Programme Director – A Safer Future
London/Hybrid
Circa £80,000 per annum
We are seeking an experienced and visionary Programme Director to lead our Safer Futures team, overseeing a critical funding priority that focuses on improving outcomes for:
1. People leaving prison
2. People exiting the asylum and migration system
3. People who have experienced domestic and sexual abuse
You will play a key role in driving forward our ambitious 2025 strategy, working collaboratively with grantees, partners, and other funders to ensure that our grant-making has the greatest possible impact.
As Programme Director, you will lead a dedicated team and manage an annual budget of approximately £10 million. You will take an externally focused, relational approach, building partnerships and working closely with stakeholders across the sector, including policy makers, researchers, and delivery organisations. You will ensure that our grants are impactful, fair, and aligned with the strategic goals of The Henry Smith Charity.
We are looking for a candidate who has:
- Significant experience of working in at least one of the following areas:
- Prisons and criminal justice
- The asylum and migration system
- Sexual and domestic abuse sector
- A strong understanding of effective interventions and the current policy landscape in this field
- Proven leadership experience, including managing teams and complex projects
- A track record of fostering partnerships and driving collaboration with external stakeholders

About My Life Films
My Life Films is an award-winning charity that uses film and TV to enrich and support the lives of people affected by dementia. This includes My Life TV, our specialist on-demand streaming service, with bespoke curated content designed to improve wellbeing. We are also known for our award-winning life story film service.
My Life TV is carefully put together with a wide range of content to enable people living with dementia to feel stimulated and connected to the world, improving their mental health and supporting their essential care. We work with highly respected content partners as well as produce our own programming in partnership with trusted organisations in the dementia care field and more widely.
About the Role
This is a hugely exciting opportunity for an experienced and confident interim CEO to come into the organisation and lead it during this important transition period, which is where we are shifting our model from in-house sales and marketing to a partner-led approach. We believe this will be the best way to reach and deliver benefits to people affected by dementia. This role will secure this partnership and develop a new strategy for My Life Film's next chapter.
Our current Executive Director is moving on for family reasons, having stewarded the charity and led the development and expansion of My Life TV over the past two years. She will remain available part-time with My Life Films for a short handover period.
Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the Interim ED will be responsible for all aspects of the charity's work and will be passionate about our work supporting people with dementia, entrepreneurial and collaborative, with commercial Business Development, Partnerships, and experience of charity mergers would be beneficial (but is not essential) as we have an experienced Board who will be on hand to support you.
As leader of the My Life Films team, you will also work across governance, finance, income generation, and impact. You will be responsible for delivering My Life Films' immediate strategy and working with the Board of Trustees.
About You
- Progress strategic partnership discussions for My Life TV with existing partners and identified potential partners to move to a wholesale or reseller model for My Life TV, or potentially acquisition of the service by another charity, company or care organisation
- Develop financial and operational models for potential partnerships, including scenario planning and P&L analysis, involving content, tech, marketing, and charitable impact. Lead negotiations, bringing in commercial, accounting, or legal support as needed.
- Work with the Board to create a strategic plan for My Life TV and new dementia-focused services, aligning with the charity's mission.
- Oversee daily operations, including finance, income generation, content production, partnerships, and reporting.
- Secure necessary funding through trusts, foundations, care groups, and events, representing My Life Films to stakeholders.
- Cultivate a positive environment, recruit and restructure as needed and provide coaching to enhance team performance.

Key duties will include
- leading on the operationalization of the Economic Empowerment work as defined within our social inclusion strategy
- providing leadership across the organisation to ensure programme teams are working towards common objectives
- to lead the Economic Empowerment team providing oversight of the technical leadership and expertise in this area to guide the development and delivery of effective programmes
- to strengthen collaboration across the organisation through working closely with thematic experts in other teams
- to lead in the identification of new strategic initiatives and innovative approaches in Economic Empowerment
- to undertake senior level representation of Sightsavers as a thematic/technical expert with external stakeholders, including with key partners and global networks
- to manage administrative, budgetary, compliance and reporting requirements

To succeed in this role you will need:
- Extensive experience in a relevant field, e.g., international development, business administration, international public policy or economics.
- Significant experience in economic empowerment/ livelihoods in the government, non-governmental or private sector organisations

- Significant experience leading and developing programmes in Economic Empowerment.

Knowledge of culturally relevant trends and developments that result in public engagement and income is essential for the role. The role will manage a small team, and you will provide leadership and support to the team. We are seeking candidates who are hands on and flexible who can work autonomously and be self-driven. About You:
To succeed in this exciting role, you will need to have significant experience in fundraising or philanthropy, ideally in a similar position. You will personally lead the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of a portfolio of donors at a high level (6- and 7-figure) which will primarily consist of HNWIs and Trusts and Foundations, and have a focus on identifying and developing new prospect relationships. You'll have a collaborative and ambitious approach, and have previous experience of managing a international philanthropy teams, with a proven track record of raising substantial donations, particularly at or above the £500k level, with experience at the £1 million level, being highly desirable.

Adept at building high-value donor relationships across diverse markets, you will be able to demonstrate a clear strategic vision, and a collaborative approach that drives growth within mission-driven organisations.
