Post summary
This is an exciting position for an exceptional person with fundraising, campaigning, policy, communications and management/leadership experience to temporarily direct one of the UK’s leading human rights NGOs. In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to oversee high-impact civil liberties campaigns to achieve real change and manage a high-performing multi-disciplinary team to further privacy, free expression and data protection rights in the United Kingdom. Importantly, you’ll be an experienced fundraiser, responsible for leading our grants and major giving to maintain Big Brother Watch’s income growth, and have experience with financial reporting.
You’ll have a diverse skill-set enabling you to line manage our Advocacy Manager, Digital Communications Manager and Head of Research and Investigations. An ideal candidate will also be responsible for leading the development of policy positions on new and emerging issues alongside our talented team.
You may also share spokesperson responsibilities, taking up our role as a recognised voice on civil liberties matters in the national media, though this is not essential.
The start and end of the position will include comprehensive handover periods with the current Director, and may include a period of co-working full time with the current Director.
We recognise that applicants may not have all the skills relevant to this role, or policy expertise across all of our key campaign areas. However, if you are a committed and experienced civil liberties advocate with significant fundraising and management experience, we would like to hear from you.
About you
We’re looking for highly experienced professional with a track record of NGO fundraising and management with a demonstrable passion for protecting civil liberties, especially privacy and freedom of expression. Ideally, you’ll have a high level of experience of or interest in working on new and emerging technologies.
Importantly, you’ll have excellent political judgement. You’ll have strong knowledge of British politics, a strong network of relevant contacts and significant experience both fundraising and advocating for change.
You’ll have an entrepreneurial approach, always identifying opportunities to boost Big Brother Watch’s campaigns, resources and reputation. The ideal candidate will appreciate the importance of winning in the court of public opinion in order to win in parliament, and have the skills to do both.
You’ll be a brilliant communicator internally and externally, able to simplify complex technology issues and convey powerful messages whether in campaign slogans or in interviews as a Big Brother Watch spokesperson.
You’ll be at ease working on a strictly non-partisan, cross-party basis and grounding our campaigns and communications strategies in human rights and liberal principles. You’ll also embody our principles of equality, respect and accountability.
We’re looking for someone with natural leadership qualities, ideally with experience of managing managers, who will bring the best out of our highly capable team as a motivating and compassionate director.

Fundraising

What You’ll Do

Develop and manage the Foundation’s brand and creative strategy in conjunction with the CEO and Head of Fundraising

Key duties and responsibilities:
- Work alongside the Partnerships Manager to implement the fundraising strategy with a focus on building unrestricted income levels for City of Trees.
- Assist the Partnerships Manager in managing existing key funder relationships and take the lead on developing new funder relationships and revenue streams.

You'll build and grow our engagement and conversions by tailoring content to our different audiences.

Responsibilities & Duties
- Working under the direction of the Digital Marketing Lead, and collaboratively with the Social Media Officer, develop and create impactful and engaging visual content, with a focus on video and graphics, for our social media and digital marketing channels to grow our social media audiences
- Ensure content is adapted / suitable for specific channels / audiences and is in line with brand aesthetics and identity
- Manage multiple video projects simultaneously
- With the Head of Communications and PR, work with external freelance editors when required
- Identify consumer trends to help with planning social media campaigns.

The JustMoney Movement is looking for a Communications & Events Coordinator (0.8 FTE) to help build our profile and reach, engaging diverse audiences from across the UK churches in learning, action and campaigning for a greener, fairer financial system and wider economy. Role Requirements
- Lead on the implementation of JustMoney Movement’s communications strategy, raising the profile of the organisation and our work, growing the scale, depth and diversity of engagement from across the UK churches, and ensuring the organisation remains on message both in content and visually.
- Oversee and develop our communications, including producing clear, consistent and credible copy, across media channels (including website, social media and email newsletters), to a variety of audiences, ensuring greater engagement and meaningful supporter journeys.

We’re looking for a marketing officer to join our busy brand marketing and planning team, to work on our health information and support marketing. Tender is an arts charity working with children and young people to prevent domestic abuse and sexual violence through creative projects. Overview of the role
The Data, Security, & Information Management team are responsible for defining and executing the RST and UKROEd Digital Strategies, developing and implementing systems that ensure all data is collected, processed, and stored securely and efficiently, and in accordance with our responsibilities under UK GDPR and data protection legislation.
As Information Governance Officer, you will have responsibility for a range of assurance activities in relation to the information governance frameworks of both companies (approx. 20% RST, 80% UKROEd), including how we meet the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR), Data Protection Act 2018, and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR).
You will be a first line point of contact for individual information rights requests (such as subject access requests), freedom of information requests, and other information governance and data protection-related matters.
You will understand the importance of privacy by design and information governance best practice to ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory obligations. You will work with colleagues to conduct Data Protection Impact Assessments on new, and amended, systems and processes.
You will take a leading role in supporting the application and maintenance of effective document and record management arrangements.
You will provide guidance and training on best practice and legislative compliance changes.
Principal Duties
- Be the first point of contact in the DSIM Business Area for expert advice on individual information rights requests (such as subject access requests) and freedom of information (FOI) requests, effectively escalating to the Head of DSIM when required.
- Help the Head of DSIM and the Data Protection Officer (DPO) to ensure we meet our statutory obligations and procedural requirements, produce clear responses in plain-English, and continuously improve our processes in this area.
- Support and assist people to clarify and refine their requests for information.
- Work with colleagues across the organisation to secure the necessary information and ensure comprehensive understanding of the scope and scale of any request.
- Maintain and monitor information governance logs, identifying and reporting on trends in information rights and freedom of information requests and circulating key data to the team and the wider organisation as necessary. Note: whilst the administration of information rights requests forms a critical part of the role, this is less than 15% of day-to-day activity.
- Provide data protection and information governance training, working with the Head of DSIM and DPO in developing training and delivery.
