Person Specification
Essential
- You must be able to follow the Shout model for support and be comfortable holding a minimum of four conversations simultaneously as directed by your Supervisor.
- You should be calm, compassionate, communicative, confident and interested in developing skills in the field of digital mental health.
- You must hold a qualification at Level 4 or above in counselling, psychology, psychotherapy, nursing or social work, and have suitable experience of working on the front line of mental health.
- You must hold, or commit to studying towards, a Level 3 safeguarding qualification, and have completed the Shout Safeguarding Texters training.
- You must be able to commit to taking shifts at times stipulated by our rota between three and five times per week on average, and be able to respond to occasional calls to help out if we are experiencing a substantial spike in demand at other times.
- You must be able to attend a group reflective session with our practice lead once a month, which will be held remotely.
Contracts of either 3, 4 or 5 shifts (shift=3hrs) per week - Minimum of 4 conversations at any one time

Purpose of the post
HDR UK and the BHF Data Science Centre are committed to meaningful involvement and engagement where patients and the public are actively involved in shaping our work and decision-making. Reporting to the Centre’s Operations Director, this is a pivotal role that will be integral to ensuring the patient and public voice is embedded in our work at all stages.
You will work closely with public members, research and NHS communities, internal colleagues, charity partners, and funders to develop and implement plans for PPIE activity across all of our key areas of interest, in addition to the governance of the Centre.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who has a passion for meaningful involvement and engagement of patients and the public, to shape and influence our work on the safe, ethical and scientifically robust use of data for research into the causes, prevention and treatment of all diseases of the heart and circulation.
The successful candidate will have a track record in working with individuals, groups and communities and have the ability to communicate complex information in clear, engaging ways. The post holder will have excellent influencing and negotiation skills, experience of working on complex projects with multiple partners and be comfortable with working at pace. Patient and public involvement and engagement in data-driven research is a growing field. The successful candidate will show a willingness and experience of developing and delivering innovative approaches to involvement where previously opportunities may not have been obvious.
Main responsibilities
Embedding PPIE in our work
- Lead on the delivery of the PPIE strategy for the BHF Data Science Centre, with oversight from the Operations Director, incorporating regular (e.g. annual) reviews and updates of the strategy.
- Lead and facilitate meetings with public contributors to integrate meaningful PPIE throughout all aspects of our work.
- Undertake and manage specific involvement and engagement activities, including but not limited to focus groups, engagement events, developing and undertaking surveys, supporting the writing of plain English summaries of projects and their outputs. In collaboration with senior colleagues, support involvement of patients and the public in the governance of our work.
- Review and provide advice on PPIE elements of research applications ensuring adequate PPIE is incorporated and provide advice where needed to researchers.
- Develop methods to expand reach and ensure diversity of perspectives and work with the HDR UK PPIE team to grow involvement of currently underrepresented and underserved groups in health data science.
- Build and manage relationships with colleagues within the BHF Data Science Centre, working collaboratively to support and manage involvement and engagement across all areas of work.
- Work closely with the internal communications colleagues to create and disseminate engaging content (e.g. news stories on outputs and impact, videos, infographics, case studies) on our work and involvement and engagement activities using a variety of communication tools.
- Horizon scan and liaise with colleagues across the BHF Data Science Centre and HDR UK for opportunities to increase visibility of the institute’s engagement and involvement impact, i.e. through conferences, festivals, journals and other publications.
Developing PPIE best practice and collaborative working
- Incorporate best practice in our work, learning from examples of successful patient and public engagement that could influence our work
- Provide briefings for colleagues to share best practice and examples of successful patient and public engagement
- Collaborate with PPIE colleagues to coordinate public outreach initiatives and other events, ensuring that stakeholders are afforded opportunities to contribute their input and provide feedback. Establish effective working relationships and ‘ways of working’ with strategic partners to maximise opportunities for collaboration in patient and public involvement and engagement.
- Act as an internal and external ambassador for public, patient and practitioner engagement and involvement.
- Monitor and report on performance of PPIE across the Centre, make effective use of digital approaches to maximize the ability to collaborate, communicate and continuously learn.
Supporting PPIE members
- Be the point-of-contact for all BHF Data Science Centre public contributors, ensuring they are kept updated, receive all information in a timely manner and that any issues are dealt with in a sensitive manner.
- Lead on the recruitment of new public contributors as required. Adapt, develop and provide training for public contributors where necessary identifying training requirements as needed.
- Working with BHF Data Science Centre colleagues, maintain patient and public contact lists in Hubspot (CRM).
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
Experience
- Experience of working with patients, carers and members of the public with diverse interests.
- Experience of running patient/public involvement activities and evaluating these activities, strategies and methodologies, preferably in a research environment
- Experience of promoting the need and value of engagement and involvement to a wide range of stakeholders and acting as an advocate
- Experience of writing / developing content for public and research audiences and delivering presentations
- Experience of demonstrating an understanding of health research and the needs of patients and the public

We’re looking for an effective communicator, who is great at collaborating and has a track record of delivering significant media and public affairs campaign results. You’ll bring to life and manage the implementation of 38 Degrees’ media and public affairs strategy, in service of 38 Degrees’ mission: to make our country fairer, more respectful and sustainable. As we adjust to a shift in our political environment, this brand new role will relentlessly and powerfully amplify 38 Degrees campaigns and the voices of our supporters to the general public, the media and decision makers in the UK.
You’ll manage our Public Affairs & Media team, including a new Public Affairs & Media officer role – working together, and with colleagues across the campaigns team and beyond, to execute our Public Affairs & Media strategy and deliver impressive results. Whilst this is a Manager role, it’s also a very hands on role – you’ll be as at home picking up the phone to regional TV to discuss local supporters whose experiences could make perfect case studies for the big story of the day, and helping those people tell their story, as you are meeting with MPs and their staff to use our Campaigns By You platform to run campaigns on local issues in their constituencies.

Your background and experience
We’re looking for someone who can effectively grasp the 38 Degrees approach to public affairs, which combines pressure and persuasion – and who is confident in pursuing both. You will be able to show you can use both, in the right circumstances: from liaising with Metro Mayors on possible partnership campaigns, to commissioning and landing coverage of snap polling that demonstrates public opinion on government plans. The person recruited will need to be a brilliant communicator, and be passionate about opening up democracy and making political and corporate change accessible to all.
You’ll be a great fit for this role if you have excellent political and news judgement – you know what can make a story and what impact that story can have on decision makers.
You’ll be extremely comfortable speaking to politicians and their teams, along with journalists, other communications teams in partner organisations, and 38 Degrees supporters who act as case studies in our campaigns. You may already have extensive journalist or political networks and relationships, and you’ll have definitely had results. We’re looking for a person who knows the political and news agenda each day, and can help set it too.

Sitting within the Supporter Led Fundraising (SLF) department, the Regional Fundraising Team at Alzheimer’s Research UK (ARUK) is responsible for recruiting, stewarding and motivating individuals, companies and community groups to raise £3m per year.
The team consists of 12 home based Regional Fundraising Officers (RFO’s). As one of three Community Fundraising Managers (CFM) you will be responsible for the line management of approx. 4-5 members of the team alongside the management of one of our income streams – either Regional Corporate, Community Groups or DIY.
Reporting into the Head of Regional Fundraising, you will work closely with senior stakeholders within ARUK and be required to play a key role in the implementation of the ARUK 10-year strategy and supporting on the development of the fundraising strategy.
You will work closely with the other CFMs and the SLF Managers Group to ensure consistency with supporter stewardship, manage budgets and support in financial planning, review team capacity and identify and manage priorities throughout the year, ensuring efficiency and a first-class supporter experience. Your overall goal will be helping drive our ambitious organisation growth and ultimately helping us find a cure.
Due to the nature of this role, we will require you to attend our Granta Park office, near Cambridge, one day per week, plus travel to meet the team and attend external meetings/events.
This is a 12-month fixed term contract to cover a period of maternity leave.
Main duties and responsibilities of the role:
Line Management
· Line management of the high performing remote Regional Fundraising Officers; inspiring and driving their success to ensure they remain highly motivated in their roles, achieve their targets and play a key part in the performance of the wider team. As well as 1-1’s and personal growth reviews.
· You will monitor, review, and empower direct reports to ensure effective communication across the wider team and with key stakeholders e.g. Volunteering, Corporate Team, Sporting Events Team, Gifts in Wills Team, Supporter Care Team, Supporter Engagement Team and others.
· Alongside the other CFMs you will be responsible for planning and delivering in person team meetings approx. 5 times per year – these are key meetings to bring the team together and share plans and ideas in addition to ensuring that the remote based team are meeting with and hearing from key internal teams.
Income streams
You will be responsible for one of the following:
· DIY Income Stream Ownership - Writing and delivering the strategy for the current income stream and bringing in ambitious growth to £2.5m over the next year.
· Community Groups Income Stream - Writing and delivering the strategy for the income stream and identifying areas of growth
· Regional Corporate Income Stream - Writing and delivering the strategy for the Regional Corporate income stream and identifying areas of growth
Monitoring and Reporting
· An immediate responsibility for this role is the implementation of the new CRM database (Salesforce). You will need to dedicate time to understating and supporting the implementation, ensuring that it works for the team and that the team are utilising it according to business process and its implementation allows for maximum benefit to the team and all areas of fundraising
· Manage the team’s income and expenditure budget, including monthly reporting, and supporting with monthly reforecasts, and annual budget and operational plan setting.
· Review supporter numbers and income against DIY targets to track impact, ROI and cost income ratio and report back regularly.
· Ensure the fundraising CRM is being used effectively to facilitate accurate supporter stewardship and financial reporting, data segmentation and analysis.
· Use data insights and trends to support the team in budgeting, forecasting and mitigation plans.
· Lead on the build, development and use of Power BI Reporting across DIY and other income streams.
· Continue to review and be willing to change team processes and contribute to wider organisational process changes where necessary.
Relationship Management
· Build and maintain excellent working relationships with agencies, platform providers and event delivery companies to identify new opportunities and ensure all avenues are being optimised for ARUK.
· Work with the Sporting Events Managers to create a process to identify and steward high-value event participants to add value to their fundraising and ensure we are spotting opportunities beyond their current event.
· Work closely with the Marketing & Engagement Team to brief in marketing requirements, share trends, learnings, and results to optimise future activities.
· Work closely with managers from SLF Departments to support on the strategic direction of ARUK, prioritise work and any conflicts across teams, as well as deliver any tactical projects, new processes and ways of working.
Strategy & Operational Planning
· Work in consultation with the Head of Regional Fundraising to develop the regional fundraising strategy and annual tactical plan for ARUK to continue to build income growth in line with organisational objectives.
· Stay abreast of sector activity and actively participate in sector wide forums.
Stewardship and Supporter experience
· Plan and deliver an excellent communications journey for DIY participants and regional supporters including exploring new technologies and how we can talk to our supporters in the way most effective and relevant to them - whether that be email, phone, face to face, through social channels. Whilst also ensuring it aligns with wider stewardship goals and future cross-sell asks.
· Work with the wider SLF team to share best practice, ‘surprise and delight’ success and re-engagement activity to help drive long-term loyalty.
· Work with Philanthropy and Direct Marketing Teams to build on the Mid Value Donor programme.
· Work alongside Data and Insights Teams to understand the potential lifetime value of our supporters and ensure opportunities are developed for supporters to hold a long-term fundraising relationship with ARUK.
What we are looking for:
· Line Management experience.

· Good experience and knowledge of digital marketing strategies with a focus on supporter acquisition.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and proactive self-starter to join our Fundraising Team as the 'Community Engagement Fundraiser - South'. In this role, you will be responsible for building strong relationships, growing our community presence on the ground, generating new fundraising leads, whilst stewarding current fundraisers through their DRWF fundraising journey.
The post holder will require experience and a good knowledge of community fundraising. The ability to deliver against a regional income target with energy and enthusiasm that will inspire supporters to go the extra mile with their fundraising efforts for DRWF.
You will be target driven, proactive, a determined self-starter and thrive on working with a range of fundraisers, encouraging them to choose DRWF as their preferred charity.
Key areas of responsibilities
To recruit, manage, develop and support an expanding network of supporters wishing to fundraise for Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation (DRWF), in order to achieve agreed income and expenditure targets; whilst supporting other targeted deliverables for DRWF, such as Lottery, Regular Giving and Legacy Giving.
