POST:
Research Coordinator for the SWERV project at National Ugly Mugs (NUM)
SALARY AND HOURS:
Salary: £34,125 FTE at 0.5.
This is a 30 month contract. Specific days to be agreed on appointment. NUM are open to discussions around flexible working patterns to ensure a positive work/life balance. Operational hours are Monday-Friday 9am-5pm
RESPONSIBLE FOR:
Supporting NUM's research project, 'Sex Workers Evaluate Reporting Violence' (SWERV)
LOCATION OF THE POST HOLDER:
You will be remote working and will be provided with the equipment and tools required to deliver this work. You will need a secure environment and access to a stable internet connection. In the event that you were required to travel within the United Kingdom all your costs will be covered by NUM.
ROLE SUMMARY
We are looking for a Research Coordinator to join us at NUM to support our Sex Workers Evaluate Reporting Violence (SWERV) research project!
SWERV is a research initiative between health researchers at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and National Ugly Mugs (NUM), in collaboration with Brunel University. Together, with the meaningful involvement of sex workers across the UK, we will evaluate how membership and engagement with NUM services affects sex workers’ safety, mental health and wellbeing.
About NUM:
National Ugly Mugs (NUM) is an award-winning charity with a mission to ‘end all forms of violence against sex workers.’ NUM provides a mechanism for sex industry workers to report crimes and harm they experience and share this information within their communities to warn others of potentially dangerous individuals and situations.
We have a dedicated casework team of industry experts who support sex workers to further access criminal justice remedies and other services as determined by victims/survivors to cope and recover from crimes they experience in the ways they choose. We also host a range of other projects in racial justice, mental health, drop-in support (Scotland), and vocational exploration.
About the project:
The SWERV project is a multi-year research collaboration between NUM and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. We will study how NUM’s alerts, the NUMchecker, reporting and casework (‘interventions’) affect sex workers’ safety and mental health, through five work packages A-E. We will interview sex workers who have and who haven’t used NUM, and service providers, about their views and experiences of NUM’s services, to understand who benefits from the interventions, how and why (‘qualitative process evaluation’ – work package B). We will ask new NUM members, and sex workers who aren’t members, to fill in a questionnaire twice, six months apart. The questionnaire will ask about violence, safety strategies, and mental health, to compare the experiences of sex workers who do and don’t use the alerts and the NUMchecker (‘impact evaluation’ – work package C). We will estimate value for money, by calculating how much the interventions cost to run and comparing this to no intervention, in terms of preventing violence against sex workers and improving their quality of life (‘economic evaluation’ – work package D). We will use the information to understand how NUM’s services work in different places and for different people, depending on their circumstances and the wider environment. We will take the ‘DEPTH’ approach which involves ‘dialogue’ workshops with sex workers and practitioners to design the research and recommendations together (work packages A and E). Together, we will use what we learn to recommend how to improve community-based violence prevention and survivor support services ‘by and for’ sex workers.
Person Specification
A successful candidate should:
· Have demonstrable experience and understanding of sex work, sex worker rights and self-determination, and be in good standing with the sex worker rights and sex work research communities in the UK
· Have a clear understanding of how intersecting factors including criminalisation, stigma, systemic racism, gender, disability, poverty, mental health and access to resources influence sex workers’ lived experiences, how they may engage with services and research, and their access to public services and police protection
· Be familiar with all aspects of the charity sector, the work of National Ugly Mugs and other sex worker-serving and sex worker-led organisations.
· Have knowledge of systemic racism as it operates within the UK and be embedded within an anti-racist and anti-oppressive framework, whether this be through previous work, activism or personal life experiences
· Have experience leading or coordinating projects and a comfortability with qualitative and/or quantitative data collection (e.g. surveys, interviews, focus groups) and management, including participant recruitment.
· Have experience of organising and/or delivering events/workshops/outputs to share research/practice with communities and seek their input/feedback
· Have commitment to participatory research principles
· Have a commitment to NUM’s core principles of Sex Workers First, Quality Support and Learning and Innovation
· Possess strong written and verbal communication skills
· Have experience working independently and leading projects.
All candidates must be legally permitted to work in the UK
It is desirable, but not essential, that a successful candidate should also:
· Have experience of collaborating with different partner organisations (e.g. peer-led organisations, services, universities)
· Have experience of qualitative and/or quantitative research design and analysis
· Have experience of participatory research
· Have knowledge or experience of evaluation methods (e.g. process evaluation, impact evaluation, economic evaluation, realist evaluation)
· Have formal research experience in the humanities, social sciences and/or health sciences
We understand that everyone’s experience is different and encourage applications from those who may not meet all of the person specifications. If you’re passionate about equality, economic empowerment, and ending violence against sex workers, we want to hear from you.

The Cardinal Hume Centre seek a Philanthropy Manager to seize abundant fundraising opportunities with wealthy supporters and really make their mark at this inspirational organisation working to counter to homelessness, deprivation and rampant inequality in central London.
Applications close at: 9 a.m. Monday 22nd July 2024.
Location: London (Westminster, SW1)
About the Cardinal Hume Centre
We believe everyone should have the opportunity to live a full life, but we know that homelessness and poverty can wreck that potential. Too often homelessness at a young age is repeated and compounded in later years.
Our renewed vision is to increase our focus on young people, children and their families — to value every individual, nurture their potential and help people thrive.
For more than 35 years, the Cardinal Hume Centre has helped people facing poverty and the threat of homelessness in Westminster, enabling children and young people to turn their lives around. Responding to the needs of the community the Centre is adaptive and reactive, providing walk-in appointments with their assessment team who offer basic advice and refer to our other services which include:
-
Our Family Centre
-
Free legal immigration advice
-
Welfare benefits advice for those struggling to manage on a low income
-
Housing advice for people living in unsuitable or insecure accommodation or worried about losing their home
-
One-to-one employment support to help those unemployed find jobs they want to do and improve in-work prospects
-
One-to-one English language support to those who find their language struggles are holding them back from finding employment.
All of the above is part of our strategy to help young people and families avoid homelessness, whilst supporting those who are already experiencing or have experienced homelessness.
About the role
We are looking to recruit a Philanthropy Manager to maximise income secured from major gifts and to work with the Director of Fundraising on the strategic development of philanthropic giving at the Centre.
This is an exciting role in our fundraising team, where you will manage existing philanthropic donor relationships and work closely with the Director of Fundraising and Chief Executive.
Working with the Director of Fundraising, you will also develop a philanthropic fundraising campaign to uplift income for the Centre’s 40th Anniversary through 2026.
This is a fabulous role with so much opportunity in this small but mighty charity. You can expect to be given every chance to shine, with plenty of support from the Director of Fundraising. She is an experienced major donor fundraiser, having worked at a number of large organisations — the knowledge from which she is now applying to really grow philanthropy at CHC.
Joining a supportive team, you’ll collaborate on a number of projects and campaigns. You will see firsthand the difference you make in the lives of the children and young people who use the Centre.
The successful candidate will not only significantly deepen their understanding of major donor fundraising but will also get lots of exposure to other income streams, broadening their horizons.
Who we are looking for

You will have genuine empathy for the charity’s beneficiaries, and you will also have the self-confidence and self-awareness needed to speak to a range of audiences whilst being a true advocate for the Centre.

Permanent contract
Based in London SW8 / home and flexible working
Charity People is delighted to be partnering with The National Literacy Trust, an independent charity helping people overcome these challenges and change their life chances through the power of words – reading, writing, speaking and listening. From first words, through school days to training, jobs and beyond.

We’re a team of creatives that shape and disrupt policy narratives.
Policy shapes the world and our future. It matters. This might be why you started working in policy yourself. And it might be why you, like us, believe that getting policy unstuck is among the most important challenges of our time.
You can check out our website to find out more about us, what we do, and examples of past work. But as someone thinking about working with us, there are two things in particular you should know.
The first is that we care about what we do. Our clients matter to us, as does the quality of our work, and, most importantly, the impact our work has on the world. We want to shape policies that benefit people, and we’re ready to go the extra mile to achieve that. This means that we’re always in a brainstorm mode, we think beyond the scope, and we put the hard work in to bring our ideas to life.
The second is that we care who we work for – and with. We want to work with people and organisations who share our vision and have a similar drive and ambition. And yes, sometimes that means we reject work if we don’t think it fits. We want to build long-term relationships with our clients (most have been working with us for 3+ years) and we work together as part of one team with them. We want you to fit in that dynamic – and we’re looking for someone who can show that that’s how they work too.
The job
We’re looking for someone to wear two hats.
The first hat you’ll wear is that of a client lead. You’ll have full responsibility for the clients and projects that you and your team are working on. One day you might be working on ocean policy campaigns, helping technical clients adapt their language to make it engaging and influential, and in doing so helping to push the ocean agenda forward. The next you could be working with a not-for-profit, leading the creation of their brand identity, marketing strategy and overseeing the launch of their new website.
We’re on the hunt for a seasoned communications strategist and a creative campaigner. You’ll be someone who feels at home bringing your knowledge and experience to any communications challenge: from campaign strategy to brand strategy, from policy communications to digital marketing.
You should be a creative thinker, a problem solver, and someone who knows how to run projects profitably – and grow client relationships at the same time. You’ll be able to build relationships quickly, with clients and colleagues. You’ll spot mistakes, tactfully ask difficult questions, and tell us and our clients how to improve things.
The second hat you’ll wear is that of a new business lead. You’ll work with the CEO, Head of Strategy and other colleagues to identify, respond to, and win new business opportunities. We’re looking for someone who has directly relevant experience here – so you’ll have had experience in new business for an agency or consultancy, or have supported that function.
You’ll have experience responding to RFPs (and hopefully winning them – definitely tell us if you have a good hit rate), you’ll be excited by the idea of travelling abroad to give presentations to prospects and convert them to clients, and you’ll have ideas about how we can improve our marketing to generate more inbound leads. Where some see new business efforts as taxing and draining, you’ll be energised by it, and see new business as a game that is fun to play, and win.
Key skills and experience
The core things we are looking for are:
- Minimum 6 years experience, with at least three years in an equivalent agency setting
- Have communications expertise in creating stories, shaping narratives and social/policy campaigns and/or public affairs
- Experience and expertise in brand communications and/or strategy development
- Ability to produce creative and engaging communication materials: reports, websites, social media and print
We’re also looking for a mix of the below. We don’t expect you to have all of them, but you should be nodding to most of the things on the lists below.
Project management
- Excellent account and project management skills
- Finding creative solutions to complex problems
- Ability to break down large strategy and campaign projects into phased deliverables, guiding clients through the process
- Strong timeline and budget management skills
- Ability to identify areas of improvement/efficiencies, for yourself and your team, both in terms of process, training, and any other areas you identify
Team management
- Experience managing a team, growing their skills and ability (this role will have line management responsibilities)
- Onboarding new team members
- On an ongoing basis, identify future recruits for the company/build a wide network around the industry
Thought leadership
- Write thought leadership articles for the CFC website, at least once per quarter, ideally one a month promoting our thinking and best practices
- Participate in CFC training and knowledge sharing (webinars etc.)
- Attend events and conferences on behalf of the company
New business & sales
- Identify and respond to appropriate RFPs; lead pitch approaches
- Identify opportunities for future work with existing clients, write proposals to win that work
- Identify and pursue new leads
- Identify and shape new product offerings to take to market
If you're still interested, you can find out more about the application process on our website (Google "cast from clay lead consultant"). We look forward to chatting.
The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.
