The British Academy – the UK’s national body for the humanities and social sciences – is seeking an Events Manager (Public Engagement) to join the Communications and Marketing department to devise and deliver the year-round public engagement programme.

The role

The role will be responsible for the planning, management and delivery of programmes designed to support researchers to develop their skills and experience in public engagement as a route to impact. This includes the annual flagship Summer Showcase festival, the nationwide public engagement funding scheme SHAPE, Involve and Engage, and key partnerships and collaborations with other organisations in the sector.

You will work closely with the Head of Events and Public Engagement on the strategic development of these programmes and will be responsible for supporting and guiding researchers to develop high-quality, innovative projects which provide meaningful opportunities for two-way dialogue with the public about their research and the humanities and social sciences more broadly.

About you

You will be someone who has passion and experience of delivering high-quality public engagement activities and who thrives in the ‘live’ environment of events and other public-facing activities. You will be equally as comfortable with planning, including developing frameworks for monitoring and evaluation.

You will also have experience in managing and developing people, whether directly managing staff or leading on a task with a dotted-line basis. A core part of this role is working in partnership with both internal teams and external organisations, and so we are looking for someone who is collegiate and flexible and who understands how to build positive working relationships across a diverse range of skillsets and experiences.

You will be joining at an exciting time, with the recent completion of three brand-new state-of-the-art events spaces at our home on Carlton House Terrace and continued growth in the Academy’s role as a research funder. You will play an important role in contributing to the ongoing programme for this new development.

 We are looking for an enthusiatic and confident Student Support Officer to work within our student, education and trade union teams at the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP).

Based within our Practice and Development Directorate, this is an exciting new role for someone interested in supporting physiotherapy learners through their studies. You will have the opportunity to work closely with physiotherapy students to provide advice, support and guidance to those facing discrimination or bullying behaviour.

The role requires you to develop and sustain valuable relationships with the CSP’s network of student representatives and higher education institutions (HEIs) to support students seeking assistance. You will work closely with CSP staff, local CSP representatives and external stakeholders to understand the issues and needs of students, offering integrated support and advice.  You will be comfortable in communicating key messages, developing guidance and supporting promotional events to increase student engagement and recruitment. You will develop processes to capture data and evaluate the impact of this new role.

Main Areas of Responsibility

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced data protection and compliance professional to join our central Head Office team in East Croydon. The Data Protection Compliance Manager role is key to the Federation, as it helps facilitate and assure the organisation’s ability to meet its data protection obligations, in line with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Data Protection Act.

This role serves as the primary point of contact for all matters related to data protection, encompassing the responsibilities of raising awareness, providing training, managing data incidents, and maintaining data protection policies. St John Ambulance works at the heart of communities, supporting and enabling them to access and receive physical and mental health first aid. We do this through developing and providing effective community response and outreach services (e.g. Ambulance response, Falls response and Night Time Economy) and using our longstanding expertise to empower people with vital clinical skills and the confidence to use them (e.g. our Volunteers and Community Advocates, NHS Cadets and Young Responders programmes). There is also a buoyant social enterprise network which delivers first aid training and supplies medical consumables to businesses and consumers.

Job Summary

Young Responders is an exciting project that started delivering street first aid sessions during 2023 as part of St John Ambulance. The project was created to engage and empower young people from diverse communities who face the greatest health inequities to become active health citizens, through practical physical first aid and mental awareness sessions relevant to the challenges they face. 

The programme is aimed at young people aged 11 to 25, who would not typically come through our doors delivering first aid training to young people from under-served communities. In 2023 the Young Responders team delivered session to almost 16,000 Young People and over 2024 they aim to reach a further 20,000 Young People, if not more. 

Working as part of the team as a Facilitator you will support the growth of the service and be responsible for directly leading and delivering first aid training sessions with community organisations and educational settings. This role will also offer pastoral support to our growing Volunteer team offering mentoring and guidance to those delivering sessions supporting their welfare and wellbeing. 

This is a 35 hours per week role and we are looking for someone who is empathetic and feels passion about supporting Young People. The role is to cover London so travel is essential. 

Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience

• Experience in Youth Work or working with young people in a community context
• Experience of planning and/or the delivery of community-based training
• Experience of safeguarding and willing to undertake Safeguarding training relevant to the role
• Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels, verbally and in writing
• Understanding of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion and issues around social mobility
• Ability to work well in a team and able to motivate young people and volunteers
• Due to the nature of the role you will need to hold a full, UK driving licence (maximum 6 points) and have access to your own vehicle

Independent Age is the national charity focused on improving the lives of people facing financial hardship in later life. We believe no one should face financial hardship in later life.

Our Helpline and expert advisers offer free, practical support to older people without enough money to live on. Through our grants programme, we support hundreds of local organisations working with older people across the UK. 

We use the knowledge and insight gained from our support services and partnerships to highlight the issues experienced by older people in poverty and campaign for change.

Responsibilities and Person Specification:

The Campaigns Manager plays a key role in developing and delivering campaign activity to improve the systems that older people rely on. The role helps deliver the department influencing strategy, mobilising older people living on a low income, and those who care about them, to take action to support Independent Age’s influencing campaigns, often targeting Governments across the nations, companies, regulators and others.

You should have a passion for improving the lives of older people on a low income through influencing policy change. With a strong understanding of how policy, public affairs, media communications and campaigning interact to make positive policy change happen, you’ll bring experience of working with people with lived experience to shine a light on the need for change.

As part of this role, you will bring to life our work as an environmental justice organisation and ensure that the voices of those most at risk and already hardest hit by the climate and nature crises, both in the UK and overseas, are at the centre of our media and comms stories.

Key Skills: 

• Extensive experience pitching and placing impactful stories across mainstream UK broadcast, online and print media.
• Proven relationships with journalists, editors, producers and broadcasters at national, regional and specialist climate and environmental outlets.
• Ability to work well under pressure, meet tight deadlines and respond quickly to reactive opportunities.
• In-depth knowledge of the UK media landscape and emerging comms trends.
• Extensive experience delivering successful news and PR strategies.

We're recruiting for someone to lead our Capacity Building & Standards (CB&S) function on a maternity cover contract.

The CB&S function aims to build the capacity of organisations and institutions to embed the processes, skills, structures and cultures needed for effective public engagement in decision making. This includes work in the public, private and third sectors.On a practical level this includes developing and delivering training courses and mentoring programmes; setting up and supporting networks; authoring good practice guides and thought leadership pieces; being responsible for our Knowledge Base and tools; leading sector-wide standards development; and, managing and other programmes and projects that supports the embedding of public participation and engagement in the UK. 

In this role you will lead the CB&S team in the development, design and delivery of impactful and sustainable capacity building and standards setting programmes and projects. You will oversee the work of the function and quality direct work of around 10 people (both CB&S team and cross-function roles). You will be a member of our management team, be accountable for the function achieving its objectives, report on function performance to the board and oversee the implementation of our impact framework supported by the impact working group.

We work across the UK, with offices in Belfast and London. Many of our staff work from home across the UK or in a hybrid pattern, rather than being based at one of our offices, though we meet up regularly as a team
