finEQUITY
We support the upward mobility of justice impacted individuals by providing access to a suite of no-cost financial empowerment services.
Community members returning home from prison face a proliferation of credit, income, and capital challenges that deepen poverty and stifle opportunities for economic and social mobility. Prison stays preclude community members from advancing their financial histories while incarcerated and contribute directly to the build-up of negative wealth assets (e.g. high levels of debt, tarnished or invisible credit scores). Families with formerly incarcerated heads of households hold an average of $13K in criminal court-related debt, and 30% of those returning home from prison have no credit score whatsoever. As a result, formerly incarcerated community members and their loved ones face great difficulties accessing life-building assets, including safe and secure housing, reliable transportation, affordable phone and utility plans, and non-predatory financial services. This, in turn, threatens the ability of those coming home to remain in their community and furthers cycles of generational poverty for families impacted by incarceration.
finEQUITY offers a suite of no-cost, on-demand financial capability services to address the most common shared financial challenges experienced by community members after their release from a jail or prison facility. In 2022, we began offering a no-cost, no-consequence micro-loan that enabled formerly incarcerated community members to establish a credit score. We piloted a more holistic program in mid-2023; via a web-based app, we help formerly incarcerated individuals get matched to a no-cost, low-risk opportunity to establish or build credit. They can also get support for debt, car-buying and /or banking needs. We also now allow same-day access to a volunteer empowerment coach on demand for justice imapcted community members. Participants can earn nominal cash rewards or debt relief for their completed financial milestones.
