Winston’s Wish is a digital first organisation leading the way in Digital Transformation across the Bereavement sector. This role is new and exciting and will play a vital part in helping Winston’s Wish turn up the dial across our Mass Participation strategy.

The Head of Mass Participation Fundraising is responsible for overseeing our mass fundraising team. Leading the Events, Community and Individual Giving teams to maximise income and to introduce and lead on a new and exciting mass participation programme. Developing outstanding supporter relationships and delivering long-term sustainable income through innovative, audience led fundraising.

 

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES  

Specific Duties 

Leadership

• To lead and inspire the Mass Participation team fostering a collaborative and high performing culture that delivers against income and objectives
• Provide clear and supportive leadership that motivates staff to achieve, develop and grow in their roles
• Undertake quarterly reviews for all direct reports

Mass Participation Fundraising

• Lead the development of all fundraising products, propositions and community and events, to effectively acquire and engage our mass audience target markets
• Use innovation and donor and market research to help define and shape Winston Wish’s Mass fundraising offer
• Lead the development of a robust lottery programme
• Work collaboratively with the Director of Income Generation to develop an approach to Gifts in Wills and legacy marketing
• Maximise income, by overseeing the development of key income sources, including community, challenge events, in memoriam and regular giving programmes
• Drive an innovation-focused culture, constantly evolving our product offerings to expand the charity’s reach and impact
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge on sector and market trends, the legal environment impacting on public fundraising and ensure compliance with standards determined by Fundraising Regulator
• Lead on the development and execution of acquisition strategies to meet agreed targets
• Lead on the development and execution of retention, conversion and upgrade strategies to ensure donor LTV and sustainable income

Strategy, Planning and reporting

• Develop and execute bold strategies to grow the charity’s mass participation portfolio, optimising supporter journey and maximising income generation
• Work with the Director of Income Generation and the Head of Mass Participation Fundraising to develop the annual budget, including leading on monthly performance reports and contributing to quarterly reforecasts and reporting against KPI’s and milestones
• Oversee the development of supporter journeys and stewardship of all mass audiences and key community relationships to maximise retention and ensure long-term income growth

 

Collaboration

• In collaboration with the Marketing Communications team, oversee the development of compelling integrated fundraising acquisition and engagement plans
• Liaise with trustees’ internal stakeholders to develop Mass fundraising activity, and contribute to reporting for trustees and SLT as required
• Manage key agency relationships to deliver successful fundraising

Casework

• Under the direction of the Safer Churches Programme Manager to undertake strategic safeguarding projects and improvement work including polices and projects in line with identified business needs and operational plans. The role:

Reporting directly to the COO, the Financial Controller will ensure the provision of consistent, robust financial advice to the charity as a whole.  This person will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of finance and financial operations, ensuring these are compliant with statutory requirements and appropriate and effective financial controls are in place. The person:

The successful candidate will be a qualified accountant and will be able to provide excellent financial management and reporting for the Charity. They will be confident working with different internal stakeholders and external professional advisors and will be capable of considering their different requirements and priorities in a knowledgeable way. This person will have excellent attention to detail and will be highly organised and a strong communicator across a wide range of audiences. Educated to Degree level or the equivalent (ACCA, CIMA, ACA or CIPFA), this person will have excellent interpersonal skills, strong written and verbal communication and will be up to date on all MS Office packages and financial software including SAGE being essential.

Candidates with prior experience of working with endowed Trusts, Foundations or Charities or who have worked in Charities that have income derived from a permanent endowment (either partially or totally), will be of particular interest, so please draw attention to this when applying.

The role of the Business Manager is to work closely with the Chief Executive, Chair, and the Board of Trustees to ensure the charity is effectively managed and meets its governance, financial, and employment obligations. The Business Manager will also support the charity's development, helping to implement its aims and objectives, ensuring that its projects align with its brand and values, and contributing to areas like grant giving when necessary.

The Business Manager will be accountable to the Board of Trustees and directly report to the Chief Executive and Chair of Trustees. Key responsibilities include overseeing the charity's finances, providing financial updates to the Board, ensuring the charity operates in line with legal and regulatory requirements, and managing policies and systems that ensure the charity functions smoothly.

The Business Manager will oversee financial tasks such as budget management, payroll, year-end statements, liaising with auditors and accountants, and ensuring compliance with relevant financial laws. In terms of management, the Business Manager will support the Board and Chief Executive in their operational and strategic work, manage external service providers like IT and HR services, and maintain strong relationships with partners and stakeholders.

The role also involves planning and organizing resources to support the charity's development, enhancing its reputation, and staying updated on relevant laws, particularly in finance, charity governance, and employment law.

Role overview: 

A pivotal senior position within the Legacy and In Memory Fundraising team, this role works closely with the Head of Legacy and In Memory Fundraising to lead key fundraising initiatives and stewardship efforts. Responsibilities include overseeing recruitment, staff development, and performance management, as well as contributing to strategic planning and budget oversight. The role also leads the delivery of a multi-channel legacy marketing programme and ensures external suppliers meet agreed service levels. The role will line manage two team members, take on broader leadership responsibilities within the department, and actively promote legacy giving across the organisation.

Key Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with the Head of Legacy and In Memory Fundraising to shape and implement the overarching strategy and budget, with a key focus on expanding the supporter pipeline, increasing In Memory donations, and safeguarding long-term Legacy income.
• Offer expert advice and strategic input to design integrated, personalised supporter journeys that prioritise exceptional supporter experiences, drawing on industry best practices and working closely with internal teams and external agency partners.
• Lead the planning and delivery of multi-channel Legacy and In Memory fundraising campaigns—across acquisition and stewardship—including DRTV, press, print, and digital; monitor performance and report progress against defined KPIs and milestones.
  
  
  Person Specification:
• Deep expertise in all areas of Legacy and In-Memory fundraising, underpinned by strong knowledge and hands-on experience within the sector 
• Extensive track record of successfully managing multiple campaigns across various channels—meeting and exceeding revenue targets, crafting compelling copy, overseeing third-party suppliers, and using data insights effectively, all while ensuring full regulatory and compliance adherence
• Demonstrated success in strategic planning, execution, and management of fundraising strategies 
• Proven excellence as a highly organised and effective project manager, capable of leading multiple complex projects simultaneously while prioritising workload efficiently 
• Strong financial management capabilities, including experience in budget management, creating spending plans, and delivering accurate financial reporting 
• Outstanding leadership and team management skills, with a track record of building and leading high-performing teams, as well as effectively managing external partners such as media and digital agencies, and internal service teams 
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence senior stakeholders and foster strong, collaborative relationships across all organisational levels

In this vital role, you’ll ensure legacy gifts are processed efficiently and accurately, securing the best possible financial outcomes for the charity whilst safeguarding our reputation. Working closely with colleagues in Finance and Legal, you’ll help to maintain a robust and reliable income stream that directly supports our life-saving work across communities.

About You

• Demonstrable experience within a related role in Charity Legacy or Estate Administration
• Demonstrable experience of using databases such as Dynamics 365 and Microsoft applications
• Evidence of effective relationship management with a range of external stakeholders including solicitors, lay executors and auditors
• Experienced user of First Class

About the Role

• Manage and maximise legacy income by overseeing cases, monitoring legal/admin costs, and ensuring compliance with policy and best practice.
• Act as the main point of contact for solicitors, executors, supporters, and third-party suppliers to maintain strong relationships and communication.
• Lead on complex and high-value cases, offering expert advice on probate, tax, and legal matters while escalating as needed.
• Maintain accurate records and reporting, working with Finance and Database teams to ensure audit compliance and effective forecasting.
• Drive continuous improvement by updating legacy processes, advising on policy changes, and supporting recognition programmes for legacy donors.
