The RSA is the global community for regional and urban research, development and policy. As a learned society for regional studies, it provides an authoritative voice for researchers, students and practitioners from disciplines including economics, geography, political science, planning, urban sociology, transport planning and other fields. The RSA delivers its charitable aims through knowledge exchange and policy engagement activities, its portfolio of journals and publications, its programme of conferences and events and its worldwide territorial and research networks. As a key role withint the RSA identifying and cultivating business development and income generation opportunities, their work will make a demonstrable contribution to the sustainable financial growth of the Association.
The post holder will work closely with colleagues, volunteers and trustees to foster relationships, partnerships and collaborations with individuals, networks and organisations across the regional and urban research, practice and policy sectors, in line with the Association’s objectives, priorities and values.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Engagement leadership
· Advocate for the RSA and for the importance of regional research, complementing the Chief Executive, Chair and President in their respective advocacy roles.
· Proactively nurture and sustain partnerships and relationships with individuals, networks and organisations across the regional and urban research, practice and policy sectors.
· Engage effectively at all levels including with senior figures and decision-makers in government and non-governmental organisations within the UK, European Union and internationally.
· Ensure engagements effectively promote knowledge and appreciation of the RSA and regional research, leading to demonstrable influence on regional policy and practice.
· Enable the RSA to seize engagement and partnership opportunities by maintaining knowledge of trends and developments across the sector.
2. Partnership development
· Play a lead role in identifying, cultivating, securing and managing effective and impactful partnerships with networks, organisations and consortia within and beyond the regional and urban research, practice and policy sectors.
· Working closely with the Chief Executive, scope and develop new opportunities for partnerships, collaborations, joint projects and sponsorships by preparing business cases, funding proposals, project bids and supporting documentation.
· Ensure partnerships are developed in line with strategic objectives, add value to the work of the Association and maintain an appropriate balance between financial performance, organisational values and charitable objects.
· Where appropriate, lead and manage projects and partnerships, onboarding operations and delivery teams and ensuring initiatives meet key performance indicators.
3. Membership development
· Engage with RSA members, prospective members, partners and stakeholders, understanding what they value and how the Association can best support them.
· Working closely with the Chief Executive and Membership, Communications and IT Manager, utilise market and member insights to develop the membership proposition in order to maintain the value and relevance of the RSA to regional and urban researchers, practitioners and policymakers.
· Work collaboratively with colleagues to implement and monitor effective marketing and communication campaigns to recruit and retain organisational and individual members.
· Working closely with the Membership, Communications and IT Manager, develop the work of RSA territorial networks by forging productive relationships with network leaders, supporting international membership development and extending the reach and impact of networks on the membership and wider community.
4. Organisational and strategic leadership
· As part of the RSA management team, contribute to the RSA’s overall operations, planning and strategic and business development.
· Working with the management team, analyse market intelligence and stakeholder feedback to identify and develop valuable and sustainable services for member and others.
· Attend RSA and RSA Europe Board meetings as required, preparing and presenting appropriate reports on activity performance and progress.
· Deputise for the Chief Executive as required and be prepared to step up as Acting Chief Executive should the circumstances require it and the Board request it.
GENERAL DUTIES
· Contribute to the effective management of finances, suppliers and contractors, budgets and risks in line with internal controls and external regulatory and legal compliance.
· Line manage reporting staff and support their performance and personal development.
· Work closely with cross-functional teams, trustees and volunteers, building effective relationships to ensure alignment and support for development initiatives.
· Support a culture of continuous improvement by providing feedback from members and partners and suggestions for improvements or new products and services.
· Contribute to RSA communications, publications and events activity as required.
· Contribute to working groups and other project work as required, including producing papers and reports.
· Make full use of all information and communication technologies to meet the requirements of the role and to promote organisational effectiveness.
· Undertake national and international travel as required, supporting events, partnerships and collaborations.
· Any other duties as may reasonably be required within the remit of this post.
The Association operates internationally, and some travel and overnight stays of varying lengths will be expected. Occasionally, travel and work may fall outside Monday to Friday working and there is no additional remuneration available as this is reflected in the salary.

In this role, you will pro-actively deliver and support SPANA communications and campaigns projects and activities. Your work will range from ensuring working animals are represented in the global news agenda, to raising awareness of organisational and income- generating activities, in line with our strategy.
Media and PR
- Deliver local, national and international PR (both online and offline), supporting awareness-raising, global programmes, emergency, fundraising and advocacy activities and campaigns.
- Implement media plans in line with the global fundraising, marketing and communications strategy and in support of communications KPIs.
- Produce and distribute press releases, articles, statements, case studies, Q&A sheets, position statements, briefings, press packs and other media materials.
- Identify opportunities for, and support the development of, appropriate content (video, imagery etc) for media release.
- Act as a first point of contact for media enquiries, providing out-of-hours media cover as required, including weekends.
- Oversee the production of video news releases or other content for broadcasters and digital media, assisting and supporting the content team in editing footage
- Scan the media and the internet daily for opportunities for comment, drafting responses as appropriate.
- Manage the media centre section of the SPANA website.
- Communications and campaigns
- Work with the Communications and Campaigns team and colleagues to plan and implement strategic communications designed to grow awareness and understanding of the charity’s work and support income generation activities.
- Work with Global Programmes staff to identify and develop potential stories of geopolitical
- Support the development of SPANA’s work with high-profile public figures, including celebrities and influencers, liaising with individuals and and their agents to support communications objectives.
- Support SPANA’s campaigning (lobbying and influence) work at meetings with partners and other stakeholders and identify media opportunities around advocacy work.
Brand and content
- Work with Communications Manager on SPANA publications, including copy for marketing materials, the website and internal communications.
- Work with the Senior Content Officer, in-country teams and freelancers, to develop, catalogue and select content (photography, video, case studies).
- Oversee the production of promotional materials as required.
- Proof copy and review materials against brand guidelines on behalf of staff from across the charity.

Knowledge, Training and Qualifications
- Educated to degree level or equivalent or with comparable press, journalistic or communications on-the-job experience.
- Knowledge of charity/not-for-profit communications.
- Excellent knowledge of the UK media environment, including print, broadcast and digital.
- An understanding international development issues, the importance of working animals and livestock in that context, and the international agencies and NGOs working in this field.
- Professional qualifications and training in communications or journalism (desirable).
Experience
- Experience of working in a busy press or communications environment, including interacting with national media.
- Expertise in managing both reactive and proactive media relations.
- An experienced writer, with the ability to produce engaging, persuasive copy that is tailored to the needs of particular audiences.
- Experience of proofreading to check for spelling/grammar and adherence to the SPANA brand and style guide.
- Experience of digital communications, including writing for the web.
- Experience of media contacts databases, such as Gorkana/Cision.
- Experience of cataloguing and logging content and editing videos particularly for social media (desirable)

Girls Not Brides is the only global organisation uniquely focused on creating and sustaining a worldwide movement to end child, early and forced marriage and unions (CEFMU) and ensuring that this movement leads to tangible change for the girls at risk or affected by the practice. INTRODUCTION TO THE ROLE
This role sits within the global communications team – part of the External Engagement directorate – at Girls Not Brides and will report to the Communications Manager. This position will play a pivotal role in supporting the organisation to reach strategic audiences, shaping conversations around ending child marriage, and positioning Girls Not Brides and our members as thought leaders. This role will shape our engagement with media as key strategic influencers and partners to advance the ending child marriage agenda, with a focus on global and cross-regional outlets.
The successful candidate will work closely with internal teams to identify opportunities to engage media in order to influence powerholders and to shape the global and cross-regional narrative around child marriage. The candidate will be responsible for ensuring timely response to breaking news, ensuring adherence to internal procedures and processes.

£32,600 rising on an annual incremental basis. Girls Not Brides also offers a generous 10% pension.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Media engagement and storytelling (60%)
● Develop and implement media plans aligned to communications, external engagement, and secretariat strategy.
● Manage Girls Not Brides’ press office function and media inbox, managing and coordinating day-to-day media enquiries and responding to requests in coordination with internal teams.
● Build and maintain relationships with journalists and media contacts for global and regional media outlets.
● Work with internal colleagues, including in regional teams, to proactively identify opportunities for media engagement linked to key events, moments, and learning outputs.

The Watercress and Winterbournes Landscape Partnership is a National Lottery Heritage Funded Scheme that focuses on the headwaters of two of the UK’s most iconic chalk rivers, the Test and the Itchen. This is an area of distinctive chalk stream habitats and winterbournes which supports a rich diversity of wildlife.
However, a wide range of factors threaten the character and quality of this chalk stream landscape. Working with a wide range of organisations and individuals, the scheme focuses on improving the resilience of their chalk streams and celebrating their unique qualities through key partnerships and community action. The scheme has been underway now for 4 years and has 16 months remaining.
This role sits within the Watercress and Winterbournes project team and will work closely with the team and with colleagues from across the Trust and the partnership. The post will be responsible for co-ordinating and delivering the communications for the whole scheme for our planned activities, ensuring that they are using the best methods to reach the required audiences.
The post will also co-ordinate Scheme events and will directly deliver two key people-engagement projects including:
Hidden Treasure Trails – co-ordination of the delivery of animated wildlife trails and associated interpretation.
Septic Smart project – co-ordination of messaging about septic tanks and their impact on chalk streams to targeted communities.

- A qualification in marketing or a related subject, or two years’ experience in a marketing or communications role (this can include voluntary work).
- Excellent written communication skills, with experience of writing engaging copy for different audiences, channels and functions.
- Experience of using Canva and/or software packages to create print materials, as well as digital and video content.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and personal integrity.
- Excellent administrative skills.
- Meticulous attention to detail.
- Excellent IT skills, including experience of using the Microsoft Office suite.
- A full UK driving license and access to a car.
Desirable knowledge, skills and experience
- Experience of using social media in a professional environment.
- Experience of using Salesforce or another CRM system.
- Experience of using WordPress or another website management system.
- Experience of supporting the planning and delivery of events and/or campaigns.
- Experience of using marketing analytics tools, such as Google Analytics.
- Understanding of the charity sector.
Interviews
- We aim to hold interviews in the weeks commencing 3 February and 10 February 2025.
- Interviews may be held remotely or in person, depending on circumstances.
