Business Development at Refugee Council
We operate two main service departments supporting refugees (resettlement, employment, and integration) and people seeking asylum (casework, therapeutic support, and social support for adults and children. We also have a smaller Practice Development team supporting Refugee Community Organisations and frontline practitioners to develop their skills and capacity to meet the needs of people seeking asylum and refugees. Our Business Development team sits within our Fundraising and External Affairs team and works closely with our services directorate.
The purpose of this role is to bolster the resource of our Business Development team in order to build the foundations for statutory income generation for Refugee Council in the immediate term and for the future. The key elements of the role are to:
- Identify the appropriate statutory commissioners to liaise with when presenting our service models. This is a time intensive task that requires research via different platforms and networks (e.g. LinkedIn, web searches, internal colleague contacts, and related market insights).
- Assess feedback and insights following engagement with commissioners, identify patterns and opportunities, and contribute towards Business Development’s funder engagement and fundraising strategy.
- Prepare background documents, such as up-to-date context statements and summaries, for use in proposals, tenders, service models, and related Business Development products. Lead on various administrative tasks to support the function of the Business Development team, such as completing selection questionnaires for competitive tenders.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Research:
- Our Business Development Officer will lead the researching and mapping statutory commissioners, service delivery partners, and providers to produce a clear picture of service delivery landscape, commissioner interests, and commissioning trends to inform business development strategies across our geographical hub areas.
- They will identify appropriate and influential statutory commissioners (via internal colleagues, LinkedIn, online searches, and related sources) for Business Development colleagues to contact. Through their detailed research they will build an in-depth understanding of commissioner roles and remit, interests, and priority areas of work that will help us influence statutory commissioners.
- They will lead on developing and maintaining content-rich, in depth evidence-based summaries on clients’ and commissioners’ evolving needs for use in proposals, tenders, service models, and strategy documents. These summaries will be highly persuasive and enable to team to influence funders. They will be required to analyse complex data and evidence presenting asylum and refugee trends and figures as well as statutory funding available across a range of sources.
Contract: Fixed term until 31/10/2025.
Hours: Full-time, 35 hours per week (would be open to part time working of 28 hours for the right candidate).

About the role
Working in partnership with our NHS colleagues, Solent Mind are providing Peer Support from within Community Mental Health Teams across Southampton.
This roles includes:
- Working with community mental health team colleagues to identify service users that may benefit from peer support and plan work accordingly in a collaborative, person-centred way, including on entry and discharge to/from the service.
- Working with people in one to one and group settings, including managing your own caseload of service users, to support their recovery and build support networks, whilst supervising peers and volunteers and attending appropriate meetings
- Supporting people to develop and use a range of skills and techniques to help their wellbeing.
Hours: 18.5 hours per week (job share).

Practical details:
We are offering an initial six-month, remote contract based in Belgium or the UK, with the possibility of full-time employment following a satisfactory review. The salary is based on a gross annual salary of £25,000 in the UK, or €35,000 (including benefits) in Belgium. Candidates should be prepared to work 38 hours a week, with flexibility to accommodate different time zones. You will receive 25 days annual leave, plus one additional day per year worked. This job is to work as an advisor to Neurodiverse Connection. The person in this job will help us hear from other people with a learning disability. The project is to meet and hear from people who have been in mental health hospitals. We will be finding out about what went well and what could have been better.
We want to make sure that our information, conversations and activities are easy to understand for people with a learning disability. You’ll be helping us to get it right.
Sometimes you will be helping us write questions, sometimes you will be meeting people in hospital to find out about their experience. Sometimes you might come to workshops to help us run them well. We also want your help to think about what people tell us. You will help us tell people what we have found out in a way that is easy to understand.
We really want to hear from some people who don’t often get the chance to say what they think. We will be meeting with some people to do workshops and activities. We will be meeting other people online. You can work with us to help us make this interesting and easy to understand for people with a learning disability.
The work time is not fixed for this job and working days will change across the month. The person will be paid for half a day each week. This will mean that the person might work a full day one week and not work the next week, but that payment will always be the same at the end of each month. We will agree working days and time with the person.

You will:
• Demonstrate your experience of delivering successful community fundraising including recruiting, supporting and motivating volunteer groups and individuals, and community fundraising supporters.
• Have excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate with a variety of audiences via a variety of methods (email, phone, in person, etc) with outstanding presentation, interpersonal and networking skills.
• Be able to create and maintain effective working relationships with people at all levels including a variety of stakeholders internal and external with positive financial outcomes.
• Work to targets, plans and budgets, having strong financial acumen including budget setting, forecasting and reporting against targets

Coram Voice is a leading children’s rights organisation. We champion the rights of children. We get young voices heard in decisions that matter to them and work to improve the lives of children in care, care leavers and others who depend upon the help of the state.
Our Advocacy services offer direct support to children and young people in care, those in need, those in custody, care leavers, and those with mental health needs. Advocates across the country help ensure these young individuals have a voice in decisions about their lives. This support can be provided via a telephone helpline or through one-on-one advocacy, such as assisting a child at a review meeting or helping them file a complaint about their care. Coram Voice delivers visiting advocacy services to secure units nationwide, including Secure Training Centres, Juvenile Young Offender Institutions, psychiatric hospitals, residential special schools, and children’s homes.
About the Secure Unit:
The Secure Home accommodates up to 24 children, divided between two areas: 16 in the main home, which includes an educational unit, and a separate home for up to 8 young people. The children in this home require a secure placement for their protection and rehabilitation, and our role is to ensure that their rights are respected at every stage of their care.
About the Role:
As a Children’s Advocate, you will be an essential independent voice for the children in this secure home. You will regularly visit the home, meet with the children, and ensure their voices are heard in the decisions that affect their lives. Your advocacy will be pivotal in promoting their rights, safeguarding their well-being, and ensuring that their concerns and wishes are respected within the care planning process.
Key Responsibilities:
- Build trusting relationships with the children, creating an open and safe environment for them to voice their concerns.
- Conduct regular visits to the secure home to meet with the children, ensuring they feel safe and supported in expressing their views.
- Represent children’s interests ensuring their voices are heard in decisions about their care, treatment, and rehabilitation.
- Advocate for the Childrens rights, ensuring they understand their entitlements and are fully informed about decisions affecting them.
- Collaborate with care staff, social workers, youth offending team workers and other professionals to ensure a holistic approach to safeguarding and supporting each young person, as directed by the wishes of the child.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Contribute to the design and delivery of research
Data analysis will vary from routine coding and mapping to descriptive statistics and advanced approaches including correlation analysis, ANOVAs and regression analysis. In preparing data, the Researcher will identify the need for clarifications and additional information on the data, and will clearly communicate these queries. The Researcher will undertake this work in strict compliance with the Charity’s policies on data security and confidentiality.
2. Collaborate with colleagues
The Researcher will normally work alongside the Senior Researcher (Quantitative), who will typically lead on the quantitative aspect of research projects and will allocate responsibilities to the Researcher. The Researcher will be expected to undertake these with relatively little guidance and share their findings with the research team, working alongside colleagues to synthesise qualitative and quantitative findings and understand how findings from various strands of research address key research questions.
3. Communicate research findings
The Researcher will clearly present their specific outputs to the Senior Researcher and/or other colleagues through concise informal reports. They will contribute verbally to internal meetings of the research team. The Researcher may contribute to drafting external reports (or sections of reports), presenting findings in a style accessible to a range of audiences.
4. Operational contributions
There will also be other more operational tasks associated with the role, working in collaboration with colleagues in the Charity. These are likely to include administrative tasks for meetings and events; communications with stakeholders, including by phone and email; copywriting; and website contributions.
SKILLS, UNDERSTANDING AND EXPERIENCE
We seek candidates with the following attributes:
Quantitative research
- Have experience in advanced statistical approaches including, for example, ANOVA, and non-parametric approaches
- Understand how these are used to explore social equality issues and are aware of recent published work in this area
- Have substantial experience of identifying the most appropriate approach to explore specific research questions within the context of the data available and the organisation(s) involved
- Have experience of working with large datasets that were not generated for research purposes and require extensive mapping and manipulation
- Are happy to undertake routine tasks, such as checking and cleaning datasets; matching and coding of datasets; and general descriptive statistics
- Pay uncompromising attention to accuracy and detail; and are skilled in identifying data challenges and limitations early in the process wherever possible
