Communication Director Jobs
We are seeking an experienced Head of Operations and Finance to oversee our systems and procedures and ensure good operating practice and overall organisational health. The Head of Operations and Finance role would suit someone with a background in operations, finance, HR, governance and processes.
The cause
New Local is a think tank and network working to transform public services and empower communities.
At the heart of our work is ‘community power’ - the principle that communities themselves have strong insights into their own circumstances and should be able to participate in shaping the places they live in and the services they use. We believe that active, empowered communities should be at the heart of a wider shift towards place-based public services and a system focused on prevention, which can lead to better outcomes and a more sustainable system for all.
We publish research, lead peer learning within our network of 50-plus local authorities, influence government and work directly with public sector organisations. We support local practice and make connections with national policy, catalysing innovation and new ways of working in the context of rising demand, constrained funding and declining trust.
The role
Over the last year, we’ve seen our community power message really begin to take hold. At the same time, we’re developing as an organisation, so it has never been more important to have strong organisational foundations in place to support our wide-ranging activity and projects. We are looking for an experienced Head of Operations and Finance who can help us do this.
Your job will include:
- Operational management: ensuring effective systems, administration and procedures are in place to enable the smooth day-to-day running of the organisation.
- Financial management: implementing robust financial systems and playing a key role in managing budgets, forecasting and reporting.
- HR, organisational policies and recruitment: consulting with external professionals to ensure comprehensive processes are in place and compliant to support our activities.
- Governance management: working closely with the Chair and CEO to ensure good board practice.
- Strategic leadership: actively contributing to shaping the strategic direction of the organisation.
- Business development: working collaboratively with and supporting the team to further our commercial practice.
- And more... As part of a small, friendly and informal organisation you'll have the opportunity to participate in other activities and support the wider development and delivery of New Local’s vision and strategy.
Location: New Local operates a highly flexible approach to work location and welcomes applications from across the UK.
Our ideal candidate will be:
- A warm connector, someone who is able to build strong, supportive relationships with individuals and teams inside and outside the organisation.
- An excellent communicator, who can bring people together around a topic – verbally and in writing about the work they are delivering, and the tasks they are undertaking.
- A keen planner, whose strategic understanding, project management skills and attention-to-detail are able to keep projects timely and impactful.
- Entrepreneurial, someone who likes new opportunities and is comfortable supporting business development.
- Someone who is able to prioritise, who is comfortable working across a variety of projects and to different deadlines.
- Driven by achieving positive change, both in terms of improving our own work and achieving New Local’s broader political and societal goals.
- A collaborative and supportive colleague, able to work in a highly creative environment that encourages excellence from all members of the team.
The organisation
New Local was founded in 1996. There is currently a team of 15 staff at New Local. New Local operates a ‘work anywhere’ policy but provides office space in London for those who require it.
We make every effort to live up to our four core values of being purposeful (i.e. focused on community power), adventurous, supportive towards colleagues and partners, and delivering excellence.
In addition to the advertised salary, we offer:
- A minimum of 27 days’ holiday a year and 10 days holiday over Christmas/New Year
- Flexible working arrangements
- Family friendly leave
- Health insurance and employee assistance scheme

Use your strategic leadership skills to serve a small and highly respected charity growing in impact and influence.
The Nehemiah Project provides a home and support for vulnerable men with a history of addiction across a network of 5 houses in South London.
In houses of 6-8 men and nurtured by the support of their peers and the care of dedicated staff our residents go through a 12-week programme reviewing their lives. Our holistic approach enables these men to break the cycle of addiction and offending and provides the life-changing support required to secure a new future. Inspired by the Christian faith we believe that anyone can change their life and this underpins all our work.
From the testimony of many lives transformed we know that our model works. The national average for remaining abstinent for 1 year is 30%, at the Nehemiah Project 74% of our residents remain abstinent. Nearly 50% of released prisoners reoffend within 12 months and for London prisons this figure increases to 60%. At The Nehemiah Project as far as we know only 5% of the men we have worked with in the last 5 years have reoffended. Covid has had a significant effect on The Nehemiah Project but also across the sector and particularly by those working with men released from prison.
We have doubled in scale over the last 7 years. With a model that works and a reputation for excellence in the sector and with a wide range of community leaders we are well positioned to grow in scale and influence.
After a highly successful period as Chief Executive Dr John Patience will retire from his position at Nehemiah later in 2025. We are seeking a successor to build on his good work and join a highly engaged and passionate group of trustees and staff to help lead an organisation that continues to grow in impact and influence.
You will have an enthusiasm for the cause and for seeing lives transformed, a Christian faith, and will bring strategic insight, a natural ability to build strong relationships, excellent communication skills. Experience of working in the not-for-profit sector and knowledge of issues related to addictions, rehabilitation and the criminal justice system are all desirable but not essential.
Please note that this role has an Occupational Requirement to be a committed Christian as permitted under Schedule 9, Part 1, of the Equality Act 2010.
To be a centre of excellence for rehabilitating men from crime and addiction through the transformation of their lives

With too many men harmed and too few cures available, we’re driven to deliver a future where men’s lives are not limited by prostate cancer. We invest in innovative ideas to advance our understanding, improve diagnostic approaches and develop better treatments.
We’re seeking two proactive and knowledgeable Research Impact and Engagement Managers to join our Research Directorate. In this role, you’ll support the Head of Research Impact and Engagement as part of the Research Impact and Engagement Team, driving the use and visibility of our funded research to showcase the success of our investments and strengthen connections within the prostate cancer research community.
You’ll oversee 50% of our larger and more complex completed research grants, acting as the primary contact to evaluate their progress and potential impact. You’ll also lead high-profile networking events and develop innovative strategies to inspire researchers to submit groundbreaking proposals that align with our mission of ensuring no man’s life is limited by prostate cancer.
A key focus of your role will be implementing strategies to maximise engagement with the research community, enhance the visibility of our funded work, and foster collaborations. Working closely with the research funding team and other departments, you’ll ensure alignment with organisational goals and promote knowledge exchange within the research ecosystem.
You’ll mentor junior team members and apply your research experience to track and accelerate the outcomes and impact of our funded projects.
This is an opportunity to play a key role in transforming prostate cancer research, driving innovation, and making a lasting difference for men affected by the disease.
What we want from you
Your role is vital to the charity, ensuring research delivers tangible benefits for men affected by prostate cancer—a key focus of our strategy.
To succeed, you’ll need a strong scientific foundation, supported by a degree in biomedical science (or a related field) and research experience. You must be comfortable understanding complex scientific information from reports, publications, and presentations and be skilled at translating this into clear, engaging content for diverse audiences, including researchers, colleagues, and men and their families affected by prostate cancer.
Strong strategic thinking is crucial for developing innovative ways to engage researchers and foster collaboration. Exceptional organisational skills are essential to manage and deliver high-profile research events effectively. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills will enable you to craft compelling case studies, conduct insightful interviews with researchers, and showcase funded projects through social media.
Leadership and mentoring abilities are also key, as you’ll guide and support junior team members to achieve high standards and deliver impactful outcomes. A proactive, solutions-focused mindset will drive you to explore new ideas, identify opportunities, and tackle challenges, ensuring meaningful contributions to our mission.
We encourage applications from candidates who may not completely fit the job description as we are fully committed to help staff develop and progress in their role.
