About the role
We are seeking a PR and Communications Manager to join our ambitious team. We know that incredible work goes on behind the scenes at Smart Works, and that what we do meaningfully helps to change the lives of thousands of women every year. But we need you to help us shout from the rooftops about our service and impact, actively seeking media opportunities and press coverage, to increase our public profile. Your work will make a real difference – spreading the Smart Works message not only to the women we exist to support, but fundraisers, referral partners, volunteers and the public too.
Duties and responsibilities
- You will amplify and lead existing integrated campaigns, including the Smart Works Unemployment Index, International Women’s Day and International Day of the Girl. With the support of the Digital Marketing Manager, Graphic Design Manager and Digital Communications Manager, you’ll ensure our campaigns are widely noticed and talked about, in the press, online and local community.
- You will develop and manage media opportunities (proactive and reactive), including owning our press office, writing and distributing press releases, building relationships with journalists, tracking coverage, and briefing spokespeople.
- You will lead and develop our Client Champions programme and case studies, ensuring the client remains central to the charity’s external voice, proactively seeking opportunities to tell their stories to encourage support/donations from external communities, and managing any nationwide communication moments/events.
- You will support our engagement with Patrons and Ambassadors, managing relationships where appropriate and seeking new advocates who can authentically help tell our story, to reach more people.
- You will lead the coordination of our internal communications calendar and reporting, working with internal stakeholders across Partnerships, Operations and our local centres to ensure that key moments are recognised, with support at a national level where appropriate.
- You will support with other team tasks, such as social media scheduling and content creation.

The successful candidate will report to our Director of Communications and Marketing. The role has no line management responsibility but will work closely with colleagues – including our Digital Marketing Manager, Digital Communications Manager and Graphic Design Manager – so you should be used to collaborating with others, in a dynamic environment.

- Proven experience in a PR, communications, or similar role, ideally within the charity.
- Demonstrable success in securing media coverage, developing and delivering PR plans, managing relationships, and working with ambassadors.
- Outstanding writing, editing and proofreading skills with excellent attention to detail, including when working with limited resource and/or under pressure.
- Ability to craft compelling stories, press releases and pitches.
- Strong relationship-building skills with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels.
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage and take responsibility for own workload, handle multiple priorities and to work independently.
- Both strategic and operational thinker.
- Excellent, proven project management and planning skills.

About the Role
We are now recruiting for an experienced Director of Operations to play a crucial role in guiding our driven and committed team as we shift our culture and infrastructure, upholding our vision, mission, principles, and values.
The post holder will work with colleagues to develop, implement and review Hibiscus’s strategy and plans, particularly as they impact our operating and finance models. They will be responsible for developing and monitoring the annual business plan, reporting progress and providing reliable structural, financial and people management. They will support the CEO in building and instilling a sense of unity and purpose into the work of the organisation, and represent the operational work to the Board. They will be responsible for the efficient running of operations and central functions, conducting risk assessments, monitoring performance and reviewing procedures, with a particular focus on overseeing the effective financial management of the organisation.
The successful candidate will be responsible for financial planning and producing financial budgets for the organisation, alongside monitoring projects from start to finish, preparing costings for funding applications, agreeing contracts and grant terms, monitoring deliverables and co-ordinating timely reporting. They will oversee the production of quarterly management accounts and yearly finance audits, and communicate the financial landscape of the organisation to the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and Board. The Director of Operations will play a key role in risk and compliance, with a focus on data, safeguarding, policies and procedures, and legal and statutory requirements. They will work to increase the effectiveness of our operations, whilst supporting and contributing to the fundraising efforts of the organisation. A key element of the role will be to work to integrate our workplace culture into HR processes and procedures, modelling a fair and open management approach that ensures trusted relationships are embedded throughout the organisation.

About you

Global Communications Director

At Public Law Project (PLP), we ensure that public law principles, including the rule of law and human rights, are protected and advanced, with the experiences of those most marginalised in society in mind.
PLP plays a leading role fighting some of the most egregious public law violations of our day. We have worked on issues including the prorogation, the Rwanda policy, the attempt to go back on the promises made to the Windrush generation, and the near total collapse of legal aid, and so much more. Yet you may never have heard of us. We are looking for a Communications and Engagement Director to help us change that.
With a new government in place, this is an exciting time to raise the profile of PLP and our mission. We are developing a new strategy which we expect to crystalise our role countering the rise of the far right, advancing public law into new areas such as preventing Government misuse of AI, and continuing to stand with the most marginalised in society. Your role will be critical in ensuring our voice has impact and we have the resources to implement our strategy.
You will develop and oversee a new organisational communications plan, focusing on brand-building, and media outreach. Reporting to the CEO directly, you will be a key member of the Senior Leadership Team and work closely with the Board and other stakeholders to enhance PLP’s impact and reputation, as well as guide and implement our strategy.
Leading the Communications and Engagement team, you will direct all external communications, provide thought leadership for PLP events, oversee grant fundraising efforts and relaunch fundraising from philanthropic individuals. You will be an excellent manager providing empowering leadership for members of your team and maintaining and inclusive work culture that promotes staff wellbeing. You will also be great at working with other departments including our casework, research and policy teams.
This is a permanent, open to full time and part time applications of at least four days per week. PLP offers flexible working from day one, a wide-ranging wellbeing programme, 25 days annual leave (plus festive period closure), and 10% employer pension after 12 months.
