About the role

The Exchange is looking for an enthusiastic and hard-working Sales Assistant with a flair for customer service, and a passion for plants, craft and people. This is an exciting new opportunity to help support our Retail Manager in establishing The Garden Room as a vibrant, successful and welcoming space for retail, selling homeware and gifts; craft and garden supplies and tools; plants and plant care products; and some fashion, fragrance and cosmetics. The Garden Room acts as the main entrance into The Exchange, and so the Sales Assistant will be expected to be able to talk confidently about the wider organisation and its work. The space is also used for workshops, focusing on the interconnection between craft and gardens.

Principle Duties:

Please note: the ‘principal duties and responsibilities’ outlined below are not exhaustive. Other tasks and duties consistent with the role may be assigned.

• Sales: Maximise sales within our retail space, The Garden Room, by assisting with the day-to-day running of the shop, ensuring it is always well presented, welcoming and secure.
• Customer Service: Provide exceptional service to visitors and customers, providing information about The Garden Room and our retail offering as well as the organisation, its ethos, our programme and events.
• Plant Care: Basic care of the plants within The Garden Room and elsewhere in The Exchange.
• Ambassador: Be a positive ambassador of The Exchange, supporting the organisation and its work within the community.

Responsibilities:

• Provide excellent customer service in The Garden Room, answering queries and giving general assistance in a warm and friendly manner to ensure a positive visitor/customer experience, and to encourage repeat visits.
• Talk confidently about the wider work of The Exchange, including our history, ethos and our events/programme.
• Ensure the smooth operational running of The Garden Room.
• Till and cash handling, processing transactions on the till system, packaging and gift wrapping any purchases as required.
• Process online purchases by selecting stock, packing for postage and arranging dispatch.
• Inform customers about stock availability and gathering product feedback.
• Respond to email and in-person queries from customers in a timely and professional manner.
• Occasionally serve drinks and snacks from The Garden Room where we sell a small selection of chilled bottled and canned drinks for consumption on The Exchange premises. 
• Manage stock levels, preventing theft, and keeping the store clean and organised.
• Ensure that available stock is visible and is visually appealing.
• Maintain stock levels and visual standards of the drinks and snacks available to purchase from The Garden Room.
• Provide basic care instructions to customers purchasing plants.
• Operate within rigorous H&S and security frameworks, including taking responsibility for opening and closing tills, and final retail space checks.
• Assist with general housekeeping duties as assigned.

Following their sons’ diagnosis of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), Emily Reuben and Alex Johnson founded Duchenne UK in 2012. We are an ambitious, dynamic and impactful charity. 

DMD is a devastating progressive condition diagnosed in early childhood which causes all the muscles in the body to gradually weaken. There are currently only very limited treatment options for DMD, so Emily and Alex set up Duchenne UK to change this. 

Since 2012, we have raised more than £27 million to end the devastating impact of DMD.  We fund ground-breaking scientific research to find effective treatments. We’ve developed the infrastructure of DMD clinical trial delivery in the UK. We engage industry and regulators to accelerate access to treatments. And we’re here to support every family affected and ensure that they receive the best possible care. We aim not only to improve quality of live but stop the disease in its tracks. We’re doing it faster too, because this generation of patients can’t wait.

Alex and Emily were awarded OBEs in The King’s Birthday Honours List in 2023 in recognition of their services to charity and to people living with DMD. They, and the dedicated and effective team they have built at Duchenne UK, are now at the forefront of this work in the UK.

We have an opportunity to join our team and build on these achievements. We are recruiting for a full-time Fundraising Manager, who will be a key part of our team and play a vital role in helping us achieve our mission.

The successful candidate will be an experienced fundraiser with strong interpersonal and communications skills with the ability to build relationships with a wide variety of individuals. Excellent organisational skills are a must along with being ambitious, driven and passionate about representing Duchenne UK and supporting our mission.

The Fundraising Manager will report to the Director of Fundraising and line manage the Fundraising Assistant. They will work closely the rest of the organisation, including the Communications, Finance and Research Teams as well as having the opportunity to work alongside the CEO and Managing Director.

Job Description

This role plays a key part in advancing the fundraising of Duchenne UK to enable more investment into research, advancing treatments and supporting the DMD community.  A core part of this will be building relationships with key supporters, including our incredible Family and Friends Funds, corporate supporters and community of fundraisers.

You will be central to the development and delivery of key events and campaigns throughout the year to achieve ambitious fundraising targets. You will have budget management responsibilities and provide insight into activities to drive improvements and further success in future years.

The role will contribute to overall fundraising growth; ensuring the guiding engagement and fundraising principles are delivered, and that all fundraising delivers an exceptional and remarkable donor experience to which Duchenne UK prides itself.

Fundraising and business development

• Community
  • Key relationship manager for Duchenne UK Family and Friends Funds, engaging them through fundraising, supporting third party events and providing regular project and charity updates

  • Develop and deepen existing donor relationships, ensuring that the organisation maintains effective communications and good relations with our donors at every level and that they are updated on our work and impact
  • Oversee management of regular giving, including working with the Communications team to promote this type of giving. Provide stewardship to Regular Givers, with support from the Fundraising Assistant.
  • Lead the identification and development of new income sources with the support of the Fundraising team to increase donations, improve the profile of Duchenne UK and enhance our reputation within the donor community; including corporate partnerships, fundraising campaigns, third party activity, challenge events, regular giving and legacy
  • Represent the organisation at meetings with donors and external events

This will play a key role in carrying out a range of general health & safety room checks, cleaning, building maintenance and caretaking tasks. The role will report to and support the Facilities Manager in the delivery of planned, reactive maintenance and cleaning tasks.

The role will ensure a safe, clean and welcoming environment for residents, employees and visitors by providing a repairing, maintenance cleaning service in order to keep the various buildings and grounds to the highest standard, whilst minimising the need for external contractors.

RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES

• To support daily, weekly & monthly planned maintenance tasks as scheduled (fire alarm tests, water temperature recording, emergency lighting tests, etc.).
• Support Customer Services with planned room health & safety checks
• Support the delivery of first line response to reactive maintenance, cleaning and repairs.
• Minor building fabric spot cleaning, repairs, decorating tasks and plumbing repairs.
• Check of plant rooms and boilers for leaks and general condition
• Ensure equipment is well maintained, adequately stored and meets all safety requirements

• Use a range of common hand and power tools to carry out your job as required
• Assist with inspection of the condition of the grounds, building and facilities

Main Responsibilities:

 · To process residents rent and payments received on the housing management system (Pyramid) in order to achieve rent collection and arrears targets.

· Ensure all housing debts are pursued with the resident and local authorities ensuring all actions are recorded and payment plans are agreed with the resident.

· Effectively implement the rent arrears procedure to ensure warnings and eviction notices are served in a timely manner and in accordance with legal procedures

· Pass to Finance colleagues all requests for relevant council tax payments from local authorities

· Ensure receipts from Surrey County Council are correctly allocated between rent accounts and any support element is recorded as Housing Support based on bank payments sent by the Finance team to the housing team. Provide Finance with this information so they can enter onto finance system

· Input bank credits to match bank receipts from finance and posting onto Pyramid (housing management system).

· Work closely with the Head of Finance and support them with the month end reconciliation of receipts and arrears balance

· Lead on Discretionary Housing Payments requests, benefit issues and enquiries with the local authorities

· Maintain accurate rent accounts on the Pyramid housing management system ensuring information is recorded accurately.

· Work closely with the Housing Team and Finance Team on rent and support income management developing good working relations with them.

· Represent the organization in court possessions and evictions where necessary.

· Run monthly rent reports as directed by Head of Housing and Head of Finance

· Work closely with the Finance Officer (income) in relation to any queries about rent charged and payments received.

· Provide cover for the Finance Officer (income) where needed (after training)

· Maintain and submission of pre-card card processes

· Meet with the Head of Finance, Head of Housing and Finance Officer (income) to review housing arrears monthly.

· Ensure processes are followed and systems are updated to support the Key Housing Performance Indicator targets.

· Contribute and represent the organisation in a positive manner in team/management meetings both internally and externally.

· Have knowledge of the external environment in which the YMCA works and keep abreast of key changes particularly around Welfare Reform

· To attend appropriate continuing professional development and training events and be committed to team events.

· Any other duties are required to be performed within the grade and renumeration of the role

Join Public Law Project (PLP) and you’ll be playing a key role in the team that’s currently running the main challenge to the Rwanda policy. PLP’s casework team has successfully challenged the prorogation of Parliament, helped survivors whose assets are controlled by their abuser to access legal aid, and put a stop to the no-notice removal policy affecting people claiming asylum.

You will be supervised by one of our Lead Lawyers, and have the opportunity to collaborate closely with the whole team. The PLP team is friendly, diverse, and inclusive, and you’ll be supported and encouraged to develop your skills as a public law caseworker. This is a fee-earning role, and so is suitable for candidates looking to develop their career. 

You’ll play a crucial supporting role in our casework, taking instructions from clients, drafting correspondence, statements, and instructions, and managing legal aid applications. You’ll perform administrative tasks and be a first point of contact at PLP for prospective clients via phone and email. You’ll be part of a variety of public law cases in PLP’s priority areas – this includes working on immigration, welfare, constitutional, and AI cases.
