The Norwich Printing Museum is looking to recruit a small number (up to six) of new members for its Board of Trustees.

The Museum is one of very few remaining working printing museums in the UK. It was born from a collection of printing machinery, type and bindery equipment gathered by Jarrolds for their own printing museum (which closed in 2019). The Museum is now an independent charitable Trust, run by the Board of Trustees and operated by a team of volunteers (a few of whom are also Trustees). A small working ‘Museum in Residence’ on the Blickling Estate has been operating since 2021 and is due to close in October 2025. The Museum is seeking a permanent home to store and display its collections in Norwich.

Whether you are an experienced museum volunteer or trustee, someone with an interest in conserving and interpreting threatened traditional crafts, an enthusiast for the history and practice of printing, or for the city of Norwich, you will be very welcome to apply to join our Board of Trustees.

• Working with the Board and volunteers to raise funds and publicity for the Museum
• Engaging with other museums and collection-holders in the UK, and with the other charities and administrative bodies which support the Museum
• Working with the Board to update and expand the Museum’s policies and procedures
• Bringing your own ideas and enthusiasms to the running of the Museum

While we welcome applications from across the country, we are particularly seeking Trustees with local connections and knowledge.

Time commitment: The Board of Trustees usually meets monthly throughout the year, currently via Zoom, as well as conducting some ad hoc committee business between meetings, mostly by e-mail. Occasional events and meetings are held in Norwich.

What Trustees receive: As a Trustee you will receive the induction and training  necessary for your role, and the full support of your fellow Trustees. There is no payment for Trusteeship, but traveling and material expenses may be claimed.

The Role of a Trustee

The expectations of a trustee, as a member of the Board, are set out in our governance handbook. If you have not been a trustee before you are also advised to read The Charity Commission publication ‘The Essential Trustee’ which sets out the legal duties, you have as a trustee. However, the key thing is that you really want to make a difference for children and their families at a time when their lives are made challenging by illness or disability and that you think you will enjoy working with others equally passionate about the cause. If you can help us to extend our reach and are willing to learn about the role and the work of the charity, we would love to hear from you and to discuss whether a trustee role might be right for you.

Skills, Experience and Personal Qualities

We are looking for 2 or 3 new trustees to replace specific knowledge skills and experience lost as some of our trustees reach the end of their term. One of the trustees we recruit will be asked to chair our CEDI (Community Equality Diversity and Inclusion) Committee. We are passionate about ensuring that there’s a strong mix on our Board of Trustees with people from varying backgrounds, experiences and skills which will enable us to serve our children and families better if we have a good balance of view and voices on our Board.

At the present time our key priorities are to recruit the following skills and experience:

• Experience of transforming operational service delivery, including through the use of technology
• Experience of delivering through volunteer networks, with understanding of how to engage, motivate and support volunteers.
• Someone who is well networked with media and broadcast relationships and brings skills in marketing, brand development, and commercial income generation

The successful candidate will also demonstrate:

Terms of Appointment

Trustees are appointed to the Board for an initial term of three years, after which they will resign and, if they so desire, offer themselves for re-election for a further three-year term. Re-election will require the unanimous support of other Trustees. Exceptionally the Articles provide for a maximum term for Trustees of 9 years but in practice, unless special circumstances exist, the Board considers that it is appropriate for Trustees to serve a maximum of six years consisting of two consecutive 3-year terms.

The post is not remunerated although expenses incurred in carrying out Board business are payable.

The Board has 4 formal meetings a year plus one strategy day and one development day. We try to make these in person meetings. Sub-Committees meet virtually a few weeks in advance of each formal Board meeting. Trustees are expected to attend all Board meetings and meetings of relevant sub-committees unless in exceptional circumstances.

Synergy Theatre Project is looking to appoint a new trustee to join our Board and chair our Finance, Audit and Risk Committee.

Synergy is an award-winning arts and criminal justice organisation. Key Responsibilities

Strategic

• To assist and advise in the formation of the Charity’s strategy with particular regard to ensuring that the Charity has the resources to deliver their strategic goals.

Financial

• Work with the CEO and Finance & Governance Director to produce and report to the Board of Trustees on management accounts and statutory accounts, as well as other relevant financial matters
• Ensure that the Board receives appropriate budgetary and financial information on the activities of the charity including Annual Accounts
• Ensure that all accounts are prepared and disclosed in the form required by the relevant statutory bodies
• Recommend to the Board appropriate accounting procedures, controls and policies consistent with the scheme of delegation.
• Oversee the appointment of auditors/examiners and review on a regular basis.

Time commitment:

• The appointment will be made initially for three years, the role is eligible for two consecutive terms (six years in total)

• Board meetings are hosted quarterly at Creative Mentor Network’s office in London Victoria (18:00-20:00)

Finance Trustee Responsibilities

• Act as the lead trustee in assisting the board to scrutinise financial reports.

The Friends of Windmill Gardens (FOWG) was set up in 2003 to restore, preserve and enhance Brixton Windmill and Windmill Gardens. We are now a thriving community organisation supporting local residents, milling flour, educating schoolchildren and allowing visitors to experience the 200 year old windmill.  We are a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (1176991).

We’re looking for a new Trustee to lead the fundraising activity for the organisation and support an active and engaged fundraising committee made up of volunteers.  The income for the FOWG is split between grants from heritage and community funders, donations from local people, and private hire fees.  As a Trustee leading on fundraising, you’ll support the continued grant applications made by the fundraising committee, explore new routes for donations and grants, and ensure that the Trustees and committee have the information they need. Our charity is now looking to recruit a trustee with finance expertise to help shape this vital work.

Plans to develop our board

We are specifically seeking a trustee who can take on a lead role on the Board in relation to finance.  As well as the normal duties of a trustee, you would take a specific interest in finance at InFocus.  This will include being the lead trustee for the annual audit and for the budget setting process, and having a detailed knowledge of our funding sources and expenditure through scrutiny of the management accounts.  You would liaise closely with the Director of Operations and attend the Business Affairs Advisory Committee of the Board.  You would also be a member of the Board of our trading company.

You will have financial knowledge from an accountant or finance director role, and preferably a knowledge of charity accounting.  Experience of statutory fees,  local authority commissioning and charitable service provision would be an advantage but are not essential.

The Board meets seven times a year and is also invited to all events and celebrations which is optional.  Trustees are warmly encouraged to attend meetings in person, but if required can attend some meetings online.  Expenses are paid for travel and overnight accommodation can be arranged for those not local to Devon.

As we develop our next strategy, we are deepening our focus on strengthening those who are best placed to drive social justice, building trusting relationships with grant partners and, especially during these challenging times, showing solidarity.

For new trustees, this is a pivotal moment to help shape our future working alongside a committed board, dynamic staff team, and a wide network of grant partners, peer funders and others committed to social justice.

About being a new Trustee

There’s more information in the pack but to give a flavour, being a trustee includes: shaping and approving our vision and strategy, being part of the team that ensures we follow governance best practice, overseeing the funds and budget of the organisation, risk management and making sure we live our values. 

Our trustees bring a range of perspectives and provide expertise alongside their commitment and energy. We work by consensus in a collegiate manner. Meetings are stimulating, instructive and respectful. We are experienced and supportive, and you do not need to have had previous trustee experience to apply. 

We are seeking up to three new trustees to contribute to our mission. In this recruitment round, we are prioritising candidates with lived and learned experience in one or more of the following areas: frontline social justice work, lived experience of social justice issues, the UK immigration system, strategic communications and influencing and progressive grantmaking. The new trustees will also need to demonstrate an ability to work collegiately a commitment to equity, diversity and anti-oppression, and an acceptance of the legal duties of a trustee. We are open to candidates seeking their first board position and support, training and a comprehensive induction will be provided by the Foundation to help new trustees feel confident in the role.

Citizens Advice Wyre Forest is a registered charity operated as a company limited by guarantee.

The Role: The Board of Directors of the Citizens Advice Wyre Forest are also trustees of the charity. To help us grow we need experienced members of the public to join our Board. We are particularly keen to recruit people with a connection, commitment and interest in the Wyre Forest community who have the following skills:

• Knowledge of legal processes

· Strong local networks and connection that could open doors and opportunities for the charity

Board meetings are held 4 - 6 times a year at local venues in Wyre Forest with the potential for further meetings, as decided by the Board.

The Board is responsible for guiding and overseeing the strategy and policies of Citizens Advice Wyre Forest and guides and supports the Chief Officer and their staff.
