Acorns have a network of shops across the West Midlands that generate a substantial level of income to enable us to care for children and their families. Our Furniture Assembly Volunteers support by constructing and taking apart flat pack furniture, beds and other large items of furniture. Full training will be provided for this hands-on position. 

How much time will it take? 

Our shops are open Monday to Saturday (some open on Sundays too), 9am to 5pm. You can volunteer the hours that suit you, but ideally we’ll need you to volunteer for at least 3 hours per week.

UK Reads is looking for passionate individuals to join our team as Volunteer Literacy Workshop Facilitators. As a Workshop Facilitator, you'll have the rewarding role of delivering engaging literacy workshops to children and young people in schools, primarily focusing on the East London area.
 

About us:

Established in 2013, the United Kingdom and Europe World Literacy Foundation have been dedicated to building strong communities through literacy and education. In 2018, UK Reads was introduced to provide literacy support through distributing books and resources nationwide while delivering author-led workshops to children to inspire the next generation of readers who lacked resources and opportunities to develop and excel. Additionally, UK Reads works to facilitate a global pen pal project, inspiring young writers and offering them a platform to connect, fostering cultural awareness and enhancing writing skills.

About the Project:

UK Reads: Literacy Impact East London specifically  focus on children and young people aged 11-18 years. The project is designed to reach young people from diverse, low-income backgrounds and ethnic minorities. We have observed that approximately 85% of our beneficiaries come from low-income families, 10% of our users are students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), reflecting the diverse range of learners we aim to support. Additionally, 45% of our beneficiaries come from Black minority communities, highlighting the importance of promoting inclusivity and addressing potential disparities in literacy outcomes.

We acknowledge that low literacy rates often vary through boroughs and are committed to reaching the most underserved, underrepresented, and marginalised young people across East London. We collaborate with schools and community organisations to implement a tailored intervention that addresses the specific needs of each group, offering a diverse range of services to expedite the development of foundational literacy skills. 

Responsibilities:

Support in delivering literacy workshops to children and young people in schools, creating a safe, collaborative, and enjoyable learning environment.
Offer encouragement and motivation to participants to enhance their literacy skills and confidence.
Assist in setting up activities and managing logistics to ensure smooth workshop days.
Implement workshop activities safely and professionally.
Reflect on workshop practices with school staff to identify areas for growth and improvement.

Requirements: 

Individuals from educational backgrounds, teaching, youth support roles, and tutoring may find this role particularly compelling.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage and motivate participants.

Being a Trustee

IRMO’s Board of Trustees is made up of six to nine Trustees, who work together to ensure the charity is run properly. As a trustee, you will have the opportunity to support IRMO’s strategic development and oversee its finances. Trustees meet every two months (usually online in the evening) and are asked to commit an additional eight to ten hours between meetings to follow up on actions and provide advice and input on strategic documents and areas of work relevant to their areas of expertise.

General Responsibilities

• Stay up to date with and assess the political, economic and social contexts that affect IRMO’s work
• Support the development of and approve IRMO’s key strategic documents
• Annually review and approve IRMO’s budget
• Review, update and approve major policies
• Approve salaries, benefits, terms and conditions for staff
• Ensure that IRMO’s financial structure is adequate for its current needs and long-term strategy
• Ensure that the organisation has the necessary resources in place to meet its long-term goals
• Ensure that the Board of Trustees is adequately informed of the condition of the organisation and its operations
• Ensure that published reports adequately reflect the nature of the services and the financial condition of the organisation
• Approve major actions of the organisation, such as capital expenditure over authorised limits and major changes in activities and services 
• Review staff results in relation to IRMO’s aims and objectives, as well as annual and long-term goals
• Appoint, supervise, support, and appraise IRMO’s Director
• Provide candid and constructive criticism, advice, comments and praise
• Ensure that the Director has established appropriate policies to define and identify conflicts of interest throughout the organisation and are administering and enforcing those policies
• Appoint independent examiners/auditors subject to approval by members
• Ensure compliance with relevant legislation affecting the organisation
• Annually review the performance of the Board of Trustees and take steps to improve its performance

Action for Stammering Children (ASC) is looking to recruit an enthusiastic and suitably qualified person to join our Trustee Board as Treasurer to replace our current Treasurer who has sadly come to the end of his term. 

Who are Action for Stammering Children?

Action for Stammering Children is the UK charity for children and young people who stammer, their families, and the communities who support them. We are a small charity, founded in 1989, but one that punches above its weight and with Dr Ria Bernard, who joined us as Chief Executive in 2022, we have big ambitions! 

We’re here to make sure that every child who stammers has the support, respect and confidence to live the life they want to lead. 

We support and empower parents, caregivers and professionals; facilitate and champion research; and campaign for changes in policy and societal attitudes 

What do we do?

Information, community and support

We provide resources, advice and guidance for children and young people who stammer, their families, and the professionals who support them. 

Changing policies and attitudes 

We make sure the voices of children and young people who stammer are heard. We work with politicians and other decision makers to ensure the unique needs of children who stammer are reflected in public policy. But we know we can’t stop there. That’s why we campaign to challenge prejudices and misconceptions, seeking to change how society treats stammering and promote acceptance. 

Championing research 

We support and promote research into childhood stammering in order to build understanding and feed into our advocacy work, informing positive changes in policy and practice. 

Our team

ASC currently has a staff team of three (one of whom is part-time) but we hope shortly to recruit a part-time book-keeper and an events co-ordinator, in order to be able to deliver on our ambitious strategic objectives. 

Our Board of Trustees has been chaired by Dame Jane Roberts since 2021. With a number of trustees having come to the end of their term, we have had a number of trustees join the board recently including a new Company Secretary and two new trustees who had previously been members of ASC’s Youth Panel. With the Chair, the Company Secretary has been reviewing our governance to ensure that we conduct ourselves in line with best practice in charity governance. The Youth Panel is made up of young people who themselves stammer and who inform our strategic direction as well as engage in projects of their own. Our Annual Report for 2022-23 is available on the Charity Commission website, in addition to Trustees’ Reports for previous years. 

Executive and Non-Executive, we are a professional but friendly bunch who would extend a warm welcome to a new Treasurer as well as ensure that there was a generous handover period with the current Treasurer.

Who are we looking for as Treasurer?

We would like to attract a qualified accountant, perhaps still working, perhaps recently retired. You might have a personal connection to stammering but this is not required. Your interest, enthusiasm and experience are the most important.

Role description of the Treasurer

Purpose

• To monitor the financial matters of the organisation and report to the Board of trustees at regular intervals on its financial health in line with good practice and in accordance with the governing document and legal requirements
• To oversee arrangements for risk management and ensure that these are adequate to organisational need, governance requirements and legal obligations.

Main responsibilities:

• Oversee the framework of internal controls and, in conjunction with the Company Secretary and Chair, the charity’s policies, procedures and delegated responsibilities in line with good governance, legal and regulatory requirements
• Oversee and review the preparation of budgets, management accounts and the annual financial statements, ensuring that they are brought regularly and in a timely manner to the Board 
• Monitor and advise on the financial viability of the charity, including the adequacy and use of charitable reserves and other funds
• Oversee the risk management framework, ensuring that the risk register is brought regularly to the Board for review
• Develop a working knowledge of the activities, services and products of Action for Stammering Children
• Provide advice and financial analysis to other Board members 
• Play a key role in the annual accounts, budgeting, cash flow and management accounts processes 
• Act as a liaison with the external auditors 
• Monitor the charity’s reserves and use of funds 
• Act as a counter signatory on all financial transactions and applications to funders when required

Events Volunteers needed! We’re looking for enthusiastic and flexible Events Volunteers to support the planning and delivery of our events at The Pioneer Club in St Albans and the surrounding areas. 

Our calendar is full of exciting opportunities, and we need your help!

We need volunteers to lend a hand at our festival days which are action packed with performances, food, stalls and games; to be a part of our open mics, jams and lives performances; to support our community events such as our school holiday cinema club; to help at our holiday open days such as Easter, Halloween and Christmas events; and to spread the joy with our Pop Up Piano - attending local events and festivals, inspiring people to be part of the music!

We will need:

• Event day volunteers - help setting up and packing down, stewarding, cloakroom, working the bar/café, welcoming & signposting attendees and providing information, acting as a charity ambassador and promoting The Pioneer Club, taking pictures and gathering quotes.

• Event planners - help to get the events off the ground, deal with enquiries and admin, book performers and food and drink providers, and market the event

Founded in 1941 for young evacuees from London during the Second World War, The Pioneer Club is a registered CIC and charity supporting communities in St Albans and beyond. We deliver creative arts programmes through events, workshops, training, and classes. Whether it’s live music in our iconic music hall, lessons with our amazing team of pro skateboa rders, or on the stage with our performing arts programmes, there’s something for everyone at The Pioneer!

As an historic grassroots music venue, we have witnessed some of the biggest names in music come through our doors, including Motorhead and The Zombies of “She’s Not There”. Enter Shikari are another hugely successful St Albans band who started out at The Pioneer Club, before moving on to achieve global success, including headlining Download Festival and performing at Wembley Arena.

Taking part in cultural activities is so important for children and young people. Access to music, skate, art and performing arts leads to benefits such as:

Sadly, funding for the arts is decreasing year on year. And grassroots music venues are closing at a rate of 2 per week. As a charity, we couldn’t exist without the support of our volunteers. As part of the team, you will be helping us to deliver our events, and to raise funds to ensure that every young person has access to the arts, no mater their circumstance.

Exeter Community Initiatives (ECI) is seeking new Trustees

Commitment: 2-3 hours per month

Location: Exeter/Hybrid

Contract: voluntary

ECI has an active board of trustees known as the ECI Council. The trustees set the strategic direction of the organisation and oversee the governance required to deliver innovative projects and programmes that meet the needs of people in Exeter and wider Devon.

We are seeking multiple trustees to strengthen and diversify our board. We are particularly interested in hearing from people who have skills and experience in the following areas:

• Using ECI’s services or similar services of other organisations.
• Have relocated to Exeter and/or have faced challenges finding a sense of belonging in their community.
• Child and/or adult safeguarding.
• Human resources, particularly employee relations/employment law
• Law/Legal services.
• We are keen to hear from younger applicants as we want to ensure we are including the
  perspectives of young people.

About the role

 As a voluntary trustee you will play an important role in the success of ECI as part of the board team. Your responsibilities will include:

• Contributing to the strategic direction of ECI.
• Advocating for the services we provide and the positive outcome they have for our community.
• Governance oversight to ensure we operate within legal and regulatory frameworks.
• Networking/utilising your skills to enhance our reach and impact.

The board of trustees meet bi-monthly, usually alternating between in person and online, with meetings taking place on weekday evenings. In addition, we will look for your engagement and support in areas of work that your skillset and experiences lend themselves to on an ongoing basis.

All reasonable travel and other associated expenses will be reimbursed in line with ECI’s travel allowance policy.

You don’t need to have previous experience as a charity board trustee – we will give you the support that you need to learn about us and your role.

Volunteer Maths teachers

We are currently recruiting experienced volunteer Maths teachers or tutors to support young people with their learning. On Thursdays we provide Maths classes from beginner to GCSE level at our weekly education drop-in.

We are specifically looking for support with the following levels:

• Beginners
• GCSE

Volunteers must be available on Thursday evening (5-7pm)  in central Leicester.

Teaching/tutoring volunteers may be involved in:

• Working one-to-one or in small groups with young people
• Planning a learning session to reinforce skills taught at college
• Developing and maintaining After18’s learning resources
• Recording and evaluating progress

Teaching/tutoring person specifications:

• Previous teaching experience essential
• Awareness of, or willingness to familiarise with, exam syllabus and exam requirements
• Spoken and written fluency in English
• Compassion and sensitivity to asylum-seeking young people
• Ability to work within After18’s policies and procedures
• Able to commit for the academic year
• Commitment to promoting and safeguarding the welfare of the children and young people they come into contact with

Volunteer Facilities Coordinator

We are seeking a dedicated and organised individual to join our team as a Facilities Coordinator. You will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation and maintenance of our facilities, including offices, event spaces, skateparks and gardens. The Facilities Coordinator will play a crucial role in supporting our mission by providing a safe, functional, and welcoming environment for our staff, volunteers, and beneficiaries.

This role will include:

• Work with our facilities manager to coordinate and schedule repairs, maintenance, and renovations as needed
• Work with the team on refurbishment projects and improving facilities
• Assist the Pioneer Club in adhering to health and safety and safeguarding requirements
• Collaborate with other departments to support the planning and execution of events, programmes, and initiatives requiring facility resources
• Assist in the development and implementation of sustainability initiatives to minimise the charity's environmental footprint
• Provide support and guidance to staff and volunteers regarding facility-related matters
• Assist with collection and delivery of donations, including furniture, hardware, equipment. Volunteers with a van especially welcomed!

ABOUT THE PIONEER CLUB

Founded in 1941 for young evacuees from London during the Second World War, The Pioneer Club is a registered CIC and charity supporting communities in St Albans and beyond. We deliver creative arts programmes through events, workshops, training, and classes. Whether it’s live music in our iconic music hall, lessons with our amazing team of pro skateboarders, or on the stage with our performing arts programmes, there’s something for everyone at The Pioneer!

As an historic grassroots music venue, we have witnessed some of the biggest names in music come through our doors, including Motorhead and The Zombies of “She’s Not There”. Enter Shikari are another hugely successful St Albans band who started out at The Pioneer Club, before moving on to achieve global success, including headlining Download Festival and performing at Wembley Arena.

WHY WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT

Taking part in cultural activities is so important for children and young people. Access to music, skate, art and performing arts leads to benefits such as:

✓ Improved self-esteem and self-control
✓ Decreased hyperactivity and inattention
✓ Reduced antisocial or criminal behaviours
✓ Improved prosocial behaviours, such as empathy and helping others

Sadly, funding for the arts is decreasing year on year. And grassroots music venues are closing at a rate of 2 per week. This affects all young people, but especially those from the least advantaged communities who, as a result, may never pick up a musical instrument or have access to art and culture.

As a charity, we couldn’t exist without the support of our volunteers. As part of the team, you will be helping us to improve our building through maintenance and repairs, which helps us to keep delivering our services.

TIME COMMITMENT

We can’t deliver our services without the generosity and time of our volunteers, so work to be flexible around you. You can commit to anything from a few hours a week, or more.

Volunteer with us!

At Acorns we provide care and support for life limited or life threatened children and their families. We are a charity, so most of the care that we provide is funded through fundraising and through our shops.

To help us to continue to provide the care that we do, we are looking for fun and enthusiastic volunteers to join us in our Bromsgrove shop. Our shops are exciting and dynamic, with no two days being the same. From our walk-in customers, to receiving donations, and everything in between

As a Shop Volunteer with us, you will be:

• Engaging with customers
• Accepting and sorting donated stock
• Pricing donations for sale
• Working on the till

Our shops are open Monday to Saturday (some open on Sundays too) 9am to 5pm.  You can volunteer the hours that suit you, but it would be great if you could support in the shop for at least 3 hours a week.
