Home-Start works with families in communities, supporting  thousands of families and children to transform their lives. At Home-Start Birmingham Central and South-West we're now seeking a Chairperson.

What will you be doing?

At Home-Start Birmingham Central and South-West we are seeking a Chair to contribute their expertise and experience to lead and support the effective running and governance of the Scheme.

We’re looking for a skilled volunteer who can Chair the board, as well as lead on strategic and operational advice and guidance.

As Chair, you will work with fellow trustees and the Scheme Manager, to advise on governance, have oversight of finances, risks, safeguarding, lead on the direction of the Scheme to achieve its objectives and support operational aspects.

The role will be responsible for:

· provide supervision and management of Scheme Manager and act as sounding board for staff

· lead and support the Strategic role to use local procedures appropriately

· contribute to Board discussions about the Home-Start’s capacity in working with more complex families, including those where there are child protection concerns

· support the Board to monitor and review systems, policy and procedures to ensure good practice within the Home-Start and compliance with the Home-Start Quality Assurance Standards

· Ensuring the board of trustees understands and fulfils its responsibilities

· You will also play a vital role, along with the rest of the board of trustees, in developing our overall Scheme strategy and ensuring the ongoing good governance of the Scheme.

Your support as Chair will assist us in being able to continue to provide vital individual, non-judgemental, compassionate and confidential volunteer-led help and support to local families in Bartley Green, Edgbaston, Harborne, Ladywood, Soho and Quinton.

This is an exciting opportunity to help lead Big Leaf Foundation in the next phase of its development, as we transition our self-employed contractors to employee contracts and explore new multi-year core funding opportunities to build greater sustainability in our work. We are looking for someone with direct experience in financial management and/or charity finance and fundraising to fill this role. Ideally you will have experience of moving people onto employee contracts. You will use your skills and knowledge to make a lasting difference to the lives of displaced young people in Surrey.

In addition to the general responsibilities of a trustee, duties of the treasurer include:

• Overseeing, approving and presenting budgets, accounts and financial statements.
• Being assured that the financial resources of the organisation meet its present and future needs.
• Ensuring that the charity has an appropriate reserves policy.
• Preparing and presenting financial reports to the board.
• Ensuring that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place.
• Liaising with any paid staff and volunteers about financial matters.
• Advising on the financial implications of the organisation’s strategic plans.
• Ensuring that the charity has an appropriate ethical funding policy.
• Ensuring that there is no conflict between any funding sources and the aims and objects of the charity.
• Ensuring that the accounts are prepared and disclosed in the form required by funders and the relevant statutory bodies, for example the Charity Commission.
• Ensuring that the accounts are scrutinised in the manner required (independent examination or audit) and any recommendations are implemented.
• Keeping the board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities.
• Contributing to the fundraising strategy of the organisation.
• Ensuring the accounts are presented in a coherent and easily understandable way in our annual review.
• Sitting on appraisal, recruitment and disciplinary panels as required.

In addition, with other trustees to hold the charity “in trust” for current and future beneficiaries by:

• Ensuring that the charity has a clear vision, mission and strategic direction and is focused on achieving these.
• Being responsible for the performance of the charity and for its “corporate” behaviour; ensuring that the charity complies with all legal and regulatory requirements.
• Acting as guardians of the charity’s assets, both tangible and intangible, taking all due care over their security, deployment and proper application.
• Ensuring that the charity’s governance is of the highest possible standard.

elop is an award-winning LGBT Mental Health and Wellbeing Charity with 30 years’ experience of supporting LGBT+ communities across London and surrounding areas.

Joining our LGBT+ Group Facilitators team, you will be part of an enthusiastic and dedicated team who value & appreciate the benefit of supporting others to  socialise & network, supporting LGBT+ people to come together in a welcoming, safe and supportive environment with opportunities to meet new people, form new friendships, gain peer support and much more.

Duties

Volunteering in this role will give you opportunities to contribute & support the planning & promotion of group programmes, help in organising & facilitating sessions, along with supporting & enabling the involvement, voice & inclusion of all members attending, ensuring a welcome, supported, safe and comfortable environment for all.

Our activities are delivered on various days and times across the week and weekends, so there are plenty of opportunities to get involved. 

You may already have some previous experience of activity facilitation, which is fantastic; however it isn’t necessary to come with all the skills & experiences already on board, just a friendly & outgoing personality with good communication abilities, the rest you’ll be supported to develop. 

Respecting diversity, understanding and upholding professional boundaries and confidentiality are fundamental to all of our work and you will be required to support this. 

At CATTs, we work to give every young person 15-29 to access to vital health education, to allow them to be empowered to know their own bodies and to feel confident communicating health worries. We do this by working with young people and providing interactive workshops that will cover a multitude of topics concerning their health. Our work will always be supported by communities we serve and what they want, and need will come above everything else. This will ensure every young person feels heard through our work and by the people that need to hear them.

What are we looking for.....

We are now looking for up to 4 new trustees to lead the organisation and work with the staff team in delivering the next 5 year plan,building CATTs into a leader in cancer awareness, creating sustainable and diversified funding streams, and addressing the health inequalities that young people and communities face on a daily basis.

• Detection: Knowing the signs & symptoms; 

• Prevention: Knowing how to reduce their risk of cancer as a young person; 

• Empowerment & Independence: Making informed choices for themselves and realising that they know their body best.

Put simply, CATTs are for young people, by young people. Diverse backgrounds can lead to different health experiences among young people. CATTs work to make sure all young people have a voice by addressing their specific health needs surrounding different genders, sexualities, abilities, ethnicities and living statuses. CATTs want to create a culture shift of talking to each other frankly about health. Tackling taboo subjects helps create a more open and honest society without shame. If we can break the stigma, people are more likely to get their signs & symptoms checked by a doctor earlier.

As part of this recruitment round, the structure of the trustee board, will be changing from one overall chair to one chair and two vice chairs (one supporting governance responsibilities of the charity, one supporting operational delivery).

Person specification 

Each trustee must have: 

• A commitment to the mission of CATTs; 

• A willingness to meet the minimum time requirement; 

• Integrity; 

• Good, independent judgement; 

• An ability to think creatively and to use your imagination to support the future of the charity; 

• A willingness to speak their mind 

• Possess the willingness to understand the charities legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of the trusteeship 

• An ability to work effectively as a member of a team and to take decisions for the good of CATTs.

CATTs is willing to provide training and support to any new trustees that have not previously held positions of responsibility (Please find attached further information on the responsiblities of being a trustee).

The commitment from you...

CATTs would like our trustees to commit at least 3 to 5 hours a month of availability to help with the staff team, along with 6 meetings (1 hour 30 mins each) of the board per year. This is the minimum but if you can commit more on either a long-term or for a particular project that would be great.

How do I apply?

After completing a short application and blind-shifting process we will invite shortlisted applicants for an interview with our trustees and the CATTs staff team. We will look at the option of shadowing our current board team but are also happy to hit the ground running joining the board fully straightaway.

We are an award winning charity that provide a school-based 1-2-1 mentoring programme for vulnerable young people, helping them to realise their full potential no matter what their circumstances.

Our mentors are volunteers who give just 1 hour a week to mentor the young person they are carefully matched to.

Through no fault of their own, young people who are care-experienced or facing challenges experience a significant gap in outcomes compared to their peers. They aren’t reaching their potential - but 1-2-1 mentoring can change that. Just one hour a week with a consistent, caring adult can boost confidence, academic performance and open doors to a brighter future. 

We’re transforming the lives of the young people we support, recognising their talent, we help them to grow and utilise their abilities. We want everyone to get a fair chance at life. 

As a mentor you would provide encouragement, reassurance and a safe space to build confidence and self worth, ultimately helping the young person to unlock their potential.

As well as supporting in the visitor's centre, you will also be required to support Pact's play and children’s services, including our family days, and potentially with our refreshment service in the prison visits hall.

• Offer a friendly and welcoming environment within the Family & Visitors’ Centre, where people visiting the prison can spend time before and after their visit
• Assist with booking/checking in of visitors in line with Pact and the prison’s procedures
• Encourage families to access support or signposting them for their needs by interacting with visitors, offering information and advice as appropriate on a confidential basis and ensuring first time visitors are provided with enhanced support and reassurance
• Help maintain an area in the visitors’ centre for children, which may include displays of children’s artwork, relevant posters and information, as well as toys and other materials to engage children before and after a visit
• Liaise with prison staff, including visits and security staff, to ensure close co-operation in the smooth and efficient reception of visitors at the prison

What You’ll Need:

• A full UK driving licence (held for at least two years) or a D1 entitlement.
• A few hours a week (or more, if you prefer) to give.

• Confidence driving larger vehicles (minibuses or MPVs) is ideal, but if you prefer to drive cars, we have those opportunities too.

Our Mission:

Co-Founded in 2019 by Chrisann Jarrett MBE, We Belong is more than a charity—it's a force for change. We've already achieved significant victories, from challenging unfair immigration policies to securing scholarships for deserving young people. In 2021, We Belong’s work contributed to a new shorter route to settlement being introduced. Young migrants who are fully integrated in the UK now have five-year route to settlement, rather than the previous 10-years. It’s estimated that that over 300,000 children and young people could benefit from this policy change. Now, we're on a new mission: to ensure that every young migrant has the opportunity to thrive in the UK.

The Opportunity:

We Belong is seeking a voluntary Chair to lead our board of Trustees. This is a chance to drive real change, working alongside passionate individuals dedicated to our cause. We need someone with strategic vision, governance experience, and a commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Key Responsibilities:

- Chair board meetings and provide strategic leadership to the Trustee team.

- Ensure compliance with governing documents and charitable objectives.

- Support the CEO on strategy and best practices.

- Critically assess risks and opportunities and develop effective strategies in the context of the Charitable purpose of We Belong.

- Resolve conflicts and make timely decisions.

Experience & Skills:

We're looking for someone with a background in the migration field, governance, or related fields. Experience in leadership is essential, advocacy, or youth development is highly desirable.  We value lived experience and so candidates with lived experience of the UK immigration system are welcome to apply.  Most importantly, we need someone with a passion for making a difference.

Time Commitment & Location:

Preparation for quarterly board meetings, both in person and remote, as well as the opportunity to participate in selected committees. The Chair will also supervise the CEO through regular 1:1 meeting and represent We Belong at sector events.

We Belong - Empowering Young Migrants

Main purpose of the role: To maintain church grounds to ensure they are well kept to enhance first impressions and reputation of the church.

What you will be doing: Weed, cut back brambles, tidy beds and driveways, dispose of litter, help with pruning, planting eg. bulbs, help with clearing things to tip as needed

Our Home-Visiting Service supports families who are experiencing difficulties or suffering stress and who have at least one child under the age of five years.

Visiting families in their own homes and in their community, where the dignity and identity of each adult and child can be respected and protected

Reassuring parents that difficulties in bringing up children is not unusual and encouraging them to enjoy family life.
