Role Description 

Role: Website Management Volunteer (Volunteer, unpaid)

Supported by: Movement Director

About White Ribbon Alliance UK: We prioritise the eradication of gender-based violence and the promotion of gender equity in sexual and reproductive health and rights, especially for marginalised and underrepresented communities. We enable access to unbiased and evidenced-based resources, education, and support for women, girls, and trans individuals. We influence healthcare professionals, hospital systems, policy makers, and the public to centre the human rights of women, girls and trans men, intersex, and non-binary people throughout the lifecycle of their sexual health needs. 

Purpose of the Role: The Volunteer Website Manager will support White Ribbon Alliance UK's efforts to improve maternal and reproductive health by helping us on a two month project working to polish up our websites to keep them relevant, up to date and engaging for members of the public. 

Our aspirations for activities the volunteer would perform:

• Review our websites and provide constructive feedback and pragmatic recommendations for improvement.

• Update and maintain our website, ensuring it’s visually appealing and aligns with our brand.

• Ensure that content on our websites meets with internal and external policies and guidelines.

• Work with our team to understand website needs and integrate feedback for improvements.

• Utilise SharePoint and Microsoft Teams for collaboration and document management. 

• Handle ad hoc work required by the charity such as social media, copy writing, administrative tasks, etc.

NOTE: We are looking for volunteers who can reliably contribute 5 or more hours per week for an 8-10 week period to the charity. 

Necessary skills and qualifications:

• Proven expertise in creating and maintaining websites.

• Interest in sexual and reproductive health (SRHR). 

• Strong understanding of, and passion for, intersectional feminism. 

• Effective communication and collaboration skills.

• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

• Familiarity with website building tools such as GoDaddy, Squarespace, and Wix.

• Proficiency in Canva, Microsoft Office, SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, or similar platforms. 

Desirable skills and qualifications: ​

• Photo and video editing skills. 

• Social media content creation skills.

• A basic understanding of HTML.

What will you be doing?

The trustees' role is to provide guidance, governance and strategic direction. We have small paid staff (including a full-time CEO) who co-ordinate a large cohort (~150) of volunteers.

The commitment for a trustee is 6 meetings (early evening) per year plus an annual away-day. Periodically trustees will also be needed for other duties - eg interviewing potential employees.

Our funding comes from a variety of sources: local council, National Lottery and other major funders as well as many local people and businesses.

We our looking to boost our Trustee capacity with a need for both "general" trustees and in particular people with financial knowledge able in due course to take on the role of treasurer. Other specific skills desired are: HR, knowledge/experience in the homeless sector, property management.

Whilst we welcome people of all faiths and none, the charity has its roots in local Christian churches and we particularly welcome interest from people active in their local churches.

What are we looking for?

We are looking to add more than one trustee. 

We are particularly interested in people with: financial expertise, experience in the homelessness sector, experience in property management, HR. 

However what is needed above all is people with vision and commitment to what we do as an organisation and a lack of experience in those areas is not a bar to application.

What's Involved

We're looking for new volunteers to read online. Reading Heroes is a highly individualised initiative - every book that you read has been chosen specifically for you and the child.  All books are provided, and you will receive ongoing personal support from our dedicated Reading Heroes team, as well as opportunities to meet with other volunteers.

The number of care-experienced children in the UK growing; research tells us that these children are more likely to experience social, emotional and mental health problems, so we believe that Reading Heroes is a more important project than ever.

We have found that the Reading Heroes scheme has helped the children involved with their reading and other literacy-based skills, but these are not our primary purposes. Reading Heroes simply promotes reading for pleasure, and giving some of our time to children who need a little extra support - along with a kindly, friendly listener!

As a Reading Heroes volunteer, you’ll be instilling a love of stories which can have a lifelong positive impact. 80% of participants tell us they enjoy reading more after taking part.

Overall purpose

To support children (the child/ren who have complex medical needs and/or their siblings) in 1:1 sessions through the integration of counselling and play skills

Role responsibilities

Children, who have been assessed by an experienced therapist from the project and with parental consent, will be referred to the Child Therapist who will:

• Make contact with the client’s parent/guardian organising an initial 1:1 meeting with them to talk through the issues their child faces and establish the time, location and frequency of sessions
• Provide support through an integration of counselling and play skills
• Attend monthly group supervision (2 hours)
• Undertake The Maypole Project initial training (20 hours)
• Work to The Maypole Project model of support for children and young people
• Attend a training update session at least once per annum
• Complete client notes and The Maypole Project paperwork as required
• Liaise with their supervisor or the Clinical Supervisor in case of questions/difficulties
• Follow The Maypole Project policies and guidelines at all times whilst volunteering
• Attend service-wide activities including family activity events and fundraising events

For students: Please check whether your course placement requirements would enable you to provide counselling at external venues (clients home, hospitals, hospices etc). This would occur only after a settling in period and with additional training and support provided by The Maypole Project.

Support

Whilst volunteering you will have support from our Family Support Co-ordinator for day to day issues and our Lead Therapist or another qualified counsellor for monthly clinical supervision.

Time Commitment

Volunteers days and hours are negotiable but, due to the long-term promise of support to our clients, a most valued aspect of our service, we do ask volunteer applicants to be available to volunteer for a minimum of 6 months from acceptance onto the volunteering programme at The Maypole Project. We would ideally like volunteers to aspire to offering 2 years commitment to the role.

Person Specification

Education & qualifications

• Good general education (essential)
• Final year student on counselling or therapies course; including study of child development and child therapies (essential)
• Courses must be accredited by BACP, IATE, BAPT or approved equivalent and require the student to engage in personal therapy across one year (essential)
• Qualified at diploma/degree or masters level in child and young person counselling or play therapy or equivalent (desirable)

Previous experience

• 20+ client hours supporting children and/or young people (essential)
• 20+ face to face client hours supporting children and/or young people (desirable)
• Experience of working with people impacted upon by complex medical needs/loss and bereavement (desirable)
• Working with people from a diversity of backgrounds (desirable)
• Working with diversity of disability in families (desirable)

Skills & knowledge

• Good communication and interpersonal skills with all ages – focusing on children and young people (essential)
• Child and Family centred approach (essential)
• Experience of supporting children and families (desirable)

Are you passionate about empowering young people and coordinating impactful services? Urban Youth is looking for a dedicated and proactive Youth Work Volunteers to join our team. In this role, you’ll help shape and oversee the delivery of engaging, meaningful youth services that inspire and uplift young people across London.

Which roles and areas are we looking for?

1. Managers: Manages a youth project or activity, as well as manages and motivates volunteer youth workers.
2. Lead Youth Workers: Leads on youth work sessions or classes and ensures high quality activities and provides leadership.
3. Youth Worker: Engages directly with young people, facilitating activities, mentoring, and providing support
4. Mentor: Offers one-on-one guidance to help young people develop skills, confidence, and resilience
5. Befriender: Builds relationships with young people, providing companionship and emotional support.
6. Activity Coordinator: Plans and organises events, workshops, and recreational activities.
7. Safeguarding Officer: Ensures the safety and well-being of all participants, managing safeguarding policies and procedures.
8. Youth Work Trainer: Provides training for volunteers, around youth work, including skills and competencies. This includes on site, remotely and also in a training room.
