Our vision is a UK where people's health isn't just a postcode lottery. Can you help us research the root causes of preventable illness and what works in reducing the risks, to influence the country's health policy and practice.
As a Trustee you’ll ensure we continue to operate within our charitable health remit, support and provide advice on our work, and attend (virtual) Board meetings.
As a part time Research Lead you’ll use your experience of research projects to lead a small team of volunteer researchers, usually aiming to holistically review published research to identify:
- The root causes of a potentially preventable health issue.
- Which approaches internationally are most effective in reducing the health risks..
- How these approaches could be adopted or adapted in the UK, including any existing policy or practice which could be built on and which key stakeholders need to be engaged.
- Any potential for associated primary research with university partners.
Do you share our belief that prevention is better than cure and that health in the UK should be more than a postcode lottery. If so we'd like to hear from you if you can also:
- Exercise good, independent judgement and work effectively as a board member.
- Bring energy, expertise and commitment to the role of Trustee, and potentially broaden the diversity of thinking on our board.
- Commit to Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.
For the Research Lead role we're looking for you to bring:
- A postgraduate health-related qualification
- At least 3 years’ professional experience of leading, coordinating or project managing health-related research teams in the UK
- Health-related publications
- A commitment to evidence-based research
- Good organisational skills and the ability to lead and motivate graduate researchers with diverse backgrounds and experience.
Experience of securing research funding or working in a think tank or a health policy role would be an added recommendation.
There are a small number of daytime Trustee meeting (usually by Zoom at lunch-time) - with most other work undertaken at times and places convenient for you.
If you meet this specification and are able and willing to commit 5 -10 hours per week, we look forward to hearing from you.
We aim to help achieve a healthier UK - instead of people's health being a postcode lottery

Hughes Hall – a college of the University of Cambridge - is seeking collaborative professionals working outside Higher Education who wish to share their expertise and gain from closer involvement with academia.
The College wishes to recruit its next generation of Bridge Fellows: forward-looking people with a global outlook who bridge the gap between academia and wider society, to help transform Hughes Hall’s education and research potential, and its impact on the wider world. Bridge Fellows serve as board members (on its Governing Body) and are non-remunerated senior members of the College.
Our Bridge Fellows are unique, like our academics. You may be an established leader in your field, or at an earlier stage in your career and looking to further enhance your strong leadership skills. Either way, you must demonstrate a strong commitment to improving how the academic and wider worlds work together to benefit society. We’re looking for applicants who show a close affinity to the College’s values – inclusion, impact and innovation – and the ambitions of our 2030 Vision, and illustrate how they would make a substantial contribution to achieving them.
Bridge Fellows are expected to participate in the life of the College and exchange their experience with the wider college body. You will be required to attend in-person Governing Body meetings (six per year), may additionally be requested to serve on a sub-committee, and will be expected to give time to actively support individuals, projects or events as appropriate.
We would particularly like to attract people who have the insight, creativity and enthusiasm to help the College achieve one or more of its following goals:
● Delivering our transformation of the college by 2030, whether extending and transforming our educational offer beyond academic curricula; developing our estate, including our digital estate; and building strategic partnerships to widen access and possibilities.
● Strengthening the societal impact of the College, helping forge relationships in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors, and civic society; supporting entrepreneurship, commercialisation, business, policy making or community engagement; or magnifying our profile.
● Widening the pool of expertise and experience within our community, for example in managing change, overseeing and developing our resources, or communicating with decision makers and the wider public.
● Developing opportunities that empower minority communities within and possibly beyond the College.
Hughes Hall highly values diversity for the benefits it offers everyone in our community; we are strongly committed to ensuring equality of opportunity. The College welcomes expressions of interest and applications from candidates from all communities and backgrounds. Women, people of colour, and those with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply.
Bridge Fellows benefit from being part of the College’s multi-disciplinary community of fellows, staff and students, as well as connecting with the wider University of Cambridge ecosystem. They enjoy meals, use of College rooms, travel expenses and other privileges, as well as opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Bridge Fellows are initially appointed for 3 years, with the possibility of renewal for a further 2 years.

Take part in managing community led and owned renewable energy projects for the MaidEnergy Community Benefit Society
What will you be doing?
MaidEnergy is an established community business operating across Maidenhead, Windsor, North Surrey and surrounding areas as needed. The Society has produced 8 rooftop solar projects and one ground source heat pump on leisure and school facilities, through support and investment of £970k by over 250 members who have an equal vote. We are also investigating the feasibility of installing a hydro energy plant on the Thames, since our success in securing £140k in government funding towards the study - bringing in paid experts to assess the opportunity.
Community Energy South is a capacity building non-profit which has secured National Lottery Funding for our Society, and 10 others, to pay for staff. This means we have a special opportunity to grow and deliver more community energy, faster.
This growth needs strong management by the board, which is why four additional board members are required to help run the Society alongside the existing team of five. While we are already a diverse team, we are keen to maintain this in terms of background, culture, abilities, experiences and approaches.
Tasks include: data management, project management, design/review of leases, site relationships, volunteer management, procurement, web upgrade, lead on marketing and admin to name a few.
We need people who are committed to climate change mitigation, diligent, proactive, imaginative and who will enjoy working with our lovely, driven team.
Time Commitment
1-3 hours / week. Unsure of hours needed as depends on skills offered
What are we looking for?
In general, management experience is needed. This can be in any area relevant to the previous description including: change management, project/operations management, engineering relative to renewables projects, coordinating staff/volunteers, marketing etc.
We aim to ensure all skills are present across the Board.
What difference will you make?
As part of our leadership you will support and shape our work, growth and strategic direction, as well as help us achieve our purpose to grow locally generated and locally owned renewable energy.
This is a vital role, and as a board member (technically a volunteer director), you will have a real opportunity to offer your unique skill set to help the strategic progression of the Society.
We meet as a board online once per month plus occasional additional meetings in person for project-specific activities.

Bright Futures UK works with young people who have been forced to take time out from education due to chronic illness. We provide programmes to help stimulate learning in addition to having a social aspect that offers respite to isolation these young people face due to their unfortunate circumstances.
We are urgently looking for a warm and energetic volunteer History tutor to provide educational support and a fun, safe space for these young people. Tutoring experience is not essential as full training is given. Our sessions also are all currently online.
We need someone who is able to engage with young people in a positive and friendly way, helping them overcome their experiences and not feel defined by their illness. You would engage with a young person on a one-to-one basis to help catch up on their studies, increase their confidence in their own skills, and have some fun with them in order to help them progress.
The young people we work with have missed so many experiences in school which we take for granted. The time you can offer to help fill in those missed periods is invaluable to their development. Your sessions will be fully supported by Bright Futures UK staff – from questions or queries, resources or materials or just to bounce an idea off the team, we’re here to help.
Volunteering with Bright Futures UK is something that can easily fit into your working day or a busy schedule with commitment starting from as little as 1 hour per week. We are so grateful for any support you might be able to provide, as are our young people.
We’re looking forward to working with you to help our young people reach their true potential!
