We are looking for Youth Advice Centre Food Market/Reception volunteers with an interest in supporting young people (aged 13-25), through providing information and signposting to services.
YMCA Youth Advice Centre (YAC) Brighton offers advice, support and guidance to young people in Brighton and Hove. The YAC team are able to offer expertise on a wide range of topics. Our aim is to provide young people in the local area with a safe and friendly environment where they can access helpful advice and support. We offer a Family Support & Mediation Service and a Support & Advice Service providing sexual health advice and services, emotional and wellbeing support and benefits and money advice.
We are looking for volunteers who would like experience in a friendly support service for young people. This will involve working at the Youth Advice Centre (YAC) to welcoming young people at reception, keep monitoring systems up to date, answering YAC’s main phone line and developing our social media presence.
Key to this role, is supporting our youth-led Food Market project, supporting young people accessing the food market and completing registration forms, taking payments, and supporting the smooth running of the Food Market Tuesday to Thursday between 3-6 pm.
We ask for a commitment of a minimum of 3 hours a week for a 6 month period.

1 - MAIN PURPOSE OF ROLE
To provide confidential emotional support for people experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which may lead to suicide. To provide such support by telephone, face to face, email, letter, web chat and whatever other means of communication may be adopted by Samaritans.
2 - POSITION AND SUPPORT IN ORGANISATION

3 - KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- To provide confidential emotional support as above
- To uphold Samaritans Mission, Vision & Values & Policies & Procedures
- To complete regular volunteering duties, including overnight duties, as agreed
- To support fellow Samaritan volunteers during shared duties
- To debrief with duty Leader after each shift
- To liaise with duty Leader in respect of difficult or emergency situations or when in doubt

4 - QUALITIES & EXPERIENCE
- Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times

- To be able to communicate clearly with callers and branch volunteers
- Ability to deal sensitively with all callers, including vulnerable people, those with mental health issues and children, as necessary
- Able to follow procedures and maintain systems

- Listening volunteers should be 18 or over upon completion of their training.

- This is an unpaid volunteer Trustee position & does not pay expenses. The charity is only just starting, when the charity is more established we can consider paying expenses for volunteer roles, but currently at the present time the role is unpaid with no expenses. ABOUT THE PROPOSED CHARITY:
The International Society for the Promotion of Permanent & Universal Peace (International Peace Society - IPS for short) will be an inclusive and ethical Society created in the UK in Manchester, the 'City of Peace', to further Domestic & International Peace initiatives. Especially to in future, if the Society becomes successful & raises enough funds, employ professionals, in particular, of the Social Sciences - particularly those skilled in Peace & Conflicts, Social Work, Psychology, Community Development, Humanitarian efforts, Domestic & Family Abuse, International aid, International Diplomacy & many others. The Society, if successful, will have other jobs & volunteers also of all types of skills & abilities relevant to the Society's aims as well. The founder of this 2024 Society is Cindy Baxter, a Social Scientist & Registered Social Worker in England with 8 years experience in Safeguarding (Child Protection) across two countries (Australia & the UK), with studies in Psychology, Sociology, History & a Social Work Masters Degree that included a community development course. Cindy has an enormous amount of experience of doing paperwork for Government, experience of working with asylum seeking children, has experience of travelling to other countries & interacting with people from different cultures & Cindy is also a descendent of the Peace Family Line - her Great-Grandfather is Robert J C Peace who was born in Battersea in London in 1921. Cindy will go on to study a PhD in Social Sciences part-time whilst helping to run the Society alongside other founders & trustees. If the Society became successful, & enough funds were raised, an employment call would then go out to locate a suitable Peace President for the Society & other essential staff.
At the moment however the Society is at the very beginning stages where Trustees are needed to help start the Society, help with fundraising & apply to register the charity with the Companies House & the Charities Commission as a Charitable Not-For-Profit Company (Limited by Guarantee) in England in 2025.
There would be two main aspects to the Society:
- Domestic Peace & International Peace
CHARITABLE PURPOSES:
- The advancement of human rights, conflict resolution or reconciliation or the promotion of religious or racial harmony or equality and diversity
- The advancement of health or the saving of lives (saving lives by preventing wars, ending wars, de-escalating the negative impacts of wars & by domestic & family abuse assistance)
- The prevention or relief of poverty (where it relates to war or domestic/family abuse/exploitation)
- The advancement of education (Peace Education & Social Sciences)
- The advancement of the arts, culture, heritage or science (The advancement of Social Sciences specifically)
A brief overview - this is not an exhaustive list of everything the Society will aim to do but a general starting point:
The International section of the Society would likely involve forms of overseas aid, focus on diplomacy, encouraging Peace between Nations, spreading messages of peace & peaceful resolution of conflicts, attempts to avert war, especially nuclear war, employing independent Diplomats, etc. Attempting to encourage communities to unite in a spirit of peace, for example by hosting events for the public & the Society's members to attend, such a big peace walks or charity luncheons or charity galas etc. The Society will start in Manchester but if it becomes successful could branch out into other regions of the UK or even into other Countries. The Manchester office where it will start, may in future employ people or enlist volunteers who may work overseas at times as part of their role. The main reason would be to encourage as much as possible conflict/dispute resolution & encourage Nations and differing Nationalities to find diplomatic ways of resolving difficulties in an effort to end wars & prevent new wars/conflict from continuing to occur. Social Scientists, Social Policy graduates and other professionals may also be employed to uncover the deeper reasons behind what is causing specific conflicts/wars in particular regions of the world & give advice on how best to proceed to attempt to end the war/address the underlying problems that are leading to conflict/war.

- Representing Peace in the North of England
- If the Peace & Justice Project based in London was willing to partner with the IPS we could work in tandem with them, they focus a lot on the Politics of Peace
In terms of Domestic Peace (within the UK) there will be a section of the Society that assists people & families having difficulties with domestic & family abuse or other family problems that are disturbing the peace (e.g. if the Society raised enough funds in future we could hire couple's therapists, domestic abuse specialists or partner with or support local agencies that already specialize in domestic & family abuse)

Other potential aims:
Peace Education, Peace Awareness, Peace initiatives, Humanitarian efforts.
Further aims & purposes of the Society will be discussed in Trustee meetings, we are open to collaborating to discuss the overall aims & purposes of the Charity & how these can be brought into reality. Ultimately we want to have a Charity that helps a lot of people both within the UK & Internationally. This Society is only just starting right now, as such it is not yet registered. The purpose of this advertisement is to recruit Trustees to the Board of Trustees & be able to start the process of having the charity registered once we reach a fundraising goal of £5000.

- Preferred location of Trustees - Greater Manchester - at least 3 of the Trustees need to be based in Greater Manchester or surrounding areas & be able to commute to Manchester Central easily.
However applications from regions outside of Greater Manchester & surrounds will be considered as long as the applicant will commit to either commuting into Greater Manchester for meetings, or commit to joining us virtually. Remote option is available.
You must live in the UK & be legally entitled to volunteer in the UK.

- Couples counselling work experience and/or social work dispute resolution & de-escalating conflicts work experience
An applicant who has experience of fundraising & of starting and/or managing a Charity will be highly favoured. Particularly an applicant with experience of International aid & Diplomacy.

The likely set up for the Charity will be a Not-For-Profit Charitable Company (limited by Guarantee), this will require registration with the Companies House & The Charities Commission for England & Wales once the charity is able to prove earnings of £5000 or more per year. Please keep this in mind. Trustees will have very limited liability, at maximum £10. Trustees are not expected to contribute money to set the charity up, you do not need to have money to be a Trustee, however having fundraising experience or an ability to talk to others in the general community about the importance of raising money for Peace Initiatives will be essential for at least some of the 11 Trustees that will be recruited. Or have the ability to manage future volunteers (not in Trustee positions, general volunteers) to help them learn or develop the skills to fundraise for the IPS.
Fundraising is an essential part of any Charity & we will need to demonstrate we can raise £5000 annually before we can register our Charity. Applications close on the 15th of January 2025. Purpose of your role:
As an Education volunteer you will help deliver environmental education and play activities onsite, supporting the Education team at Brandon Marsh Nature Centre in Coventry, CV3 3GW and/or at the Parkridge Centre in Solihull, B91 3HW.
Tasks you will be involved with:
Our Education team require volunteers to help support and deliver fun and exciting environmental activities which could include supporting school visits (5-18 years), Nature Tots (2-5 years), after school clubs, holiday workshops and our monthly Saturday Nature Clubs (5 years +). Activities range from pond dipping, mini beast hunting and bird watching to nature crafts and art to bushcraft and toasting marshmallows over a fire.
Skills and abilities required:
• Enjoy working with children, with previous experience desirable
• Good communication skills with the ability to encourage all ages to engage
• Support with set up and close down of activities.
• Ability to work as part of a team.
• Enthusiasm for both wildlife and conservation.

Purpose of your role: To assist with habitat and species surveying and monitoring on Warwickshire Wildlife Trust nature reserves.
Surveys you will be involved with:
- Botany (national vegetation classification and habitat condition)
- Pond /amphibian
- Invertebrates (butterflies, dragonflies and moths)
- Birds and breeding bird populations
- Small mammals

Bioblitz Survey Force is our volunteer group who carry out surveys on Warwickshire Wildlife Trust nature reserves. As a Survey Force volunteer, you have the option to join our regular larger group sessions which take place on alternate Mondays* during the survey season (April–September) or if you would prefer and opportunities are available, you may survey by yourself or in smaller groups at a Warwickshire Wildlife Trust nature reserve of your choice at a time more suited to you (please note that the exception to this is that some surveys are required to be done at certain times of the day and year).
Alternatively; you may choose to do a mixture of both the larger group and individual surveying. For more information, please get in contact and we will be happy to discuss the various options with you.
*For volunteers wanting to join our Monday sessions, we either leave Brandon Marsh Nature Centre in the minibus at 10:00 am and head to a reserve to carry out the survey or arrange to meet at the site to be surveyed (in which case details of meet times and locations will be provided separately). Please note this is an approximate guide and survey sessions may be arranged on different days and times as required.
We also run various workshops to train people in identification skills and how to carry out surveys. The workshops are usually free to attend on the condition that attendees use their new skills to survey a reserve in their own time. If we are unable to provide appropriate surveying opportunities, we may be able to direct you to other organisations who can assist.

As people, we are all different and we all have different abilities, interests, goals and aspirations, this is exactly the same for a new volunteer with the Trust and more so when it’s a young person.
As a Volunteer Mentor to a young person, aged 16-17 years, you will work with the group leader, helping to support a young person to settle into the volunteering group, give guidance on the tasks being undertaken, and help to build their confidence whilst becoming part of the team.
Tasks you will be involved with:
Supporting a young person to undertake practical conservation tasks. Tasks will vary throughout the year, ranging from meadow and ride cutting in the summer to coppicing, tree felling and scrub clearance in the winter along with various other construction projects, fencing, pond work, litter picking. Often the work will involve the use of hand tools, such as loppers and bowsaws, rakes and tree-poppers.

From beginners, to birdwatchers, families to photographers, as a Guide in a Hide, you will give a warm welcome to all our visitors and encourage them to make the most of their visit to ours hides.
You will help them to identify wildlife they see and understand how supporting our work helps protect these wonderful habitats for wildlife and for people to enjoy.
You will also update the sightings board and inform the Visitor Experience Team of any exciting sightings.

Being welcoming in the Wright Hide, helping point out to the visitors what wildlife they can see.
Walking around the other hides talking to visitors and birdwatching.

Providing assistance to the Fundraising team in growing our fundraising activity for the Trust, we are looking to recruit volunteers to become Ambassadors for the Trust, to attend these community fundraising events on anad-hoc basis.
Due to the frequency and nature of these events, Trust staff are often unable to attend and therefore miss out on much needed funds and opportunities to grow our networks. Our volunteers act as an ‘ear on the ground’, and help by sharing any new fundraising opportunities that come up within our area/region with the Fundraising team.
Tasks you will be involved with:
- Giving a short thank-you speech on behalf of the Trust.
- Handling money/collecting funds.
- Setting up display banner and/or stand.
- Talking to members of the public about our aims and the work of the Trust.
- Working with a diverse range of people across all age groups.
- Helping others to act for nature.

-To identify areas of concern for young people regarding wildlife and the environment and to create campaigns to allow their voices to be heard.
-To help support the Trust’s 2030 strategic objectives by developing a bold, confident, young local voice, that raises awareness of the challenges faced by people and wildlife across Warwickshire, Coventry and Solihull and inspires young people and their communities to take action for nature. - The role will look to develop impactful and meaningful campaigns, targeted at young people in the area, that support nature’s recovery and - mobilise young people to take action.
- Build engagement and involvement with campaigns through social media, press, events, blogs, contacting local MP's and much more.
- Identifying and sharing (with the Trust and the wider public) stories in the local area which could help to promote the message of our campaigns and raise awareness of our wider movement and purpose.
- Helping others to take action for nature through events, campaigns, awareness raising and practical examples. Talking to members of the public about our #TeamWilder movement and the work of the Trust.
- Working with a diverse range of people across all age groups and communities. Meeting and engaging with like-minded people at campaign events or Trust/Youth Committee meetings.
- Help to build a database of young people and others in the community who wish to take action for nature.
- Work closely with the marketing volunteer and the Marketing and Communications team within the Trust, to share the campaigns with as wide an audience as possible.

Chair youth committee meetings and have the casting vote at Committee meetings where necessary.
- Responsible for ensuring that relevant communications from the Action for Nature team are circulated to all Committee members.
- Keeping the Action for Nature team informed of the Youth Committee’s activities and progress.
- Ensures all events and activities have the correct procedures and risks assessments in place to be safe and requires that committee members abide by these.
- Main committee contact with Warwickshire Wildlife Trust regarding the terms of reference for the youth committee.
