Animal Volunteer Roles

International Aid for the Protection & Welfare of Animals (IAPWA) is a UK-registered animal welfare charity dedicated to creating a better future for animals in need.

Our first project, established in 2009, is based in Borneo where we provide a lifeline to thousands of dogs and cats every year in need of veterinary care and support. Our companion animal projects and support programmes for other species have since developed in other parts of the world, including Romania, Penang Island, the Philippines, and Tanzania.

Our Auctions for Animals team is looking to expand and requires a passionate admin volunteer to help us continue to run successful online fundraising events. Ensuring our monthly auction records are kept up-to-date and communicating with our supporters and donors will be your main priority. You will also be supporting our team with other admin needs and contributing to our social media presence. 

Experience of Google Workspace would be an advantage along with strong communication skills, excellent attention to detail and the ability to work independently. As our main auctions are run through our facebook group so you must have an active account. 

We would ask that you can commit 1-3 hours per week, and while some tasks may be time sensitive, your hours can be flexible and can fit around your other commitments.

As a charity we can help thousands of cats each year thanks to the generous donations from our supporters. Raising funds is a key role in our charity, helping to raise the vital funds needed to help more cats and kittens in need.

As a fundraising volunteer, we will support you every step of the way to ensure your time at Cats Protection is a positive and rewarding one. Whatever time you can give really does make a big difference We have lots of exciting activities to choose from for example attending a fundraising event, fundraising online, promoting fundraising activities on social media, handling administrative tasks, or contributing to the development of new fundraising ideas. As a flexible role, you have the choice to be involved in the following:

• face-to-face fundraising – organising or helping with fundraising events, attending supermarket collections and monitoring collection boxes.

Retail Roles - eBay Coordinator (South London Branch)

Are you an eBay top-rated seller? We are looking for volunteers skilled in online selling and photography to help turn donations into funds. You will have fun, contribute to making our eBay business a big success, and enable us to help more animals!

This is an excellent opportunity if you are interested in collectables, researching unusual items, and love photographing objects to look their best! The time you dedicate would ensure that we made the most of the incredible donations to our charity shops, which means more funds can go towards our vital animal welfare work.

You will be supported by our e-commerce manager and shop managers while on site. We currently have 3 other e-comm volunteers so you will be working with them some of the time but may also spend time working solo.

You will need to be able to come to the e-comm office at our Tooting shop, SW17 7TW. The role may also include some remote working.

Our Charity Shop

Our shops play an essential role in raising the profile of the RSPCA in our local community and funds for our branch so that we can continue our vital animal welfare work. Our shops sell a mixture of donated items, including clothes, books, bric-a-brac and collectables, and a selection of new items.

Volunteer eBay Coordinator responsibilities

• Researching and listing the items for sale in our dedicated eBay store.
• A picture is worth 1,000 words so ensuring that attractive photographs are taken to boost eBay sales.
•  Packaging items appropriately before posting them to the buyer.
• Maintaining accurate records of listed and sold items.

What we are looking for in a volunteer eBay Coordinator:

• Ideally, you would have experience in selling items on eBay.
• Can create attractive listings for a wide variety of items.
• Someone who is flexible and can offer an ongoing commitment predominately on Thursday’s for 4 hours.

Driver role – own vehicle (Ceredigion Branch)

Can you help our four-legged friends get from A to B? We are looking for a friendly volunteer who can dedicate some time and their vehicle to transport our animals between our centres, boarding establishments, and the vets. 

The main activity at the Ceredigion Branch is veterinary assistance and cat rehoming. Our branch is run by a committee of locally elected volunteers who are responsible for the management and administration of the branch's affairs. You will work alongside the trustees and volunteers to provide transport for cats in care.

As a volunteer driver, you would be able to provide a suitable vehicle that you could use to help us transport the animals in our care. This is so our furry friends can get the veterinary care that they need or to reach one of our adoption units or animal centres. 

You will be provided with everything you need to be able to transport our animals safely such as leads, cages etc. as well as any training and support.

Volunteer Driver responsibilities:

• Transport animals to and from the vets, private boarding establishments and our animal centres within our health and safety guidelines.
• Ensure that RSPCA rules and regulations are complied with.
• Carry out a small amount of administrative work, such as completing mileage returns.
• Use RSPCA equipment to help you transport the animals such as leads, cages, kennels etc.

What we are looking for in a volunteer Driver:

• Drivers must be aged 18 or over, have a valid driving licence, and a vehicle, which is suitable for transporting animals.
• Someone who can lift animals in and out of the vehicle. 
• A friendly volunteer who has time and patience for each animal.
• Someone who is flexible and can offer an ongoing commitment.
• A careful driver!

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dynamic individual to join our team as a Mascot. In this role, you will represent our brand at various events, engaging with the public and creating a positive atmosphere. The ideal candidate will possess a vibrant personality and the ability to entertain audiences of all ages while embodying the spirit of our mascot character.

Duties

• Perform as the mascot at events and community functions, bringing energy and excitement to each appearance.
• Interact with attendees, including children and families, to create memorable experiences through fun activities and friendly engagement.
• Communicate effectively with event coordinators and team members to ensure smooth operations during appearances.
• Maintain the mascot costume in good condition, ensuring it is clean and presentable for each event.

Skills

• Excellent communication skills to interact positively with both children and adults.

We are looking for a well organised and methodical person to take on the role of Company Secretary and Trustee. The successful candidate will be able to take good minutes and have good administration skills and be able to ensure compliance with statutory duties and reporting.

 The charity is a company limited by guarantee and in this respect the company secretary will have some specific duties under company law and common law in their capacity as company secretary, including preparing and filing annual returns with Companies House in addition to those required by the Charity Commission. The general duties and responsibilities of the company secretary include:

· Maintaining the register of trustees / directors and secretaries, the register of trustees’ and secretary’s interests

· Being familiar with the charity’s governing document, the legal responsibilities of charities under the Charities Act 2009 and the charity’s internal governance rules

· Helping to ensure that charity trustees file all relevant statutory returns and information with the Charity Commission and Companies House, to include annual reports and changes to the charity’s details and/or trustee details

· Ensuring that the Council of Trustees are aware of the requirements to comply with the relevant codes such as the charity’s Code of Conduct for Charity Trustees and the Charities Governance Code

· Ensuring that for those Trustees who are also company directors that they are aware of the requirements to comply with the requirements of a company director to:

o follow the company's rules, shown in its articles of association

o keep company records and report changes

o file company accounts and company tax return

o inform other shareholders if they might personally benefit from a transaction the company makes

o to pay any Corporation Tax due

· Ensuring that decisions and actions of the council of trustees are accurately recorded and implemented

· Tracking progress with the charity’s risk register/ business plan/ strategic plan and making sure any correspondence for the charity trustees is brought to the attention of the council

The treasurer will oversee the monitoring of the organisation’s finances on behalf of the whole council of trustees, to report regularly on them to the council, and to make sure that money and property are properly managed. They will ensure that bookkeeping, record keeping, and budgeting are done properly. This includes:

· Ensuring proper systems are in place for budgeting, financial control (including financial delegations) and reporting

· Overseeing and monitoring procedures to reduce the risk of fraud, with specific reference to staff costs

· Keeping all trustees properly informed about the health the organisation’s finances

· Ensuring financial reports to the trustees are comprehensible and properly discussed

· Ensuring accounts and other financial reports are produced in the proper form and on time as required by other bodies such as the Charity Commission and Companies House

· Overseeing the appointment and communications with independent examiners according to legal requirements

· Overseeing the appointment and communications with accountants

· Monitor the overarching strategic management of the organisation’s financial resources, and report to the GM/CEO and the trustee council

· Oversee the charity’s financial risk-management process and report financial health to the trustee council at regular intervals

· Act as a counter signatory for online banking and applications to funders

A bit about this role

Our Cats Protection shops play a key part in raising the funds needed to help thousands of cats and kittens each year. Our shop assistant volunteers help with all aspects of the day to day running of one of our fantastic shops. They serve customers, help with stock rotation, create displays - and everything in between! They are part of a passionate retail team that make sure our shops are enjoyable places for customers to visit, leading to repeat custom and vital funds being raised to help our feline friends in need.

Our Volunteer Pet Welfare Speakers provide an informative and influential service by talking to children in primary schools and youth groups about responsible pet ownership and dog safety which enables us to improve the lives of thousands of pets. This role is for speakers who will visit and deliver talks to young people in primary schools and youth groups in their local area. We would love you to join us and help us help more pets in need

What you will be doing

• Having an informal interview with the team prior to selection
• Training online via e-learning to become a Pet Welfare Speaker
• Contacting primary schools using details we have given you to arrange all the details for your talks
• Visiting primary school and youth groups in your local area
• Delivering interactive presentations and fun talks to groups of children at primary schools during the day, and some youth groups such as Brownies and Cubs during the evening.

• To be a confident public speaker; happy to deliver PowerPoint presentations and talk to sometimes large numbers of children and young people in schools and youth groups

• To be computer literate as you will need to complete your training online, deliver our pre-designed presentations and use Assemble, our online volunteering system to keep in touch

Do you want to help us end the abuse of animals raised for food? In this flexible role, you will create change for animals by attending in-person events and taking campaign actions from home at a time that works for you. 

Why join us? We exist to end the abuse of animals raised for food. We work specifically on corporate focused campaigns demanding better welfare practices for chickens. This flexible and rewarding role is perfect for those looking to make a difference for farmed animals but without the strict time commitment. There are no set hours, you can get involved whenever you are free. Whether you're a student, retired, working full time, or somewhere in between - we would love to welcome you.

As a Campaign Volunteer, you will help us drive change for farmed animals by: 

• Joining us for in-person events locally, and nationally (this may include peaceful protests, public outreach and informal meet-ups). All relevant expenses will be paid.

• Taking part in campaign actions from home including writing emails and letters, making phone calls and social media actions

• Connecting with your MP to campaign for change

• And more! 

Gain fantastic transferable experience and build your advocacy skills in this flexible and rewarding role. You will be working directly with THL UK staff members who will steward and support you throughout your time with us. You will also have access to exclusive training opportunities to further your animal advocacy development, as well as a full onboarding process to get you started.

Our team is based all over the UK, so we’re set up to provide you with a great experience no matter where you’re based. We cover expenses to join us at in-person events, so you can be based anywhere and still get involved. No prior experience is required, we’ll give you everything you need. There is no set time commitment, but roughly 2-4 hours a month is average for this role, depending on how much you choose to get involved with.
