We are looking to recruit a Health and Safety Volunteer for the Bradford and District Group. As a Health and Safety Volunteer you’ll make sure all local group members are aware of their health and safety responsibilities. You’ll help them understand and follow guidelines and procedures to coordinate safe activities.
In this role you’ll gain knowledge of Health and Safety legislation, as well as develop your organisation, admin and communication skills. Most importantly you’ll help your local group make sure all their activities are safe for every member of your local MS community.
Time commitment
We estimate this role will need around 2 hours a week. Our roles are flexible and aim to fit around you. Time commitments for this role may vary depending on your activities. This is an ongoing role.
This is a great opportunity to gain experience within a large charity and develop your existing skills and learn new ones. We need you to get involved and help make positive changes to the lives of people affected by MS.

We often support service users who are transitioning into their own accommodation. Whilst this can be a time of happiness, it can also be a time of worry, with it bringing its own challenges, including physically being able to move their own belongings.
We want to support that transition as best we can, hence us looking for a skilled Volunteer Handyperson, who can help to make this process as smooth as possible.
CORE TASKS:
We are looking for a Volunteer Handyperson to help support a smooth transition for service users as they move into their new accommodation. Tasks will include:
· Lifting, carrying, and transporting items in a safe manner
· General handyperson tasks such as installing shelving
· General maintenance tasks
· Sharing knowledge of general maintenance with service users to empower them to do it themselves going forward
· Only complete tasks that you able or qualified to complete
· Maintain health and safety at all times
· Showing awareness of service users’ varying physical and mental well-being needs
· To provide feedback and safeguarding concerns to Local Coordinator - reporting any observations or concerns in a timely manner
· To take part in regular supervision and support
To regularly attend volunteer or staff meetings
· To attend training as and when required including health and safety, boundaries, safeguarding, manual handling and confidentiality
· To work within agreed professional boundaries at all times
· To provide a safe and non-judgmental environment that promotes the core values and ethos of the Trust, in accordance with the Medaille Trust Policy, Data Protection Act, and Health and Safety Regulations.
PERSON SPECIFICATION:
The role would suit someone who is friendly, kind, empathetic and non-judgemental. As well as someone who is physically fit to be able to lift and carry heavy objects. This position is rewarding and will be making an immediate difference in supporting and empowering service users.
This role requires maturity, and an ability to engage with people in a trauma informed way, while working alongside staff members in line with agreed procedures and systems.
· Volunteers must be at least 18 years old
· Volunteers will need to have a good standard of spoken and written English
· Be computer literate to be able to complete any online training
· Ability to maintain confidentiality is essential
· Volunteers to have knowledge and understanding of human trafficking issues or willingness to learn
· Knowledge of mental health issues and the challenges faced or a willingness to learn
· An understanding of the importance of professional boundaries in the role
· Have own vehicle which is in good condition, with tax, MOT and insurance which covers volunteer usage.

Role Summary
The Safeguarding Officer will work with the People Team Lead and the Trustee Board in ensuring that appropriate arrangements are in place for keeping students, volunteers and team members safe at Roots Academy.
You will promote the safety and welfare of young people involved in Roots Academy’s activities at all times.
Key tasks
- Support with developing, reviewing and implementing Roots Academy’s safeguarding policies and procedures: ensuring all safeguarding issues concerning students and volunteers who take part in Roots Academy’s activities are responded to appropriately.
- Make sure that everyone working or volunteering at Roots Academy, including the board of trustees, understands the safeguarding policy and procedures and knows what to do if they have concerns about a student or volunteer’s welfare.
- Develop and deliver safeguarding training.
- Make sure students and young people who are involved in activities at Roots Academy know who they can talk to if they have a welfare concern and understand what action the organisation will take in response.
- Receive and record information from anyone who has concerns about a student or volunteer who takes part in Roots Academy’s activities.
- Responding to information that may constitute a safeguarding concern, including a concern that an adult involved with Roots Academy may present a risk to children or young people. This includes:
a. assessing and clarifying the information
b. making referrals to statutory organisations as appropriate
c. consulting with and informing the relevant members of the organisation’s management
d. following the organisation’s safeguarding policy and procedures.
- Liaise with, pass on information to and receive information from statutory agencies such as the police. This includes making formal referrals to agencies when necessary.
- Store and retain safeguarding records according to legal requirements and the organisation’s safeguarding policy and procedures.
- Work closely with the board of trustees the People Team Lead to ensure they are kept up to date with safeguarding issues and are fully informed of any concerns about organisational safeguarding practice.
- Report regularly to the board of trustees on issues relating to safeguarding, to ensure that safeguarding is seen as an ongoing priority issue and that safeguarding requirements are being followed at all levels of the organisation.

What will you be doing?
As a Trustee you will play a vital role by ensuring that we are meeting the demand for our services, providing help and support to people in crisis in the local community as well as providing strategic direction for the charity. Trustees ensure that the foodbank acts in conformity with its purpose and with charity legislation, and that good governance, best practice policies and rigorous financial supervision are in place. They will be required to work collaboratively, with other trustees and with the staff and volunteers of the foodbank, and other external agencies.
Responsibilities:
- To ensure the Foodbank has appropriate procedures to comply with current legislation and good practice including employment; health and safety; equal opportunities; safeguarding & GDPR compliance/data protection etc.
- To work alongside the Treasurer and the trustee board to ensure the organisation’s financial dealings are systematically accounted for and on time, independently examined (on income over £25k) and made publicly available when necessary.
- To ensure our charity is accountable, actively complying with statutory accounting and reporting requirements and the law.
- To ensure appropriate financial plans are in place for future budget allocations as well as looking after contractual agreements with external partners that award money for core costs and additional projects.
- To help promote the organisation to a wider audience of potential funders and beneficiaries.

Property Trustee/Head of Property Committee
Overall Purpose
The Board of Trustees is responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity, developing the organisation’s aims, objectives and goals in accordance with the governing document, legal and regulatory guidelines.
Main Responsibilities
- To work with Pecan management to oversee the charity's property function.
- To help Pecan obtain best value from the property it owns on a freehold basis, while acting in line with the charity's objects.
- To help Pecan achieve best client value from all sites inhabited (as owner-occupier and tenant), while acting in line with the charity's objects.
- To ensure adequate oversight of the facilities management function within head office (as with all trusteeships, this is not an operational role).
- To chair the Property Committee 6-10 occasions annually.
Wider trustee duties incl. the following:
- Ensure that the charity, and its representatives, function within the legal and regulatory framework of the sector and in line with the organisations’ governing document, continually striving for best practice in governance.
- To uphold the fiduciary duty invested in the position, undertaking such duties in a way that adds to public confidence and trust in the charity.
- To take appropriate professional advice in all matters where there may be material risk to the charity, or where the Trustees may be in breach of their duties. This course of action will ensure the obligation to exercise their duty of care.
- To determine the overall direction and development of the charity through good governance and clear strategic planning.
- To avoid any personal conflict of interest.
Main Duties
- Ensuring the charity complies with legislative and regulatory requirements, and acts within the confines of its governing document and in furtherance to organisational activities contained therein.
- Acting in the best interest of the charity, beneficiaries and future beneficiaries at all times.
- Promoting and developing the charity in order for it to grow and maintain its relevance to society.
- Maintaining sound financial management of the charity’s resources, ensuring expenditure is in line with the organisation’s objects and that its investment activities meet accepted standards and policies.
- Ensuring the effective and efficient administration of the charity and its resources.
- Acting as a counter-signatory on charity cheques and any applications for funds, if appropriate.
- To maintain confidentiality about all sensitive/confidential information received.
- Whilst there is no formal requirement to live in or near south London, trustees are expected to attend in-person meetings on a small number of occasions each year, including at PECAN.
Accountable to
As trustees are responsible for the governance and functioning of the charity, they are accountable in varying degrees to a variety of stakeholders, including: service-users, members, funders, the Charity Commission, and Companies House. Close attention must be given to the governing document.
