Our Council members make important appointments, help inform strategy and keep us connected to our members, local communities and the wider public. It’s important that the Council reflects the breadth and diversity of our work and the energy, enthusiasm and experience of Council members are invaluable to us. About the Council
The Council plays an important role in how the National Trust is governed. Its main responsibilities are:
- To appoint Trustees
- To monitor and support their work
- To ensure our strategy is consistent with our charitable purpose and that it is being delivered by the Board of Trustees

Council members are ambassadors for our work and inspire support for the Trust among members and the wider public.
The Council’s strength comes from the breadth of knowledge and experiences of the people on it. It has 36 members – an equal balance of elected and appointed people. The elected members are directly chosen by members of the National Trust. The appointed members come from organisations (chosen by our members every six years) which have a connection to the Trust’s work.

Time Commitment
Council members will be elected from November 2025 for three years and can expect to spend about ten days a year on Council business. There are three Council meetings a year, including one which is held as part of a three-day visit hosted by one of our regions or countries. Meetings are likely to be a mix of in person and virtual. The time commitment is spread across these activities and includes time for preparation. There is also the opportunity to get more involved if you wish with additional briefings, informal property visits or by supporting the work of the Council’s committees.
Council meetings are usually held during the working day, allowing time for travel where appropriate. The 2026 schedule is as follows:
- Early February 2026
- Three days in June/July 2026 (regional visit)
- Early October 2026
Council members may serve a maximum of three three-year terms, subject to re-election or re-appointment. Some of our Council members go on to become Trustees.
Council membership is a voluntary role, therefore, as with all our volunteer roles, travel expenses are reimbursed, as are additional expenses incurred such as accommodation.

The Council’s Nominations Committee, which oversees the election, is happy to receive applications from volunteers and non-members as well as members. However, in order to be eligible to stand for election to the Council our constitution requires that candidates are members of the National Trust. Membership will need to be taken up by 31 March 2025 if you wish to go forward to the election.

About the Election and Election Process
This year we are expecting to fill seven election vacancies for a three-year term starting after the AGM in November 2025.
Standing for election involves making an application to our Nominations Committee and having your candidacy published to our members in the autumn in the election material and on our website. In fairness to all candidates, you should not participate in any other methods of publicising your candidature.
A ballot of members is conducted in September/October and the results are usually announced at the AGM.
Please note that the Nominations Committee is required to recommend to members those candidates who they believe are best suited to undertaking the work of the Council. In reaching its recommendation, the Committee will consider how candidates demonstrate the broad range of the qualities and experience we’re looking for and can help the Trust achieve its ambition of being for everyone – you can find out more about these in the candidate information.
Any current members of the Council who are standing for re-election should note that attendance records for meetings will be published.

How to apply and closing date
If you would like to stand for election, you will need to complete an application which contains the following:
- A candidate information form [JH1] which includes your election statement and answers to two questions posed by the Nominations Committee, as well as a completed declaration and affirmation;
- Supplementary information which you can use to explain anything that you think might be helpful to the Nominations Committee that is not included elsewhere in your application;
- A brief CV (maximum length two sides of A4);
Next Steps
The Nominations Committee will meet in April to review applications and will invite a number of candidates to meet the Committee. You can expect to hear from us about the progress of your application towards the end of April.
The Committee will meet invited candidates on 1, 2 & 8 May 2025. We plan to hold these meetings online and alternative arrangements may be possible if candidates have issues accessing online meetings, you’ll just need to let us know. The Nominations Committee aims to match its recommendations to the number of vacancies which are expected this year.
Please note that valid election statements of all eligible candidates, whether or not they are invited to meet the Committee, will go forward for publication to our members. Anyone wishing to withdraw from the election process will need to notify us by 30 May 2025.
If you are successful in the election, you will be invited to attend an induction day in January 2026 in one of our offices, either Swindon or London.

Could you use your social media, marketing and communications experience to raise the profile of a small charity? Help us to increase our social media presence and engagement, generate greatr content and help promote existing activities.
Our charity delivers a range of awareness campaigns and support services to patients, relatives, partners and carers who have been affected by a poorly understood pain condition; Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). We are looking for 2 experienced social media and communications volunteers who are able to develop posts and campaigns from design to inception, create fresh and engaging content, increase engagement and to increase awareness of the charity and of the condition we represent.
Even though we are a small organisation we have big ideas and would like to draw on your experience in the communications world to help the charity deliver engaging content and communications to help us spread our aims and message to all our audience.
What Will You Be Doing?
- Engagement: Help increase engagement, improve the number of followers/likes, create & execute a content calendar
- Content Creation: Produce fresh, branded and engaging content for our social media channels
- Graphics: Prepare graphics and text for sharing across channels
- Strategy: Help develop a social media strategy
- Engage with our followers and encourage interaction
- Manage and maintain social media channels on a regular basis
- Support charity campaigns, marketing, events and fundraising activities by promoting them on our social media feeds
- Use your creative skills to devise strategies to engage, grow, and widen our target audiences

You will be with a small team of volunteers who will provide an overview of our existing social media content, our brand and how we have approached our social media content to date.
Experience
We are looking for a volunteer who has experience in:
- Different types of marketing and communications media, including electronic and social media
- Writing and editing marketing content for social media platforms including Facebook, X, Pinterest, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and LinkedIn (especially TikTok, Instagram Reels & posts and YouTube)
- Building strategies to increase social media following and /or build fundraising or awareness campaigns
- Developing a coherent brand voice for social media, from content creation to community interactions
- Using and setting up tools such as Buffer, Canva etc
- Creating and executing content calendars to help plan social media activity
Skills Required

About White Ribbon Alliance UK: We prioritise the eradication of gender-based violence and the promotion of gender equity in sexual and reproductive health and rights, especially for marginalised and underrepresented communities. We enable access to unbiased and evidenced-based resources, education, and support for women, girls, and trans individuals. We influence healthcare professionals, hospital systems, policy makers, and the public to centre the human rights of women, girls and trans men, intersex, and non-binary people throughout the lifecycle of their sexual health needs.
Purpose of the Role: The Volunteer Website Manager will support White Ribbon Alliance UK's efforts to improve maternal and reproductive health by helping us on a two month project working to polish up our websites to keep them relevant, up to date and engaging for members of the public.
Our aspirations for activities the volunteer would perform:

Review our websites and provide constructive feedback and pragmatic recommendations for improvement.

Update and maintain our website, ensuring it’s visually appealing and aligns with our brand.

Will you share your counselling or psychotherapy skills as a child & young person's (CYP) counsellor or therapist to join an online counselling service for young patients with a pain condition (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome)? We’re supporting patients, relatives, partners and carers affected by a debilitating condition; Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS).
We're looking for qualified paediatric/child & young person counsellors, psychotherapists or psychologists ideally with some experience of working with chronic pain patients, who may want to volunteer their skills supporting our young service users and help develop a psychological support service.
As a Volunteer Child/Young Person's Counsellor/Therapist you’ll be providing remote online counselling/therapy support services to young people aged 5 to 18 who are vulnerable, many of whom are isolated and in need of mental health services. You’ll be providing one-to-one counselling sessions online or by phone. With your recognised counselling qualifications and experience you will be an asset to our small charity and to our young services users. We will also consider therapists who are in need of a placement.
Depending on your qualifications, skills and experience, volunteer child counsellors / therapists provide person centred counselling (general talking counselling), integrative, pluralistic including or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), ACT and EMDR for young CRPS patients.
We are needing to expand this service to support our young clients as it has rapidly received a high number of referrals. People can be referred both by health or legal professionals as well as having parents/guardians referring them to the service.
In this role you’ll be able to develop your paediatric counselling skills, organisation, communication and team working skills. If you have experience in younger children please do get in touch.
Most importantly you’ll be providing essential services that help make sure no one has to face CRPS alone. Be the hope for CRPS.
What the role involves
This role may vary depending on needs, but is likely to include:

Undertake a child client assessments, followed by person-centred counselling (via Zoom or phone) to our clients, offering up to 20 one hour (or 45 mins age dependant) sessions for each client plus 4 assessments

Providing one-to-one therapy sessions to young patients aged 5-18 (we will consider therapists who can only support primary or secondary school age)

Update our database with the client’s basic information and session attendance

Maintain succinct, relevant session notes and store these securely

Will you share your counselling or psychotherapy skills as a counsellor or therapist to join an online counselling service for patients and families affected by a chronic pain condition (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome)?
We're looking for 2 qualified counsellors, psychotherapists or psychologists volunteers ideally with some experience of working with chronic pain patients or lived experience of chronic illness, who may want to volunteer their skills supporting our adult service users (aged 18 & over) and help us to continue developing a mental health support service.
As a Volunteer Counsellor/Therapist you’ll be providing remote counselling/therapy support services to adults aged 18 and over many of whom are isolated and in need of mental health services. You’ll be providing one-to-one counselling/therapy sessions online via Zoom or by phone. With your recognised counselling qualifications and experience you will be an asset to our small charity and to our services users.
Depending on your qualifications, skills and experience, our volunteer counsellors / therapists provide person centred counselling (general talking counselling) or integrative counselling, or specialist services such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), ACT, CFT and EMDR for CRPS patients, or their families & close relatives.
People will be referred both by health or legal professionals as well as having patients and carers themselves referring into to the service.

Responsibilities

Why do we need you?
Dr Jeanette Rowley is a consultant on veganism and the law and our Vegan Rights Advocate. Jeanette has been a leader in the promotion of the legal rights of vegans for over a decade and is the founder and chair of The Vegan Society’s International Rights Network. She is now looking for a volunteer to help refresh and update published material relating to the legal protection of vegans. This project will include working on our guide for employers and relevant content on our website.
What does the role involve?
The role involves working collaboratively with our Vegan Rights Advocate to review, assess, evaluate and update the information provided on our website and in some of our resources, such as our guide Supporting Veganism in the Workplace.
At the review and assessment stages, you will read specific advocacy resources to familiarise yourself with the subject matter and content. You will conduct independent research into each specific topic, take notes from relevant authoritative online sources, and assist in evaluating our resources and identifying areas requiring updating and development.
You will contribute to research on equality and inclusion, help to communicate best practice, fact-check information, and assist with redrafting and updating copy.
What training and support are available?
This role will come with an induction session and access to a regular point of contact to support you as a volunteer. You will receive an introduction to the project and tasks. Although the work will be carried out remotely, you will not be required to work totally independently and will work on the tasks collaboratively on a mutually agreed basis.
What knowledge, experience and skills are required for this role?
- General knowledge and understanding of UK Equality Diversity and Inclusion principles and practice
- Experience and skills in conducting research
- The ability to work both collaboratively and independently
- Proficient in written English
- Experience of using Word and working on shared documents
- A legal or advocacy-related background would be useful, but is not essential.
What does my availability need to be?
This role is for a fixed period of six months. We ask for volunteers to commit to about four to six hours a week, although this may vary from week to week. The role can be performed outside traditional working hours and in any time zone, although staff support is only available between 9am and 5pm UK time.

Laura Chepner is our Education Officer, and she is looking for a volunteer to support her in her role. Laura has a background in education, with a degree in Primary Education which preceded a decade of teaching and a short stint in the role of SENco (Special Educational Needs Coordinator). Shortly after that, Laura theorised vegan-inclusive teaching, published An Educator’s Guide for Vegan-Inclusive Teaching and worked as the UK’s first vegan-inclusion education specialist until joining The Vegan Society.
At The Vegan Society, Laura supports vegan learners in education who have been discriminated against by acting as an intermediary between their families and the institution. Additionally, Laura supports educators by creating resources and delivering training sessions on what it means to be vegan-inclusive in their practice. Furthermore, Laura empowers parents/guardians to ask for vegan-inclusion by creating documents, with the help of The Education Network, that they can present and highlight their rights.
What does the role involve?
This role involves working alongside our Education Officer to create around 50 differentiated worksheets for teachers of key stage 1 (KS1), Year 2 to use. No lesson plans to be made – just worksheets that support the National Curriculum English programmes of study for KS1, Year 2 outcomes. Laura would delegate certain literacy areas such as ‘suffixes –ful and –less’. Once complete, we would meet online to look over and then Laura would delegate another area of literacy to be completed.
Below is an example of the type of worksheets that will be created.
‘Today I am learning to use regular plural noun suffixes – s or – es.’
These tasks are not exhaustive, and more assignments may arise as the project progresses.
What training and support is available?
The ideal candidate for this role will have a background in Primary Education and be comfortable working independently. However, we are always willing to invite volunteers along to staff training when possible and to deliver training on specific skills in-house, as identified throughout the volunteering period. This role is remote, so support from the Education Officer will be available through email and phone calls as required. Monthly reviews with the Volunteering and Engagement Officer will also be conducted to ensure the volunteer is happy in their role.
