Pecan is seeking an accountant and Christian to join the Board of Trustees as Treasurer and Chair of the Finance committee. See person spec.
Pecan is a community development charity based in Peckham. We work with the local community to help people find a way through seemingly impossible barriers to a better future.
Over the past 30 years, we’ve seen thousands of clients flourish through our programs, including: ex-offenders and their families, refugees and asylum seekers, young people and the long-term unemployed. We see our service users as people who need supporting – not problems which need solving.
We advocate for those we work with, challenging inequality and injustice at a local and national level to provide hope and belief in a better a future for our community.
Board meetings are held on 10-12 occasions annually on a weeknight at 6.30pm.
Meetings of the Finance committee are held quarterly at a time agreed between trustees and management.
The Treasurer, along with the other finance committee members and senior management, guides the financial and business matters of the charity in line with good practice and in accordance with our governing documents and legal obligations. There are no executive responsibilities within Pecan and the Treasurer will not be an employee.
Main responsibilities and duties - in addition to the general responsibilities of a Trustee and undertaken with other members of the Finance sub-committee
- To scrutinise and recommend budgets, accounts, financial policies, management accounts and financial statements to the board of Trustees after discussions with the Chief Executive, other senior staff, and other members of the Finance Committee, where applicable.
- To ensure that proper accounts and records are kept, ensuring financial resources are spent and invested in line with the charity’s policies, good governance mechanisms, and legal and regulatory requirements
- To ensure that Pecan has appropriate reserves and investment policies.
- Liaising where applicable with appropriate members of the core management team responsible for the financial and operational activities of the charity.
- Attending and contributing to the work of finance committee in line with its terms of reference and reporting back to the board of Trustees verbally and in writing.
- Liaising with the charity’s auditors where appropriate and monitoring and advising on the financial viability of the charity.
- Ensuring that specific financial and organisational controls and systems are in place and adhered to.
- Advising on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plans.
- Ensuring that sound financial management of the charity’s resources is maintained and that expenditure and investment are in line with the charity’s objects.
- Reviewing the financial aspects of the charity’s risk register.
Person specification
● A Christian.

Our podcast series, The Veterans’ Voice, has already seen success with our D-Day episodes, and we’re now looking to expand with new content focusing on interviews from the Women’s Royal Army Corps (WRAC) and other key themes like the Falklands War and Cold War Warriors.

Overview of the role:
PECAN is seeking to appoint a new Chair of Trustees. Under PECAN’s governing articles of association its trustees, including the Chair, are appointed for a three-year term, which may be renewed for a further two terms (so a maximum of nine years’ unbroken service).
Key tasks:
The Chair will hold the Board and Executive Team to account for the Charity’s mission and vision, providing inclusive leadership to the Board of Trustees, ensuring that each Trustee fulfils their duties and responsibilities for the effective governance of the charity. The Chair will also support the management team and ensure that the Board functions as a unit and works closely to achieve agreed objectives. They will act as an ambassador and the public face of the charity in partnership with the CEO.
Key responsibilities
· Provide leadership to the organisation and the Board by ensuring that everyone remains focused on the delivery of the organisation’s charitable purposes to provide greater public benefit.
· Chair and facilitate board meetings, oversee and ensure proper record-keeping
· Ensure that decisions taken at meetings are implemented.
· Give direction to board policy-making.
· Ensure that the charity has a clear vision, mission and strategic plan, and that there is a common understanding of these by the management team and the Trustees.
· Develop the Board of Trustees including induction, training, appraisal and succession planning
· Ensure that the Board is able to regularly review major risks and associated opportunities and satisfy itself that systems are in place to take advantage of opportunities and manage and mitigate the risks.
· Ensure that the Board fulfils its duties to ensure sound financial health of the charity, with systems in place to ensure financial accountability.
· Encourage positive change where appropriate and address and resolve any conflicts within the Board.
· Act as an ambassador for the cause and the Charity.
· Bring impartiality and objectivity to decision-making
· Address conflict within the Board and within the organisation and liaise with the CEO to achieve this.
· Foster, maintain and ensure that constructive relationships exist with and between the Trustees.
· Liaise with the CEO to keep an overview of the organisation’s affairs and to provide support as appropriate.
· Lead the process of supporting and appraising the performance of the CEO.
· Sit on appointment and disciplinary panels where required.
With the CEO:
· Plan the annual cycle of board meetings and other general meetings where required, for example annual general meeting.
· Set agendas for board and other general meetings.
· Ensure that the Board receives sufficient and timely information to make informed decisions.
Relationship with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and the wider management team:
· Establish and build a strong, effective and a constructive working relationship with the CEO ensuring they are held to account for achieving agreed strategic objectives.
· Support the CEO, whilst respecting the boundaries which exist between the two roles.
· Ensure regular contact with the CEO and develop and maintain an open and supportive relationship within which each can speak openly about concerns, worries and challenges.
· Liaise with the CEO to maintain an overview of the charity’s affairs, providing support as necessary.
About you:
PECAN is a Christian charity whose values are kindness, belief and hope. There is a requirement for all Trustees, including the Chair, to sign a statement of belief. The CEO is also required to be a Christian.
In addition to the qualities required of a Trustee of the charity, the Chair should have the following qualities:
· Leadership
· Experience of committee work, including at least one previous Trustee role.
· Tact and diplomacy, with the ability to listen and engage
· Good communication and interpersonal
· Impartiality, fairness and the ability to respect
· Ability to foster and promote a collaborative team
· Empathy
It would be desirable to demonstrate experience of the Chair role and/or be willing to join the Association of Chairs to increase their knowledge that will help with the role.
Impact of your role
By leading the Board of trustees of the charity, you will be part of a team providing a vital support function in your local community, seeking to ensure a dignified experience to anyone visiting or anyone who comes into contact with PECAN.
Support
A full trustee induction will be provided to support the new Chair in their role, as well as access to training opportunities to develop in their role as a trustee.
Please note:
· The Chair of Trustees will be appointed for three years. Under the terms of PECAN’s memorandum and articles of association this appointment may be renewed for a maximum of two further three-year terms (a total of nine years).
· You must be 18 or over and must not be disqualified from acting as a trustee and declare any conflict of interest while carrying out the duties of a trustee.
· The role of Chair is not accompanied by any financial remuneration, although reasonable expenses may be claimed (e.g. for travel and subsistence).

MS Together is a small charity which provides services of advice and support to people affected by multiple sclerosis (MS), with a particular focus on those aged 18-35 living with MS in the UK and Ireland. MS Together was founded in 2019 after Amy Thompson was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at the age of 21. The Chair will hold the Board and Executive Team to account for the Charity’s mission and vision, providing inclusive leadership to the Board of Trustees, ensuring that each trustee fulfils their duties and responsibilities for the effective governance of the charity. Principal Responsibilities
- Board Leadership: Lead the board in governing effectively, ensuring meetings are inclusive, and that the board fulfills its duties.
- Strategic Direction: Guide the board in setting the charity’s strategic direction, fostering a positive culture, and holding the CEO and volunteers accountable.
- Implementation Oversight: Monitor the implementation of decisions from board meetings to ensure timely and proper execution.
- Annual Review: Ensure the trustee board annually reviews its structure, effectiveness, delegations, and key policies, implementing changes as necessary.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Build strong, respectful relationships with the CEO, beneficiaries, and other stakeholders. Act as an ambassador for the charity, representing its interests and values externally.
- Critical Support: Serve as a ‘critical friend’ to the Chief Executive, providing support and constructive challenge to aid effective management.
Person Specification
- Experience working in the charity sector or on a Board of Trustees
- Passion for making a difference to people living with MS
- A proven track record in a strategic leadership role where transformation and growth has been a feature
- Strategic thinker with excellent communication and diplomacy skills
- A positive personal presence, with the confidence and ability to support the Chief Executive and Board Members
- Highly tuned listening and facilitation skills, and the ability to observe, interpret and draw conclusions.
Time commitment
We hold quarterly board meetings and Trustees are expected to attend and contribute to all meetings either in person or by joining virtually. You will also have bi-monthly calls with the CEO, and ad hoc calls/meetings with other members of the Board of Trustees and leadership team as appropriate.
Term of appointment
The Chair is appointed to an initial three-year term of service (including a probationary period).

We are a small but impactful organisation, dedicated to helping those who worked closely with British forces in Afghanistan and their families integrate successfully into British life.
Job description
We are looking for one or two volunteer interpreters—one fluent in Dari and one fluent in Pashto or one fluent in both—to join our team at the Gulab Sorkh Foundation (GSF). You will play a key role in supporting Afghan refugees who have resettled in the UK, assisting them in accessing essential services and communicating effectively in their daily lives.
This is an influential volunteer opportunity where you will make a real difference by helping Afghan refugees integrate into British society, providing crucial interpretation during interactions with service providers and in trainings.
As a Volunteer Interpreter, you will:
· Provide interpretation services (Dari or Pashto) to Afghan refugees, assisting them to understand key information related to housing, healthcare, education, and other public services.
· Interpret at a variety of trainings.
· Offer support and cultural understanding to ensure refugees feel comfortable and respected throughout their resettlement process.
Key responsibilities:
· Interpret accurately and sensitively between Dari/Pashto and English during one-on-one and group interactions.
· Collaborate with case managers and external partners to ensure the refugees’ needs are effectively communicated.
· Be aware of and sensitive to the needs of individuals who may have experienced trauma and displacement.
· Follow data protection laws and policies.
Essential skills:
· Fluency (written and verbal) in Dari and/or Pashto and in English.
· A high level of cultural sensitivity and empathy towards Afghan refugees.
· Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate complex information clearly and accurately.
· Ability to remain neutral and impartial in all interactions.
· Commitment to safeguarding vulnerable individuals and confidentiality.
· Strong IT skills including Microsoft Teams, and the rest of the Microsoft Office suite.
Desirable:
· Level 3 in Interpretation.
· Previous experience working with refugees or vulnerable communities.
· Knowledge of UK systems such as healthcare, housing, and immigration.
· Understanding of the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP) scheme.
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

· This is an unpaid voluntary position, offering flexibility to fit around your other commitments.
· This is a completely remote role, and as such you will need to ensure that you have access to a confidential, quite space during your working hours.
· As this role has contact with vulnerable groups, it is subject to a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and references.
