Tom’s Trust, a children's brain tumour charity, is looking for two new trustees to join our Board.
Although our office is based in Cambridge, where we were founded and where we provided our first service, we have grown from a regional to a national charity and want our Trustee Board to reflect that. We operate a hybrid meeting approach which supports this ambition to expand our Board.
We are particularly seeking trustees in the Oxfordshire or Liverpool areas, where our newest services are based, to work with our current Trustee Board of eight who work closely with our Senior Leadership Team to provide expertise and oversight of our ambitious strategy. Details of the Board are on our website.
We recognise the need to reflect, understand, and network, in each new region for which we provide a service and want to talk to enthusiastic individuals who have the professional skills, connections and understanding to help. Trustee roles are not paid, but Trustees will be reimbursed for reasonable expenses, including travel expenses. Trustee meetings are currently on a Monday evening every two months and these are hybrid with Trustees dialling in or attending in person. We have a number of subcommittees to support the main board, including clinical, fundraising, marketing and communications and finance.
In seeking new Trustees, the Board has the following objectives:
1. To make sure that the Board has the experience and skills in line with future priorities.
2. To gain different perspectives on the potential for Tom’s Trust and for its services.
3. To widen our network of contacts and support in new areas to help us support more families and new services.
Tom’s Trust is a growing and ambitious charity. Candidates must:
- Be enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the North West and its strengths and challenges;
- Be willing to support our Team with contacts and ideas as they work hard to get the public to understand our work in the area;
- Support fundraising efforts to find new support to allow our service to continue, contribute to the development of fundraising strategies, and assist in securing resources for our programs and initiatives;
- Understand and uphold charity governance principles and the role of charities;
- Be comfortable working with fellow Trustees and professional staff in a collaborative team, able to negotiate and discuss complex ideas in a respectful way to reach a majority decision;
- Have empathy for the need to help families whose child has been affected by a brain tumour.
If this role resonates with you, we would love to hear from you.
About Tom’s Trust
Tom's Trust is the UK's only charity dedicated to providing mental health support to children and young people, with brain and other central nervous system tumours, and their families. We believe that every child with a brain tumour should have access to the mental health support that they need, as well as their loved ones. Approximately 500 children aged 0-19 are diagnosed with a brain tumour each year. That’s nearly 10 children per week. Many children experience serious mental health issues such as PTSD, anxiety, and depression, as a result of their tumour, and 62% of children who survive a brain tumour will then live with life-long disabilities (such as blindness, hearing loss, lost motor-function or learning disabilities).
Tom’s Trust clinical psychologists support hundreds of families, working within hospitals in the East, North East, North West and now starting in Thames Valley; helping children from diagnosis, through their brutal treatment and as they return to life at home. Our team is also there to support a family if their child is dying or has sadly died from this devastating disease. It is our mission is to provide psychological support to children with brain tumours and their families in every area of the UK that needs us.
We believe that every child with a brain tumour should have access to the mental health support that they need, as well as their loved ones.

Join Neuroverse Charity as a Treasurer Trustee
Contribute to the ever-evolving landscape of support and inclusion for the Neurodivergent community. We are Neurodivergent Led.
Our purpose:
We are a brand new nonprofit, grassroots charity, currently in its founding stages. We are recruiting trustees to become part of our innovative, changemaking governing body to grow Neuroverse into a leading force for neurodivergent support and empowerment.
We have multiple aims that are all reflective of the lived experiences of our own community and the common themes and needs that show up again and again and desperately need addressing and responding to. Examples are:
- Inconsistent, non-inclusive models: Many learning models lack a unified, inclusive approach to community support.
- Lack of holistic, authentic community spaces: Few environments foster learning, creativity, and support, leading to isolation.
- Insufficient support for the newly diagnosed: Limited resources and nonmedical, compassionate support are available for those newly diagnosed and their caregivers.
Who our charity needs currently:
A treasurer - to ensure financial sustainability and transparency in our growing charity
Why Become a Trustee with Neuroverse Charity?
Champion Changemaking: Be an innovative, grassroots leader, creating much-needed and impactful social change with and for the neurodivergent community.
Collaborative Impact: Work remotely alongside a committed and passionate neurodiverse team to empower and support in a strengths-based way.
Shape Our Future: Influence and be part of the direction and success of a charity that is ever-evolving for the greater good.
How we’ll make a difference:
We will create an ethics bound, inclusive model centred on community, designed for replication across the UK. Our holistic spaces will foster learning, creativity, and support for the neurodivergent community. We will provide welcoming environments with experienced facilitators, combat isolation with regulating spaces for parents and carers, and offer newly diagnosed people tailored courses and resources. Grounded in warmth, humour, and positive action, our nonmedical therapeutic support will ensure everyone feels valued, empowered and heard.
What else?
We work flexibly, with monthly Zoom meetings. You can manage your time (and your spoons) around your commitments, working when it suits you best.
Neuroverse Charity is committed to embracing diversity and intersectionality in all forms. We encourage applications from individuals across the UK of all backgrounds, including those with lived experience of neurodivergence and disability.
Friendly, accessible interviews via Zoom will take place for these voluntary roles.

Brain tumours do not discriminate and they do not respect boundaries. They can strike anyone, at any age. And they strike quickly.
At The Brain Tumour Charity, we aim to address the clear gap in emotional support available to those affected by a brain tumour diagnosis, by expanding our counselling service. We know the difference that talking therapy can make to the brain tumour community and our goal is to reach more people, ensuring everyone that wants it, gets the support that they need.
How can you help?
We are in a position to offer a number of unpaid student placements, to those training to be integrative or person centred counsellors, which will see you work via telephone/webcam only, with a wide range of clients; from those newly diagnosed, to those at end of life, carers and bereaved loved ones.
This is a home-based role, and you can help by volunteering your time to see a minimum of 3 clients per week, between the hours of 9am—5pm, Monday—Friday.

- Have their own public liability insurance (or are willing to obtain this.)

About the Youth Team role
Youth Team Volunteers work with young people from a wide breadth of backgrounds, ensuring they really feel part of the St John family. Volunteers will help young people develop their confidence, teamwork skills, self-discipline, and generally encourage them to strive to be the best they can be.
You’ll get a huge sense of satisfaction and pride delivering an essential service. It’s great for you, great for your community and great for our nation, and it requires only a small commitment of your time.
Getting started
You will usually be able to start volunteering very quickly, joining your new youth unit, meeting the young people and your colleagues and beginning to learn on the job. However please be aware you will have some online training to do, and you will need to engage with classroom training opportunities when available. There is also optional training for those who wish to pursue higher youth team qualifications.
Pursuing the role
We do not have a fixed closing date, but we may pause recruitment if we become oversubscribed - so if you want to pursue this, please do not delay!
If you are not already a St John Ambulance volunteer, after getting some brief details we will first invite you to an interview with our Welcome Team.
When pursuing this role, we will check you meet the minimum criteria and then invite you to a Youth Team interview, after which we'll be able to tell you if you've been accepted for this role.
