We are based in Camden, Hammersmith & Fulham, Kensington & Chelsea, Lambeth and Westminster.

At Doorstep Library, we’re dedicated to bringing the magic of books and the joy of reading directly into the homes of children who need our support.

With 1 in 4 children in the UK leaving primary school unable to read or write properly, we recruit and train in-person and online volunteers to introduce children from under-resourced areas to the pleasure of reading.

What’s Involved?

As a Doorstep Library reading volunteer, you’ll visit the same families at their homes every week with a backpack full of books to share with the children and encourage their love of reading.

You will:

• Handpick books based on the children’s age, interests, and reading level
• Visit their homes with your volunteer partner for 20-minute reading sessions  
• Leave behind a selection of books for the children to borrow for the week

Our unique home-based approach allows our volunteers to build trusting relationships with families, helping them to connect with the community and equip them with the skills they need to succeed later in life.

When and Where?

We have volunteer opportunities in: Hammersmith, Parsons Green, Fulham Broadway, Shepherds Bush, East Acton, Latimer Road, Euston, Kings Cross, Marylebone, Edgware Road, Queens Park, Pimlico, Brixton, Tulse Hill, and World's End.

• Time commitment: One evening a week (Regular Volunteer), one evening every other week (Semi-Regular Volunteer) or once every 3 weeks (Stand-In Volunteer) during school term times
• Hours per week: 2.5
• Days: Our projects run on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Thursdays depending on where you are based from 4:30pm – 7:00pm

Skills/Experience Needed

• Be able to make a regular weekly commitment or once every 3 weeks for a Stand-In Volunteer during school term time
• Be compliant with our safeguarding procedures, complete an Enhanced DBS, Child Barred List check, and provide 2 references
• Enjoy spending time with children and believe in education for all
• Have comfortable fluency in English
• Be non-judgmental and respectful of a variety of lifestyles and children’s learning
• Have excellent communication skills – be able to listen to families and communicate effectively with Project Leaders (including via text/emails/calls with Doorstep Library staff)
• Be reliable – always attending a pre-agreed session and giving plenty of notice in advance of absences
• Be friendly – to build good relationships with families, your volunteer partner and the rest of the team
• Be confident – to lead the session or mentor a new volunteer
• Be patient, persistent and flexible – tailoring your approach to each family’s needs

Doorstep Library is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people, and all those it comes into contact with. All volunteers undergo rigorous safer recruitment processes including specified interview questions, a DBS check, and the collection of written and/or verbal references.  Safeguarding training is a mandatory part of the induction process for all volunteers, and they are expected to always adhere to our safeguarding policies and procedures.

A bit about this role

As a charity we receive numerous enquiries on a daily basis from members of the public related to cats and feline welfare. Our enquiries volunteers are part of a passionate team of volunteers that help Cats Protection signpost and manage these enquiries. They help our feline friends answering questions from members of the public, providing advice and signposting queries to other volunteers and employees if needed.

• Responding to enquiries from members of the public 
• Communicating with others and proving information in response to queries
• Signposting queries and requests to other team members

Support, guidance and keeping you safe

At Cats Protection we believe our volunteers should be happy and confident in their roles. We provide support and guidance from our National Cat Centre and through our regional and local volunteer groups and teams. We offer engaging online and face-to-face training, expenses and have policies and processes to help volunteers get the most out of their time with us.

What will I be doing?

Sorting through our book donations and pricing them ready for sale

Researching interesting books online on sites such as eBay, Amazon and Abe Books to value them for sale in the shop

Displaying the books on the shop floor ensuring books are rotated regularly to increase sales

Enlisting help from local auction houses when needed

Speaking with customers, making them welcome and answering queries

Promoting awareness of the charity and the services that we provide.

What skills do I need?

It’d be great if you have some knowledge of or interest in books, know what to look out for with book publishing dates etc.

A really keen eye for detail and ability to cross reference items across a number of websites to provide the most realistic valuation

Ability to work on your own initiative and as part of a team

Ability to communicate effectively with other members of the team and customers.

Ability to use computer for research

You may need to handle bags and donations from the public and there may be stairs to climb depending on which shop you are based in. If you have any concerns about this, please speak with the Shop Manager when expressing your interest in volunteering.  

How much time do I need to commit?

We’d need you to give around three hours per week if you can with the possibility to do more if you’d like to. However, we appreciate any time you’d like to give; please let us know this on your application form. All we ask is that you give the same hours each week and that you let us know as soon as you can if you’re not able to make it. This’ll help us to plan our week. 

What support will I be given?

Before starting with Tenovus Cancer Care, we ask that you do try a small number of hours in the shop so we can both see how the role may suit you. The amount of hours can be decided between you and the Shop Manager.

Following that the Shop Manager and team will be on hand to run you through the basics of helping in a shop in your first few days and they’ll always be on hand after that.

Service: Perinatal Support for Partners Service

This is a service that offers fathers and non-birthing parents, who’s partner is being supported by the West London perinatal mental health service, an evidence-based 1:1 assessment to support their mental health and wellbeing. The service signpost partners to relevant services (including a PSFP peer support group).

Role Description:

To support our PSFP Service with a variety of tasks such as conducting a 1:1 assessment, (which includes onboarding to the service), co-facilitating monthly peer support groups, signposting and helping partners to access other organisations, taking care of our inbox emails and other administrative duties.

Main responsibilities: 

To work closely with our PSFP caseworker supporting referral enquires & service-users in accessing this service. Co-facilitating a monthly peer support group.

Tasks:

• To answer emails and enquiries for the service within our service level agreements
• Triage clients for the service through an onboarding process.
• Co-facilitate a monthly peer support group
• Provide support to our PSFP caseworkers, as and when needed

The type of person we are looking for is:

We welcome applications from those completing studies in Psychology, Counselling/Psychotherapy, or any Allied Health Profession with a focus on supporting those with mental health needs.  However, your attitude, motivation, and commitment are just as important as your training/qualifications, or any previous experience. We will review all applications individually and assess them on their unique merits, so do not be discouraged from applying if you do not meet all the criteria listed below. We encourage applications from those with lived experience of mental health problems, as well as those from Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities.

Essential:

• An interest in supporting those with mental health needs to access PSFP
• An appreciation of the complex factors that can precipitate, maintain, and exacerbate mental health problems
• Good oral and written communication skills (including listening skills); the ability to communicate in a patient, considered, and empathetic manner
• Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to follow administrative procedures
• A team player who is willing to chip in and work reflexively, responding to the challenges that arise from working in a dynamic environment
• IT skills – able to update spreadsheets, use web-based applications, video-conferencing software, and Microsoft Office applications.

Desirable:

• Customer Service experience, including with friends and family
• Experience of supporting people with mental health needs, in a voluntary, paid, or personal capacity, (i.e., friends and family)
• Previous involvement with local community groups/networks
• Awareness of the cultural barriers that may exist to seeking mental health support

Time commitment and expenses:

• 6 hours per week, during our core hours of 10am - 4pm.

• We request a minimum commitment of 3 months of volunteering after the completion of your induction
• We will provide volunteers with an induction, training, and ongoing mentoring to support them in the role

Overview

Charity Purpose

• Raise funds for research into the cause, prevention and management of dementia.
• Allocate funding to university research project meeting the highest academics standards.
• Raising awareness of dementia.

Objective

• Holds the Executive team and the Board to account to:
  - remain focussed solely on the BRACE stated purpose
  - remain compliant with all English and Welsh laws and the regulations of the Charity Commission.
• Support the Chief Executive in ensuring both the Board members and Executive team work closely together to achieve the agreed strategic objectives.
• Act (in partnership with the Chief Executive) as an ambassador and the public face of BRACE.

Charity Structure

• BRACE the charity has a sole Trustee “BRACE Trustee Limited”. All members of the Board are Directors of BRACE Trustee Limited and act as Trustees of BRACE. There are up to 15 directors of BRACE Trustee Limited who for reasons of clarity are called Trustees.
• The Chair and Trustees are usually appointed for a fixed term of 4 years which can be renewed once, enabling Trustees to serve for a maximum continuous term of 8 years.

Meetings

• Board meetings are held 4 times a year plus 1 awayday. Each meeting is +/- 4 hours.
• There are currently 3 sub-committees of the Board (Scientific Advisory Committee [SAC], Finance and HR). The 3 sub-committees meet no more than one month before the board meetings either in person or on Zoom. SAC reviews applications for grants and makes recommendations to the Board for approval.
• Board Meetings are generally held in person in the Bristol area, online or hybrid meetings are not encouraged but can be facilitated.

Together we will defeat dementia.

A bit about this role

Unfortunately our feline friends can occasionally stray or get lost, which can be extremely distressing for their owners. Our lost and found volunteers are passionate about reuniting lost cats and bringing families back together. They help cats and their owners by advertising lost cats and providing support, advice and guidance to people searching for their cats. 

What can you expect to be doing?

• Responding to enquiries from the public about lost and found cats
• Keeping up to date records of lost and founds cats
• Matching cats that are reported lost with those reported found
• Advertising lost and found cats
• Providing help and information to owners about their lost cats

Cecil Gardens is a large service containing ninety-nine apartments, close to the city centre of Hull and easily accessible by public transport. The service supports adults with a wide variety of needs including Over 18s, Mental Health needs, Older People, Learning Disabilities and Autism. Our service users live in self-contained apartments and have access to several communal spaces, including a restaurant, a hairdressers and a spa.

We are looking for several volunteers to assist with our activities. We have a large service close to the city centre in Hull. Our housing provider organises a wide range of group activities presently which you could assist with. This role would include helping to set up the room, moving tables and chairs if necessary, making sure that all of the materials and equipment are ready for the session to begin. Assist with the activity when needed, providing clear instructions. Tidy away the materials and equipment at the end of the session, ensuring that the room has been returned to its original setting.

We are also looking for volunteers to set up and run new activity sessions in the evenings and weekends, when there are currently no provisions. The activities can be anything from art and crafts, board games, cooking groups, bingo, walking groups, Digital skills, film groups, and many more. Your role will include promoting the group to our service users, planning and preparing for the activity making sure the materials and equipment are ready, providing clear instructions and assisting with the activity when needed, and tidying away at the end of the session.

As a volunteer with Creative Support we offer training for your role, access to a volunteer supervisor, an induction, a monthly volunteer newsletter, and an online volunteer support network group on Zoom.

Creative Support are looking for a Gardening Volunteer to develop and run sessions for service users with learning disabilities and complex needs in Leicester. Our service users are really keen to make use of our fantastic garden space. We have a very large back garden with several planters for growing.

We are looking for people who have a good knowledge of gardening, in particular growing and looking after plants and would like to pass on that knowledge.

The gardening sessions will run weekly and will also involve our service user families. The volunteer role will also involve an element of fundraising for our gardening project and we would welcome your ideas and support with this.

If you love gardening and have experience of allotments, or planting and growing vegetables in your back garden then this is the volunteering opportunity for you!

We support our volunteers with an Induction, training for the role, a named volunteer supervisor, a monthly newsletter and a monthly online peer support group.

Suggested Time Commitment: 3 hours per week on a Thursday

Our aim is simple – to deliver a vision where fewer people get cancer and those that do receive equal access to excellent treatment. However, we can’t do this without your help. Our shops in local communities are crucial to us raising vital funds. So, we’d like you to volunteer your time and commitment to help us make a difference. We need you to help value our interesting donations in our shops to help turn them into cash.

What will I be doing?

Researching interesting items online on sites such as eBay, Amazon and Abe Books to value them for sale in the shop

Enlisting help from local auction houses when needed

Working together with the shop team to identify and price high value items

Speaking with customers, making them welcome and answering queries

Promoting awareness of the charity and the services that we provide.

What skills do I need?

It’d be great if you have some knowledge of or interest in vintage items, know what to look out for with brands, pottery marks, book publishing dates etc.

A really keen eye for detail and ability to cross reference items across a number of websites to provide the most realistic valuation

Ability to work on your own initiative and as part of a team

Ability to communicate effectively with other members of the team and customers.

Ability to use computer for research

Whist this role will be mainly sitting at a computer desk, you may need to handle bags and donations from the public and there may be stairs to climb depending on which shop you are based in. If you have any concerns about this, please speak with the Shop Manager when expressing your interest in volunteering.  

How much time do I need to commit?

We’d need you to give around three hours per week if you can with the possibility to do more if you’d like to. However, we appreciate any time you’d like to give; please let us know this on your application form.

What support will I be given?

Before starting with Tenovus Cancer Care, we ask that you do try a small number of hours in the shop so we can both see how the role may suit you. The amount of hours can be decided between you and the Shop Manager.

Following that the Shop Manager and team will be on hand to run you through the basics of helping in a shop in your first few days and they’ll always be on hand after that.

Becoming a volunteer with Tenovus Cancer Care can be a rewarding experience and is certainly invaluable to the charity and its goals.

Sorting through our book donations and pricing them ready for sale

Researching interesting books online on sites such as eBay, Amazon and Abe Books to value them for sale in the shop

Displaying the books on the shop floor ensuring books are rotated regularly to increase sales

Enlisting help from local auction houses when needed

Speaking with customers, making them welcome and answering queries

Promoting awareness of the charity and the services that we provide.

Role Description

Come join our team working to help change the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in society. Ranked 2023 Q4 by Best Companies as the 8th best charity to work for in the UK, Medaille Trust is one of the UK’s leading charities in the fight against modern slavery. Our innovative model is based on three principles: Prevent, Protect and Pursue.  We are one of the UK’s largest providers of survivor services, with ten safehouses and six outreach hubs, staffed round the clock by specialist staff, working with more than 600 men, women and dependent children each year.  We work to raise awareness in the UK and to provide preventive work in source countries. Our Pursue work helps survivors to engage with police and within the legal system to seek justice and to secure convictions against their perpetrators.

Our volunteers come from all walks of life and have a wide range of experience and motivations. Whatever your reason for deciding to volunteer, we want to make sure you enjoy your time with us and know just how much we value your support.

Many of our service users don’t use English as their first language and rely on high quality translation to understand information. Therefore, we are looking for volunteers who can accurately translate English text into any of the languages below:

Bengali, Arabic, Amharic, Albanian, Vietnamese, Romanian, Polish, Tigrinya, Punjabi, Urdu and Hindi.

Volunteers need to:

•Be at least 18 years old

•Hold a translating or interpreting qualification or to hold a degree (in any subject) and be fluent in speaking and writing in English, and one or more of the languages above

•Have excellent command of English and other language(s)

•Have grammatical accuracy

•Have excellent proof-reading skills including IT skills

•Have use of own computer

•Be willing to have a basic DBS check

•Have the willingness to learn about human trafficking issues

•Have the ability to maintain confidentiality
