What you’ll be doing • Sighted guiding / giving practical help to individuals in and around venues, so they can take part in events. • Supporting volunteers with sight loss with their volunteering activities which range from facilitating a regular community group to delivering a talk about sight loss to a local business. Your role would involve things like guiding; Meeting and greeting at group activities or creating a welcoming and interesting display stand at events. In this role you will only be helping individuals in places open to the public, often in a group setting. We will provide training in sighted guiding techniques and understanding sight loss. We are a small, inclusive, self-help and independently funded Centre supporting people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). We offer drug free therapies such as Oxygen, Acupuncture, Massage, Shiatsu and group exercise classes including Keep Fit, Pilates and Yoga. The Centre provides support groups and an excellent space for socialising which helps to prevent feelings of isolation. Our aims are to maintain flexibility, mobility and provide pain relief promoting well-being and a positive attitude for those with MS.

Job description

Introduction to the role: 

The Chair of Trustees will provide leadership and direction to the Board of Trustees and centre staff ensuring that the governance and strategic direction of the charity is being fulfilled. The Chair will support and sometimes challenge the team and ensure the Board functions as a unit and works closely with the wider team to achieve our aim to continue to be an exceptionally well run and sustainable organisation so that we can make the greatest practical impact for people managing their lives with MS.

Key Responsibilities: 

1. Leadership and Governance 

• Provide leadership to the charity and team ensuring the charity has the maximum impact for members and users and follows the vision/missions stated in the Strategic Plan. 

• Ensure the Board and Staff fulfil their obligations, duties and responsibilities for the effective governance of the charity. 

• Ensue the Board operates within the charities objectives as stipulated within the Articles of Association. 

• Lead the Board and ensure it operates as a team, engaging all Trustees and fostering a culture of open discussion and debate. 

• Ensure the operation of the centre is realised and systems are in place to manage and mitigate risks 

• Chair bi-monthly Board Meetings and other meetings such as Finance and Health and Safety where appropriate. 

• Act as the support mechanism and critical friend for the Centre Manager and team for operational and strategic queries. 

• Work with Trustees and the Centre Manager to recruit and appoint new Trustees and staff and ensure they receive induction, training and support. 

• Undertake an annual appraisal for the Centre Manager. 

• Perform annual remuneration reviews in consultation with the Board. 

1. External Duties 

• Act as an ambassador for and represent the charity at external meetings, events and functions. 

• Build strong relationships with other MS charities, local charitable organisations, funding partners and key stakeholders. 

1. Strategy and Planning 

• Lead the Trustees in developing, agreeing and implementing the Strategic Plan. 

• Ensue the plan is robust and regularly reviewed and/or amended. 

• Work with the Centre Manager to agree priorities aligned with the Strategic Plan. 

• Support the team in the absence of the Centre Manager and offer advice and guidance where applicable. 

1. Person Specification 

• Essential: 

• Experience of working at a leadership level within a charity or organisation. 

• Experience of charity governance and working as a Trustee. 

• Commitment to the charity, its missions and values and drive and energy to implement positive change. 

• Strong leadership, motivational, interpersonal and conflict resolution skills. 

• Great communicator and able to effectively write reports and chair meetings. 

• Understanding of legal requirements for the charity and liabilities of being a Trustee. 

• Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team.

1. Additional Information: 

• The position requires between 10 - 15 hours per calendar month with regular duties including chairing board and sub-committee meetings, ad hoc visits to the Centre, supporting the Centre Manager and training. 

• Board meetings are preferably in person but can be via zoom if required. 

• The position is voluntary and as such not remunerated however reasonable expenses incurred in the course of duties will be reimbursed. 

Now-u is a non-profit website and app, launched in July 2020 with a mission to inform, involve and inspire people to help tackle some of the world's most pressing environmental and social problems related to i) human rights and welfare, ii) protecting the world around us, and iii) preserving our species and the planet. 

Through promotion we also engage with users of our app and website. By giving people actionable opportunities to help further the cause of our chosen campaigns (i.e. donating to certain charities, writing to your local MP, links to sign petitions), we work to create an engaging space whereby anyone can help contribute and tackle some of the challenges we face today. 

The role

We are looking for a Researcher to join our Campaigns team. The role will involve researching a range of important social, economic, and environmental issues, and then writing up your findings in a way that’s informative yet engaging. Supporting both the Head of Campaigns and Campaign Manager, our Researchers are essential to the creation of all content within the now-u app. 

What you will be doing

Our Campaigns span every issue imaginable – from LGBTQ+ rights to anti-racism, from saving our oceans to promoting sustainable transport, and from helping those in poverty to protecting refugees. As one of our Researchers, you will be charged with not only providing information on these global issues, but also connecting our users with charities across the UK so that they might help make a difference. This could entail finding volunteering opportunities, reliable donation points, or petitions that need signing – the possibilities are endless.

Once the research is done, you will need to curate your findings into what we call a ‘Campaign’ and produce copywriting that sets out the Campaign’s purpose in a way that will affect our users and inspire them to get involved – and then to return to the app again and again!

We also have a news section within the app, sharing articles on the most important issues. We are looking, therefore, for someone that keeps an eye on the various media platforms, knows what’s happening, and is able to be reactive to the latest stories for publishing.

Other responsibilities may include working with our partnerships and social media teams to ensure that our partner charities are being effectively supported and that key Campaigns are being shared across our channels.

What you will need

To be successful in the role as a Researcher, you will ideally have experience working in content – either as a writer or researcher – or working for a non-profit organisation. As a team made up entirely of volunteers, we are self-motivated and proactive about getting our work done with a shared passion for the app’s potential to have a real impact. You are creative with a flair for language, but simultaneously analytical and strategic about your approach to a task.

Our working hours are flexible, usually 3-5 hours a week, and the Campaigns team likes to get together once a fortnight to discuss what we’re working on and any upcoming priorities. 

Volunteering with now-u is an opportunity to provide really important support to a new project that we hope could really make a positive difference in the world. You would also become part of a small friendly volunteer team who would love to work collaboratively.

EVENTS VOLUNTEER (Guildford & Epsom Branch)

We are the RSPCA and it's our vision to live in a world where all animals are respected and treated with compassion. Our volunteers are incredible and play an absolutely essential role in helping us carry out our important animal welfare work every day. Much of the RSPCA’s direct animal welfare work is carried out through the branches. These separately registered charities across England and Wales are run by volunteers who are unstinting in their work for animal welfare.

We are looking for friendly volunteers to help fundraise at fetes, in supermarkets and other outlets to collect vital donations that enable us to continue our animal welfare work. The more volunteers we have and funds we can raise, the more animals we can help!

Overview of the opportunity

In this role, you will be the friendly face of the RSPCA, helping us raise funds for our branch at community fetes and in local high streets, supermarkets and similar outlets.

This varied role offers you the chance to experience different volunteering positions, ranging from street collections and in-store fundraising drives to attendance at local community fetes. Each of these events are equally important to raising vital funds as well as raising our profile in the community.

Volunteering at events offers you the opportunity to meet other volunteers and learn about how you each support the RSPCA. You will most likely meet animals that we have rehomed and hear about their adoption journey.

If you have a relaxed dog that likes meeting people, you are welcome to bring them along with you to street collections and fundraising drives as this is always a conversation starter!

A bit about this role

At Cats Protection we passionately believe that neutering cats before they can breed is an essential part of cat ownership and without neutering the UK’s cat population would quickly get out of control. Our neutering team lead volunteers help spread positive neutering messages and make it easier for owners on low incomes to get their cats neutered. They help raise awareness of the benefits of neutering, promote our neutering schemes and lead and support a team of neutering volunteers.

What can you expect to be doing?

• Our neutering team lead volunteers support their team of volunteers in all aspects of their roles, making sure our volunteers are happy, confident and supported
• Promoting and sharing the benefits of Cats Protection’s neutering schemes

North Hertfordshire Cats Protection formed in the year 2000. We cover a wide area for cat welfare (postcodes SG1 to SG7 and some areas of SG8) and we aim to help as many felines as we possibly can.
We have a small team of fosterers, some with outdoor cat pens, others fostering indoors in a spare room or whole house foster if they have no other pets.
While they are with us, our cats and kittens are health-checked, vaccinated, microchipped and neutered (if they haven't been already). 
We are looking for more fosterers, as well as volunteers to help in all sorts of areas.

The Thalidomide Trust is a unique organisation supporting 430 beneficiaries, now all in their 60s, born with disabilities as a result of their mother taking the drug, thalidomide, during pregnancy. Their physical disabilities include limb damage, hearing and visual impairment, brain and sensory impairment and damage to internal organs. They are a remarkable group of people, who have achieved a great deal despite often living with extreme levels of disability.

Our beneficiaries have very complex and varied needs which are increasing as they age.  The Trustees provide effective governance and oversight to ensure the Trust understands these needs and has adequate and well-managed resources to meet them.  

We are looking for an experienced finance professional with an understanding of charity accounting procedures and governance to join our Board of Trustees*. You will help ensure we provide the best possible future for our beneficiaries in the next phase of their lives.

We are a Charity with secure funding in place for the lifetime of our beneficiaries. A recent Independent Governance review reflected the high level of skills and experience of our Board and excellent standards of governance.

You will bring the following skills and experience to the role:

· Professional accountancy qualification and strong technical accounting skills.

· Understanding of the principles of investment management.

· Experience of working in a senior financial position

· Good current knowledge of charity accounting processes and reporting requirements.

· Sound current knowledge of Charity Law and Charity Governance frameworks.

· Well-developed interpersonal skills and an ability to develop positive relationships with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds.

Experience of monitoring investment performance is desirable but not essential. However, you should be willing to learn new skills and be able to devote approximately 15 to 20 days per annum to the Trust – within this time specifically be available to attend three full day Board meetings, at least four half-day Finance Committee meetings and one beneficiary event each year.

This is a voluntary role, but reasonable expenses incurred will be reimbursed.

About the roles

Following Sainsbury Centre's relaunch last year, they have laid the groundwork for their new five-year plan, which will help them pursue growth and innovation. They aim to find three Board Members who complement each other and support the organisation in achieving its strategic objectives.

Who we are looking for

Although the roles are set out in distinct areas, it is important to emphasise that they are flexible. Therefore, a set of blended skills/overlap and a combination of experiences and strengths is very much welcomed.

• Creative capital

We are looking for someone with a strong background in advertising and innovation. Your experience in these fields will be instrumental in crafting compelling campaigns that elevate the Sainsbury Centre’s visibility and engage diverse audiences.

• Media brand

Your deep understanding of how a 21st-century media organisation operates will keep the Sainsbury Centre at the forefront of industry trends and technologies. You will successfully pitch content ideas to production companies and broadcasters, such as pitching podcasts to Radio 4 with themes like “Greatest Museum in the World” and discussions on which objects are crucial for future preservation.

Leveraging platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and other social media channels, you will engage and expand our audience, fostering a strong, interactive community.

We are looking for a strategic thinker with a proven track record in media, communications, and content creation, who has experience developing and executing long-term media strategies.

Our vision is to create a fluid and dynamic cultural landscape free from the constraints of traditional paywalls. Visitors can explore our diverse range of exhibitions designed to be engaging and interactive. We are also committed to enhancing our digital interaction capabilities and are working diligently to create a seamless blend of physical and digital experiences within our space.

As a Board Member, you will drive these initiatives forward. We need someone with strong financial acumen who can connect us with funding opportunities and leverage existing resources to open new doors. Your role will involve engaging with potential donors and sponsors, using your network to secure invitations to exclusive events and building relationships that can lead to financial support for our projects.

Join the Oxfam community

As a Social Media Volunteer you will help our friendly shop team by connecting with your community to attract new supporters to the shop. Best of all you’ll be raising vital funds to support people facing poverty around the world.

About this role

This is an exciting opportunity to support shops with managing different social media channels. With an aim to maximise engagement, promote volunteering and raise awareness of Oxfam’s campaigns.

We will give you all the training and support you need so you will develop your skills as part of our team. You don’t need to have any experience – we’ve got you covered. You can also get some lunch and travel costs too. Whatever you need, we’re here to help.

This role usually requires 2 – 4 hours per week so it would be fantastic if you would consider getting involved in other areas of the shop.
