Balkerne Gardens Trust offers a complete pathway of support and care, from our Care at Home service, affordable sheltered housing through to residential and nursing care to older people in the local community.
Our aim is to provide unrivalled individualised support and care, tailored to suit the needs of every person, delivered by a team of dedicated and well-trained nursing, care and support staff in modern, comfortable facilities.
Trustee Role: Purpose
This is a voluntary role.
Trustees play a unique role in the delivery of the Trust’s core objectives and are collectively responsible for the governance of the organisation and for all Board decisions.
The Board sets the strategic direction for the organisation, ensuring alignment to the Trust values, and is responsible for setting organisational policy, defining targets, agreeing the financial plan, evaluating performance, and ensuring that strong relationships are maintained between the Trustees and the Senior Leadership Team.
Key Accountabilities:
· Act in the Trusts best interests, ensuring it complies with its governance responsibilities and any other relevant legislation and regulations.
· Ensure effective management of resources and risk.
· Provide support and constructive challenge to the Chief Executive and Senior Leadership Team to ensure the delivery of Trust objectives.
· Bring professional expertise and personal experience to the Board.
Time Commitment:
· The Board generally holds meetings on the last Monday of every month, 10 times a year. These normally take place in the early evening and last approximately 1 – 1.5 hours. Most meetings happen face to face at our central location in the city of Colchester.
· Trustees also support the Trust events as part of their ambassadorial role as well as making make some visits to its services.
· A minimum of a 3 year term commitment would be expected from Trustees.

As Treasurer you will occupy a key role in shaping what the charity does and how it does it. You will work closely with the Chair, CEO, Finance Director and other trustees in overseeing our financial governance and compliance with our legal, regulatory obligations.
In your role you would monitor the financial standing of the charity and take the lead in ensuring the Board meets its duty to ensure proper accounting records are kept, financial resources are controlled, invested and economically spent in line with governance, legal and regulatory requirements. This includes reviewing budgets, forecasts and management accounts, as well as the overarching strategic management of the organisation’s financial resources. You would be expected to constructively challenge the figures presented to enable greater transparency and accountability to improve the allocation of resources and the charity’s image in order to build the charity and its financial resilience.
Typically you will not be asked to dedicate more than a total of 4 hours per month which are largely at your discretion.

5. Marketing Trustee
We are seeking a communication expert to advise the board and the Operational Leadership Team how we can further enhance our engagement and awareness to deliver its aims. Our new Trustee will have strong background in a related field such as, brand development, marketing, advertising or PR.
6. Finance Trustee
We are seeking a finance expert to monitor the financial administration of the charity and report to the board of trustees at regular intervals on its state of financial health, in line with best practice, and in compliance with the governing document and legal requirements to provide the board with the confidence and knowledge to better make strategic decisions.

We will be looking to recruit a Board Lead for our work in Butetown (we are committed to working in Butetown from January 2024 – Summer 2026), alongside the Leads for Welsh, Diversity, Safeguarding and Environment.

It’s crucial to our work to have young people’s ideas and expertise in the organisation. We need the broadest range of perspective on our Board, and we want to be guided by a range of people who can contribute to the continued development of our work across all communities, and that includes young people. We are looking to recruit at least one person aged 18 to 25 to bring their voice to the table, to help us find the best ways forward for the future of opera, for the future of the company and most importantly, for future audiences and artists from all backgrounds.
We also want to support young people in their professional and personal development, and we will work with Young Trustees to ensure this is an opportunity for them to build their knowledge and experience. Young Trustees will receive mentoring from existing Trustees and training will be provided for any areas they feel less confident in.

About the role
Due to our current Treasurer’s term of office reaching an end in December 2024, we are seeking a treasurer to join the Trustee board of a small online health charity that helps millions of people each year.
The charity is at an exciting time, expanding our ways of working and developing new revenue streams. As a Treasurer you will provide support with financial accounting and reporting. In addition, as a trustee you will provide guidance, expertise and support to the team and help ensure that the charity is meeting its aims. About the role

Shannon Trust fulfils an unmet need around adult learning, supporting people who’ve fallen through the cracks in formal education.
We know a lot of people have had negative learning experiences in the past, so our programme is designed to be different, with no exams and no classrooms. Our unique, evidence-based Turning Pages reading manuals and Count Me In numeracy manuals are used by thousands of learners in prisons and the community to improve reading and numeracy skills.
Prison volunteers live near to their local prison so that they can visit about once a month during the working week to nurture the growth of the Shannon Trust in their prison. They help unlock the power of reading by offering advice, guidance, training and support to prison staff and prisoner mentors who help other prisoners to improve their skills 1 to 1.
We are looking for volunteers who are able to give a regular, reliable commitment for ideally two years and able to deliver engaging training to groups of people in prisons. Volunteers do not need to be teachers or qualified traininers, full training will be given. Due to the nature of the role, prison security vetting will be required.
We provide training for the role via e-learning and 4 training sessions which are a mix of live, online and group training.

As a Volunteer Food Hub Assistant, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of our Food Hub. This position involves a range of tasks from organising food donations to assisting with distribution. We need someone who can easily commute to Hackney and is available to help on a regular basis. Your key responsibilities will include:
- Receive, sort, and organise food donations.
- Ensure food items are stored correctly and safely.
- Assist in preparing food parcels for distribution.
- Help with the distribution of food to families and individuals in need.
- Maintain accurate records of food inventory.
- Monitor stock levels and report any shortages to the team leader.
- Greet and assist beneficiaries of the Food Hub with respect and compassion.
- Address any questions or concerns from beneficiaries.
- Follow all health and safety guidelines to ensure a clean and safe environment.
- Regularly clean and sanitise work areas.

Join our amazing volunteer team to raise awareness of sight loss and RNIB services at local events. You’ll be making a real difference to people living with sight loss by helping to create a world without barriers. This face to face opportunity will see you providing information about RNIB services and activities to help people with sight loss live the lives they want, enabling them to hear about the support that is available, and how they can help others. What you’ll be doing • Creating a welcoming and interesting display stand. • Speaking directly to people affected by sight loss. • Being a friendly face of RNIB locally - engaging with a diverse range of people. • Providing information and demonstrations of basic independent living aids for the general public and professionals.
